Quatris - LD42 - Running out of Space by KiotiKid

[raw]
made by KiotiKid for LD 42 (COMPO)

Think of it like Tetris but instead of rotating the pieces, you can also rotate the screen! Blocks appear from the middle of the screen and it's your job to keep that middle clear and stack the pieces to the best of your abilities to create full lines.

Its my first LD submission. I had an absolute blast and while it might not be the best out there, I really enjoyed making it.

I feel like I'm not smart enough for this game. I like that you put a spin (heh) on a classic puzzle game. If you feel like spending some post-LD time on it, I think some animations and maybe a brief tutorial would go a long way to making it feel less intimidating.

@reboundgames I would agree! I was hoping to have a menu screen and a little tutorial screen for the jam but just ran into some bugs that I had a hell of a time fixing. Animations were an after thought for me, but I would also agree. We'll see if I dig it back out. The nice thing is, I teach intro programming. So now I can at least show the kids an example of something I did on my own in 48 hours and maybe encourage them as well!

Cool game! The grid feels a bit big to fill up, but it's still fun to play.

Original and well executed. I personally found it too difficult though, because the lack of hints of where the piece will fall in the other grids.

I think that some shadow pieces in all the four grids indicating where the piece would fall if you rotate the grid would be very useful (similar to Tetris DS). Some animations on rotations probably would help too.

Good job nonetheless!

@teo-miklethun Thank for the feedback. I struggled with the grid size a little. I wanted it big enough to give space but small enough to be difficult. I didn't try too many combos since I was too busy squashing bugs but might give it more tweaking later down the road.

@korso Thanks for the feedback. I didn't have much time for animations. A shadow would be an interesting idea and I never thought of that! Animations were something I didn't plan to put in for the compo. I didn't have the time to determine a good way to handle it. My thought was a simple picture to just give the illusion of movement but ran out of time.

Bit hard to get into, and the playfeild is big. I really liked the concept, very creative.

@omnipotentindie Thanks for the feedback. I just went with the idea without even knowing if it would play well! I would agree its hard to actually play and the field may be a bit big.

Tetris is THE game that matches this theme perfectly, and it's a clever idea to let the player turns the "board"

@noxalus thanks for the kind words. I spent a little time trying to figure out different ideas but the Tetris theme seemed to be the best. It's the original running out of space!

I liked the room rotating, I've not seen it in a tetris clone before. My gripes were that I found it quite easy, the pieces didn't seem to speed up. Controls were solid, not at all frustrating which can happen a lot in these games.

@tetra Thanks for the kind words! I had not seen the idea of rotating the room either and thought "why not give it a go". I did program in speeding up. It happens after every 5 lines and reaches max speed at 50. It just doesn't seem very fast at the start. I also think the grid was a little large. I had originally thought of adding a menu with a difficulty selection to have it faster at the start but unfortunately, time just ran out and I was running into a major bug I couldn't solve.

If you never rotate the grid it becomes a regular tetris :p
It should have been great if a game mechanic forces you to spin.
Nice game tho.

i am sure there are some people who would like this - but my brain is just not equipped to do it - big points on innovation and theme usage

Your game is very nice to play. The general impact is positive.
As a professional game dev I would suggest... just kidding haha
Nonetheless, if you want to work on this project more I suggest making a difficulty incresing algorithm.
Graphics - very nice. Controls are also working very well.
Maybe you could also take a glimpse at my game? I already enlarged it into a wholesome Android game :)

Cool implementation. A pretty novel idea, really like the creativity on that. I didn't find any mechanics that caused me to want to spin, which meant that despite the cool twist the game felt more like regular tetris on a wuper wide platform.

@kiotikid This game was really fun. As a huge Tetris fan, of course I like it. The concept is interesting, though in a way it just kind of seems like you're playing 4 Tetris games at once. I suppose the 4 sides do start to interact as it gets more crowded though. Nice entry, I played it for awhile!

I always struggle with tetris, but I like the slight twist you added!

@bog13 @paulhocker @eric-kulbiej @candlesan @autumnotopia Thanks for all the kind words. I hadn't stopped in in a few weeks due to school starting back up. I'm glad everyone enjoyed and I'll try and get to your games as well!
