Story Collabs by Maakep

[raw]
made by Maakep for LD 41 (COMPO)

In this, uh, community driven textbased MMO adventure game you'll work together with other creative jammers to create a literary story.

The objective is simple; make great contributions that will be appreciated by fellow players. The things you write will be credited to the username you pick.

The rules - You can only write one addition in a row, - You cannot write a message 4 seconds after someone else has written something (to prevent accidentally sending at the same time) - Getting upvotes gains you points, - Getting downvotes loses you points, - Getting too many downvotes will remove your addition

How to play - Hover a text to see the author & points - Click a text to mark it, giving you options for potentially silly text to speech, upvoting & downvoting - See how many authors are online right now in the top right corner. - If someone writes a message or votes on a submission you'll hear a notification sound and be updated in realtime. - If you try to violate the rules, you'll hear an error message and see an error message. - Remember, any contribution is welcome - no matter how small or big!

To the game!

Features that may arrive post-jam, in prioritized order: - [x] Polishing a few features (button for text to speech after selecting for example) - [x] Up- & down-voting sentences (the +- are already there, but without functionality) - [ ] Leaderborads (based on votes) - [ ] Archiving stories & viewing history - [ ] Notification in browser tab

Technology stack - React - Typescript - Node - Socket.io

Indeed, I closed down the server temporarily as I didn't expect any visitors unless I created blog posts/commented on others about it. I'll put it up when I get home from work in a couple of hours! Thanks for trying to play, though!

I really enjoy "exquisite corpse" story-writing sessions. You never know what you're going to end up with once it's over. The concept of Internet crowd-sourcing the story is a novel one, and to see things added in real-time is a treat.

Is there any way for you to ensure that only one person can be "in line" to update the story next? Can you have multiple stories available for participants to add to at the same time? Is there any way to finish a story, and will the stories be able to be read after they're done?

Booted it up, took a moment to catch up with the story, then proceeded to close my laptop and walk away. I suppose that's the problem with collaborative things on the internet: it's only a matter of time before it's soiled, no pun intended. The idea is a novel one, at least, though... I wouldn't really call it a game? While the program itself doesn't seem to follow the theme, the content that's being generated is CERTAINLY making up for it! Fantasy scat comedy. Good Lord, bless Carlos' soul.

Very interesting. I would like to see where does this project could lead to?

Hmmm... One friend of mine made a typo while submitting at this game. Is there any way he can correct it?

Cool idea! I included it in my Ludum Dare 41 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NizAskJCoRk

@kpded there is no way to edit your submissions - you can, however, downvote yourself which will remove the submission if enough people downvote it. It was a small typo though, not worth downvoting imo! Thank you for your submission, defining our character's struggles!

Thanks @Jupiter_Hadley, and thank you for creating the character for the story! Go Jewels, the deadly rapper!

Cool concept! The web game has a nice, intuitive UI. You made it really easy to read the story as well as contribute.

It would be cool if there was multiple stories going on at once, each with a different theme. That way you can contribute to the story that's most interesting to you.

Overall, the UI is well done. I think the leaderboards would go a long way in making this feel like more of a game/challenge.

Great work :)

This is very interesting. It's basically Twitch does storywriting. I enjoyed the text to speech choice as well!

Collaborate to create story.

it will generate Funny story.(it can generate so many ideas for incompatible game genres)

This is good thought process to improve creativity.

I had fun with the game! It's great that you implemented the audio to hear the story, because it gets funnier! Cool idea :D

I'll always appreciate someone making a creative tool for ludum dare, and I think you've done a good job here. I am a little curious as to what happens when a section is deleted though. Does the next player have to fit something in the gap? The option to suggest alternative sections could make a good twist, but might make the writing process more competitive too, so it's a complicated question to consider

A very interesting idea with some very interesting results! You can always trust random people on the internet to come up with some random plots.

Hey this is a really cool idea! I could totally see it working for groups of friends (maybe as a Facebook Messenger groupchat game), it's really fun to be able to completely change the direction of the story. Great job :D

I like it! Are there multiple stories going on at once, or does every single person see the same one?

Thanks a lot for the feedback everyone.

@cristiano.m.garcia will do!

@veztron Yeah, I was thinking about putting it into "rooms", so that you could create your own Story Collabs and then share a room code, it might come in the future if I spend more time on this, it's definitely something I'd like to expand my knowledge on. Great feedback, thanks.

@RockhopperGames Yeah, I had some feedback that suggested only being able to downvote/remove the latest, but that kind of enforcement went against my initial philosophy; that this community is smart enough to collaborate on a professional level; that we should be able to create amazing things even without hard restrictions.

@ZaneDD For now, only one active room!

First feature I'll implement is probably a "finishing the story"-feature to archive it and also being able to read archived stories. Then creating private "rooms".

Here's the previous story btw:
