This game is a set of 2d platforming challenges that quickly increase in difficulty, with a huge twist...

Your efforts will be recorded as replays, but our server space is precious and we have many test subjects. We can only store the best results - inefficient runs will be terminated immediately. Don't let us down!

Instructions

As you play, the game is dynamically generating a replay for your inputs. The more complex your inputs are, the more bytes they will take up, and the quicker you will run out of space.

Each level has a byte quota that your inputs should fall under to succeed. You will need to collect keys to complete some levels. Note that the byte quota is not optimal on most of the levels - you can easily find solutions that use less space. Use the leaderboards to compare your scores to others.

Each button press AND release costs 2 bytes (time since last press, buttons pressed/released). Each missile fire costs 6 bytes (fire command, position (x,y) as short)

Holding both directions will cause you to slide frictionlessly. This is very useful if you don't want to release a key, which would cost 2 bytes.

FAQ

My browser does not seem to support this game?

This game is written in ES6. Most modern browsers should support it, but if you haven't updated you may run into issues.

Why am I playing as a fox?

The main character is a fox so I can break the cycle of every player sprite being a robot in literally all of my Ludum Dare Entries. This game could have been Low Battery 4.

Where do the missiles come from?

??????????????

Level X seems impossible

The limitations of the game mean you need to think about platformers a bit differently. Jumping at the right time during the player's acceleration, for instance, is useful for getting low times on many of the courses.

A few courses are designed with momentum in mind, which can help you save presses and releases. Instead of moving directionally, try holding both directions to slide around. You can tell when you're doing this if you emit sparkles.

Also, try not releasing keys after pressing them. This is useful if you know you aren't going to jump again in the level - simply hold the key all the way to the finish. (you only jump on the initial press)

Technology

Custom engine as always. HTML5 Canvas and Web Audio API, a greatly improved version of svg collision based on Animelee, and GLMatrix.

Music created in pxtone, all graphics except from particles are SVG.

The controls are awkward in non-qwerty keyboards. The game is already hard when you have to think of which key you are currently holding, which one you can release etc... I stopped at the level "Up and down".
Expect this keyboard issue, this works great. I had fun trying to beat the levels in the least bytes possibles.
The game is very polished.
This game merits to be seen my more people.

@sentmoraap I've added arrow keys as an alternative to WASD to the post compo build. I did think about this being an issue, but I ended up forgetting about it in the end. Glad you enjoyed it!

I really liked this mechanic but it was a bit hard. The controls were neat and the music set the right atmosphere. I had fun but in the beginning everything was a bit unclear to me. Nice implementation of the theme!

It is a little weird to have rocket shooting foxes as test subjects. I enjoyed the controls and timing things correctly to beat the levels. Overall I had fun. I didn't play long enough to determine if rockets would need to be used to defeat actual enemies.

Interesting gameplay - and really well done. I like the main aesthetic and music. It seems to me that you could add more informations so as to help players to understang gameplay. You tried to do something unusual - and it's great, but I thing that this game could be better using a gameplay more conventional - maybe something more or less similar with platformers. However, you did a great entry. You deserve more rates. Bravo ++

This was so hard and frustrating (this is a good thing). But the best and very inovative puzzle game I've played in a while and awesome overall. This is like one of those old games that is very simple but everybody still remembrs it because it was so cool. I'll really feel sad if this goes unrated because I think it's one of the best in the competition. Also music is really nice too. It's cool that you use pxtone. If you want to expand the game (and get some serve space :D ) it would be cool for you to add a level editor. Keep up the good work :)
