Cave of Colors by Siegfried Croes

[raw]
made by Siegfried Croes for LD36 (JAM)
- Info -
I decided to interpret the theme as "ancient" computer technology so I made a game in the style of the games on Atari. It's an endless shooter in which you have to shoot colored enemies with the right colored beam. Collect ammunition to shoot faster.

- Controls -
Arrow keys/WASD/ZQSD: Walk around
Space/Right control: Jump
Mouse: Aim
Left mouse button (click or hold): Shoot
Right mouse button: Change beam color

- Known issues -
The mouse aiming is off on resolutions that are not a multitude of 320x360... 1280x720, 1600x900 and 1920x1080 should be fine. I'll try and look into fixing this.

This one is so nice! Great graphics, mechanics and gameplay. But sometimes I couldn't shoot, not sure if I misunderstood the mechanics or if it's a bug?

Hi, nice game and congratulations ! We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #36. We made the same thing at the previous jam.

Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description.

I really liked this game! The art was spot-on, and the shooting mechanic surprisingly fun to play about with. I'm still not sure what the item the enemies occasionally drop actually does, though. Lots of fun, and a good challenge! —StarFahx

Nice game! Nice touch making the enemies different shapes for people with color-blindness (though I'm not color-blind myself). Jumping is also a great mechanic that you seldom see in arena shooters that lets you avoid damage if you know what you're doing.

The difficulty spikes way up once the tougher enemies start showing up. I wasn't sure if the power up that spawned was a power up or spikes at first. It would be nice if you could use q and e to switch colors both ways and if you could see what the next and previous colors are.

It's simple, challenging and retro. I like this style.
I think that it's only incomplete because it doesn't have a BGM...
But it's a great game! Keep up the good work! :D

Hey, I gave your game a play on my channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xxub1Jahj3I

A fun little game, I like the art style and the attention to detail wrt color blindness accessibility.
A few more powerup types would make this more enjoyable, as well as maybe giving the enemies different abilities and introducing them at different times.
