Snail Fighter is a pixel-art shoot em' up where you control a snail against hordes of enemy turtles.

The snail's world is really small, so be careful with how much bullets you shoot - you could end up shooting yourself from behind!

The game itself was developed in Unity, the art with Aseprite, and the music with FL Studio and royalty-free soundfonts. It was made under a 15 hour period for the 38th edition of Ludum Dare.

Wow, this is tough. Graphics are pretty polished. I like the fact that your bullets loop around and hit you from behind, but that makes it super hard to not die from them.

Top-notch graphics. Nice job.

If you really want to challenge yourself; try to read what the snails in the background are saying while you play. Honestly, I liked that touch, very funny.

The innovative aspect : really like the bullets coming back around to hit you.
Awesome entry! :snail:

Nice job with the graphics! i like that you can hit yourself but i think that the movement is a bit weird.

@squatch Thank you! I think that in the end the 'goal' of the game ended up being reading the whole dialog between those two, glad you liked it!

Really interesting mechanic to have bullets wrap around the screen. Tough as nails, I kept shooting myself in the back. Trust no one, not even yourself! :snail: :gun:

Pretty fun! The bullet wrap is interesting. It took me a minute to figure out what was going on, but the end result that I am more cautious with my shots. It's also nice to spam an area then get out of there so you can concentrate on the non-bullet ridden area while your residual bullet shower takes some enemies down. I could see some interesting strategies evolving around this mechanic alone. I like the graphics and the gameboy-esque palette. I would have liked some horizontal movement, but it was a good time either way!

Who knew that just making bullets wrap around would make a game so much more difficult? Great job!

I am a dude with a mustache and I approve of this game. Simple, intuitive, deep, and stylish.

I think the game is a lot of fun. I didn't know in the beginning that I could shoot and after that the bullets from behind... hahaha big surprise but it was a good one. I like the graphics and the whole mood of the game, despite its simplicity. As a comment, something I believe would improve the experience a lot would be adding better feedback when killing a turtle or being shot from behind, a lot of particles, moving the screen, something like that. You should consider a mobile version, nice game!

@fiery-squirrel Thank you for your feedback! I completely agree with the visual feedback part, it'd probably add a lot of value (if done right)

Pretty cool game, I like how your bullets come back around. I think you could have made it a bit easier to kill the enemies, but other than that it plays very nicely. I like the little dialogues going on at the bottom of the screen too, nice touch :)

Aesthetic looks cool. It took me awhile understand that it's better avoid the enemies than kill them. The way to tell the story with that dialogues in the background is great. Nice job with so few time working on it.

I like the idea of literally shooting yourself in the back when holding the fire button all the time. That's a nice self-regulating mechanic. I really suck at your game, i'm bad at those directional fly-and-shoot-games in general. I'm too occupied with not dying so i'm unable to follow the dialogue of the other snails, which is sad, as i'd like to have known what they are talking about. The game reminds me of an early game boy game, a vertical shooter. If you want to enhance that retro feel, the controls would have to be less physically accurate, more snappy, like immediate stops when releasing the direction buttons.

Solid entry! I liked the wrapping bullets, and using the other snails to explain things and heckle the player. I only wish it was possible to move left and right as well as up/down. Loved the retro style graphics and audio!

Very nice concept! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :)
