This is my 3rd participation to Ludum Dare!

Another great event has come to an end. With this I present you SoccerTurn. This is a turn based soccer game that is best played with a friend alongside on the same computer.

Controls

  • Use 1 to move
  • Use 2 to kick the ball (If you have it)
  • Use 3 to tell your player to do nothing for this turn

Upon Clicking on either 1 or 2, point and click with your mouse in the direction you want to do either actions! You may also hit Escape if you changed your mind and would like to do another action instead.

At any time, you may press - m to mute the music - r to restart the current match (since last goal basically) - h to hard reset and go back to the title page - shift + escape to close the game

Mechanics

One player controls the blue team, the other player controls the red team.

The game will switch back and forth between the blue and red teams.

By order, a character will be selected by the game in order to be given an action.

Actions are selected via your number keys (not number pad).

Once an action is selected, point and click with your mouse where you want to use said action.

The game will take care of the rest!

I hope you enjoy this small multiplayer game, the idea is simple, but given more time, there are many places where I can expand and improve.

Advanced Mechanics

  • Your character can steal the enemy's ball by walking into him or across him. It has a small percentage chance of occurring (like 15% I think). You also have a small chance to loose your ball by walking into opponents. These are rare but completely disruptive in a game! :D

  • Also, your movement is heavily influenced whether you carry the ball or not. Furthermore, when you move with the ball in your possession, there is a very slim chance that you may move much further then being without a ball.

  • Finally, when not having the ball, there is a chance that your available distance for you to move is halved!

These 3 advanced mechanics adds a lot of randomness to the game which makes it more tactical and unpredictable! (I'm also writing these down here so that you don't need to ask me if it's a bug or not :p )

About Local Multiplayer

This one thing bothers me, because I know for a fact that a lot of people might not have the time to bring a friend along and play it. I have spent a lot of time on the mechanics which made me discard the idea of having a basic AI.

After completing the game, I can confirm there is a lot of networking and mild competitive potential in this game. Basically, this game has room for a lot more!

Further disclaimer

This game was my first one being so mechanic intensive. So it may still contain a few bugs that I missed besides the minor ones. Minor ones are things such as messy character order selection at start of game for example.

Do please tell me if you find and major bug so I can quickly patch it up! Thank you!

Cool little 2 player game, the mechanics worked well. Maybe some work on the audio and graphics would have been nice, but overall a pretty good entry. I also submitted a football/soccer game if you'd like to try it: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/1on1-world-cup-2018

Nice work! I appreciate the effort you put into both the presentation and the documentation for the game.

I like the graphics a lot - though there's no animation, the camera motion and the colorfulness of the sprites and soccer field make it feel plenty alive. At first I wasn't sure if there was a lot of strategy to it with it just involving moving and occasionally kicking, but I got in a pretty heated battle with my friend which ended in him scoring an own goal (I had kicked it just short of the goal). I think getting a grasp of how to cover players and how it's easier to cover distance with passes helped a lot.

I think the strategy could be enhanced if you could see a possible range of motion for the player/ball when you are about to take an action, so you have an idea of what they are capable of - sometimes I'd move 2 feet and be so disappointed! Also, it is frustrating when it'd be my turn and it'd select the keeper - if there was some way to either choose a player or rotate evenly, that might be cool.

One playability improvement I'd suggest is to have moving be the default, so we didn't have to keep reaching for 1 on the keyboard before clicking - then you could still hit 2 or 3 if you wanted to do something else.

Overall I thought the polish was great!

This is pretty cool! I just played it with @sayumeki. It's a little bit hard to get the ball around efficiently, but maybe I'm just bad at positioning players well for soccer. It also was a little frustrating that sometimes the player would move only a little bit, and other times they would move much further - you won't know how much you get for your move. The UI was also pretty clear - the camera centers on the player, and the player has an outline highlight, which is good.

I really like the Ludum Dare 41 logo you put in the backwall of the stage! Very nice touch!

Thanks for playing!
Im glad you guys had a chance to play it together, I did not have much of the opportunity to test it with someone when I was writing this game.

I agree about the range of motion, my biggest concern for this game was to make sure the game mechanics/controls were clear. I see that I forgot about showing a range of motion for the players. Initially they used to all move the same distance, but then I realized to add a randomness to the movements which can make some pretty funny games. Good remark!

Also, I agree about the repeat previous action feature. That is really smart and should of not taken to long to implement, I did not think of that! Thanks for the tip!

I'm glad you liked the Ludum Dare logo! I tried to replicate it to the best I could within a game jam marathon. I'm glad it turned out well

I live alone but I still played this game against myself! :)
### What I loved
- well polished and smooth gameplay and graphics
- Seems like it would be a fun game with two people

### :thought_balloon: My Thoughts
- The camera bouncing around all over the place made me a little nauseous
- The game would play faster and be more fun if there were less players on the field to cycle though or better, on alternating turns players can control any one member of their team

This is a really cool idea - there's a lot of potential here for a second version of this game, I encourage you to keep going with this!

Good idea! Maybe augmenting the probability to steal the ballon when bumping into the one who have it will make the game more dynamic.
