Influenza: The Game by longchamps

[raw]
made by longchamps for LD 38 (COMPO)

Become the influenza virus and survive as long as possible in your human host.

The day before the first day of the compo, I came down with the flu. I didn't think I would be able to participate, but I used my sickness as inspiration and completed my first jam and first finished game period. It's a very simple game, but I learned a lot while making it.

"Not medically accurate" - you will be scoring highly in the "humour" category from me!

Luckily viruses aren't this smart in real life!

The gameplay is a tad too simple for my liking. Adding in different types of white cells would help a lot. One slightly faster, one slowly homing towards the player, one bigger, one smaller, etc.. Small variations like these are easy to make and very effective.

The music got on my nerves pretty quickly, maybe that was specifically composed to spread the headache?

Taking your predicament into account this is alright for what it is. Hopefully your next jam will be less  and more

I have to agree with @huvaakoodia that the gameplay is a little bit to easy for me. However, I am intrigued by the fact that you were able to make this game for the compo while you had a flu  Nice job!

Thanks for playing and for the feedback. I agree that the gameplay is too simple. I would have liked to have different enemy types and powerups and things, but just didn't have the time or energy too complete. I'm happy that I was able to get something out the door though which was my main goal. Luckily along with the flu, I think I caught the gamedev bug, so I'm excited to see what I can do for the next jam.

Fun, simple game. I laughed at "not medically accurate". I look forward to what you do next time when you're not sick!

I didn't get very far, but I think if the game were to speed up, or add some variety, it could be even better.

It's nice to see that you turned your problem into inspiration :)
I liked the responsiveness of the movement and the intro screen is great xD
The music is a little annoying and the game lacked some variety though... but what can I say? I felt these were the same problems of my entry :(

The fact that you used something that would have been an excuse for many people to not participate as the inspiration for your game is just awesome. The fact that it's your first jam and first completed game ever: awesomer. And the gameplay may be simple, but honestly it made it easy to pick up and enjoy it right away. The game doesn't try to be anything it's not, and it feels more "complete" than a lot of other games from the weekend as a result. Keep up the good work!!

I liked it! It was simple and fun, and was very clear on how to play it, and what the objective was. It also got pretty hard... I found myself in situations where there was basically no way out without getting hit. To make it a little more balanced, maybe adding invincibility frames after getting hit would help with not getting instantly killed by getting an unlucky grouping. But besides that, it was very enjoyable. Nice job!

Fun game. Sometimes I get stuck without a way to get out.

I liked it.

Clever idea! Could use some powerups or something though
