READ THESE TIPS BEFORE YOU PLAY

1.Shoot the ground at an angle to go flying in a direction, not just straight up

2.Strafe in midair to controll your turns and avoid falling into the void.

3.Jump repeatedly to preserve momentum from bosting in a direction or strafe jumping

Strafe jumping Guide

  1. Jump while moving forward

  2. While in midair, hit the D key and move your mouse slightly to the right (keep holding forward through all of this)

  3. Hit the ground while holding Space

  4. While in midair, hit the A key and move your mouse slightly to the left

  5. Repeat in succession to gain speed.

Here is a video showing some strafe jumping:

That was aweful... No, not the game. It is nicely implemented, makes lots of fun, the movement feels great and the graphics are well done (okay, the menu may needs some polish). I meant my lack of shooter skills, I didn't survive longer than a minute, no matter how hard I tried. :head_bandage: All I really missed was some kind of health indicator to see how close death is.

It's funny cause now I really wanna play your game but it's for Linux xD

I actually think my game can run on Linux but I don't know for sure (You commented in my game you'd play if it was for linux, remember?). Could you help me with this? Could you try if it works for Linux and tell me? just download the windows version and it will detect that you're on Linux, I think. here's the link :D https://pere-dm.itch.io/batter-e

hope it works, hope you like it! -thanks in advance <3

The Windows port doesn't seem to work for me. I can see the main menu OK, but once I press enter, the game goes to a black screen, flashes red, goes back to a black screen, then crashes a few seconds later. I'm on windows 10.

I hope you can sort it out, the game looks right up my ally. Reminds me of Devil Daggers.

2 things kept me from playing it unfortunately..

- Crashes not long after I start shooting
- Mouse movement is very very slow

Shame because I'm a BIG Devil Daggers fan with a 700+ seconds pb! Also I instantly recognized you since you showed your grappling hook thing on /r/devildaggers :P

edit: I'm on windows

Ok, so... This game freezes on Windows, you need to take a look at the windows port. But leaving that aside here is my review: This game is AWESOME, I love strafe jumping, it's like my favorite mechanic ever, I've played a lot of quake live, so, I am pretty good at it. I have tried to implement strafe jumping before (see previous Ludum Dare games) but it was very rudimentary, and not nearly as good as yours, the movement is awesome. I love the way you can rocket jump as well. Will rate high, please fix windows version :D :D

The biggest problem with this game is that I have to go to a non free website (google drive) to download it. Okay... I'm joking.

I really like the beautiful pixelated graphics. Those sprites! It made me feel like I was in the 90s playing it on my CRT. The default mouse sensitivity is much much too low, espiecially for this kind of game and if you don't set the correct resolution in the config weird display error happens. I love the mechanics and strafing is awesome. I think this game is a piece of art. It's hard to beat. I decided to beat it no matter what knowing that later I would feel proud of myself. I found the perfect strategy of jumping around in circles and spent like 30 minutes only to realise that enemies spawn over and over again, so the game has no end and can't be beaten. I was devastated. My next move was obviously to download the source and modify it so that I could beat this game. Then I realised it's all written in C... and there are so many files and so many lines and I had to idea where to look. It was all perfect, but you had to ruin everything. Thanks for wasting an hour of my life. :(

If you ever decide to fix the ending and make it a full game with more levels and release it on a DRM free platform like GOG it will be a game of the year.

Edit:
@red-fan-games
Thanks for your feedback on my game! I had a lot of fun playing your game, so the time wasn't really wasted (I was joking about that) :). Devil Daggers looks really cool, I will check it out!

absolutely nailed the graphics, though the level could've been more interesting? Maybe some pickups that give you speed or armor etc, to make the game a little more approachable

Man I wish so badly this wouldn't crash every time I start shooting, I was really looking forward to smashing this game for a while! Love arena shooters, and I love the idea you have gone for here! Some audio would have been the icing on the cake too.

Hi, I want to play this very much but windows port is messed up:
1) looks like it is frozen in black screen until i turn around and notice that I can see the floor as white dots in dark space, I can see my bullets as well but almost everything else is black.
2) no audio, I read above that there should be sound?

Mh, I'm not really good at this game. I barely survive 10 sec
The really low mouse sensitivity is really annoying. I got a kind of soft lock on the first try, the screen going all black, but without a crash or error message.
But like the creepy ambiance !

This is really nice! I love the hellish feel to it, reminded me of Space Funeral. The gameplay is pretty simplistic, although had quite a lot of different strategies to it that made it really fun. The sounds were also awesome. Good job man!

Ok so I figured out my sound problem, every time I run the game it completely kills my sound drivers and I have to wipe the game files and reboot to regain sound. :/

05. Aug 2017 · 09:29 UTC
Hello again, sound is now working great but there is still the issue with graphics on my comp, everything is black except white dots on floor and bullets fired by me. I made a screenshot to help you make a diagnose but when I looked at the screenshot image the game was not there, it showed my desktop, what a vampire of a game. I could send you system details in private if you feel like having a go at fixing it. So far I'm impressed that you added a invertY option, many games forget about that and I need that to be able to shoot anything.

That was creepy. At least killed some of these *******, but I was never good at FPS games so I don't think skulls falling from heaven would help that much. Overall the art was great (and unsettling) and subtle sounds (was it meant to be subtle or was my volume too low?) were uncanny. Next, add spiders *shivers*. I think I don't need to sleep tonight anymore.

Hey @red-fan-games Thanks for the game :) was a lot of fun to play, you put it on [my list](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/end-of-time/whos-not-had-any-love-link-your-game-for-me-to-play), and I streamed a play of it on Friday. I had fun with it and really enjoyed that old school vibe. The boost jumping felt really good. I would love to see a few more enemy types to kind of mx things up. My only real complaint if how hard it is. Maybe I'm just too old but I couldn't last very long at all. Other than that super fun. Really great job.

I love the graphics! Very retro and the entire ambiance is very well done!

This game opens up the possibility for you to add so much more content (enemies and guns) I would be glad to see a post compo-version.

Great Job!!

Wow, this is hardcore. I missed quake-style shooters back in the 90s, so I had a really hard time with the movement tech in this game (rocket jumps, strafe jumps). That being said, its a pretty awesome accomplishment. Did you cook up this 3d engine in just a weekend? Bravo.

I felt the explosion pushback power to be a bit uncontrollable, and it wasn't very clear when I was going to run out of ammo or where to pick up some more.

In Devil Daggers, I think, they removed the crosshair because you can clearly see the hand and the projectiles trajectory, but that isn't really compatible with the limited ammo.

Else it looks nice, and rocket jumping all over the place is always fun!

I love games with skill-based movement. I had a blast with this, and it made a lot more sense after watching 2GD's (beloved by all but GabeN) video on strafe jumping. I'm certainly impressed that you managed to write this in C given the time constraints, I know it definitely would *not* be my first choice of language! Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta go buy Devil Daggers. :sunglasses:

EDIT: I think what this needs, probably, is a timer or other scoring mechanism?

We streamed your game with Danae plays on Twitch. :) Here's a link:

[Danae streams Ludum Dare 39: Day 2, part 2: Plasma Arena](https://youtu.be/SeUiu4ynC54?t=1h06m20s)

The movement in this is really spot-on, I wish my quake skills were a bit better :) The ammo runs low really quickly, and the red cubes don't replenish a lot. I wish there was a HUD with my current ammo and the number of skulls left. It would make the progress in the game much more measurable.

I had fun, good job! :)

I didn't expect to like this much and sadly was right. Still wonderful 3D and everything. The jumping felt not reacting well, but opinions on that may vary.

I'm really astonished you made this whole game in POC (plain old C) What are you using LUA scripts for? (I couldn't figure that out froom your source code) Also really cool how you switch to fullscreen mode with a lower resolution und give the whole thing a retro look :D while still frightening the player.
But: I really sucked at your game and couldn't survive the first wave of flying heads. (Creepy!)

Thanks for fixing the windows version I could play it now. It felt great to see a LD entry that has 3D engine done from scratch, gives it a lot of character. Atmosphere is good, and it seems gameplay could have been as well if player had more ammo. I'm sure there is a winning tactic that involves jumping to and from the ammo refilling box, but when I turn on this sort of game I just feel like shooting a lot of stuff.
