Blackout Defense by Jacky2611

[raw]
made by Jacky2611 for LD 39 (JAM)

Defend the base against enemies without running out of power.

Screenshot_3.jpg

Controls:

WASD - Move
F - Mine Ores
Left Click - Shoot
Right Click on Base - Toggle force field (power hungry)
Right Click on Other Buildings - Activate them
Mouse Wheel - Switch weapons (if unlocked)

Buildings (we ran out of time to get explanations into the game):

Heart: revives you on right click
Circle: expands your force field
black cross: unlocks up to two new weapons
blue cross: charges your own energy
green cross: heals you red lightning: even more power for a higher price
lightning: power to keep you alive

You have to defend your base against monsters, but every building to help you with that costs power, so you also have to build powerplants (lots of them). The game lacks balancing and other things to make it a viable game, but all the core mechanics including a workings scoreboard, a randomly generated world and a nice monster AI are done. As this is/was our first LDJam, we weren't quite sure what to expect, but it turned out to be an awesome experience.

We used Unity, FL studio, open game arts for some of the audio files and some of kenny's assets. Next time we should really try to find someone who can help us in the graphics department. In retrospect I also shouldn't have spent half of my time writing a shitty AI (with no prior experience). Considering how terribly stupid it turned out it kind of feels like we should have focused more on the basebuilding part of our game.

[Second link cause I couldn't fix the original link above at first.]

I was able to move around, mine, and place buildings, but I could not really figure out what any of the buildings were meant to do.

Nice building basics, I think that you should have use "hold F" instead of "press F" as it took me sometime to understand it.

The enemies never attacked however :/

Interesting. Are you sure that they never attacked you? They should have a melee attack (without animation) that should destroy buildings and hurt you if you are their target. Did the run around or just stand still.

I am pretty sure that I fixed most AI related bugs. Usually only one or two of them stop working.

I couldn't understand how to place buildings, and it seemed like the enemies I was attacking didn't lose health. I tried to send my score on the web but it didn't seem to work neither.

Nice job for a first LD jam though ! It's not bad considering that you were only two, and that you managed ta make everyhting within the game ! Try to make more feedback next time :)

I agree with @zarkonnen there should be labels next to the towers but other than that it was good.

I didnt understand what all the buildings should do. Maybe an explanation when you hover over it should help? Well done nonetheless! :)

Yeah, adding description to the buildings was the next thing on our to-do list, but we ran out of time before I could do something about it.
We added some basic descriptions above. In addition you should be able to left click most buildings.

@khams Enemies are loosing health but they have no healthbar. Just keep shooting at them. And you place buildings by pressing the buildings button. You need to have enough metal and energy to place them though.

It appears like some features are broken on the webplayer though. The windows version appears to be fine though.
(scoreboard and maybe also the wave system)

I liked this, i mean the main idea of the game, like a tower defense with a neat system of power decreasing with time, but i would just say that your game only lacks of Feedbacks, like am i mining actually, what does this building, how much energy do i have left.
Anyway, i can totally understand that you ran out of ... time (lol), well done overall ! :)

The game is nice, it's actually great considering the time of creation. The first time I booted the game I was a bit lost, but then returned to the game page I read your instructions and got immediately how it worked (except for the red generator that took me a lot to understand that was actually placeable, because I was waiting for it to turn white). I do agree with @steing, a little bit of feedback wold be awesome. Also some fast polish (screen shaking, particle emitters) would be make the game awesome.
I also really appreciated the fact that someone using unity actually used the HTML5 export, thank you!

PS: if you used assets not made by you, you should opt out the votes in that category. It seems to me that you're using the same awesome tileset that I used too as the base for my game: http://kenney.nl/assets/topdown-shooter

Good idea and effort, I liked the soundtrack. It was very hard however to shoot enemies because for me the mouse seemed a bit off. Also i suddenly started to walk left for no reason and could not stop it. But for the time you had well done.

Hmmm. Playing the web version, nothing really happened... I walked around. The game told me to press F to mine and it didn't seem to work. No enemies ever showed up.

the mechanics were interesting but you should have a method to recharge the energy of the building

Couldn't ultimately figure out what I was suppose to be doing. Sounds was really good. I could move around, shoot, and I could mine but took forever to figure out how (have to hold F). Never saw any enemies to shoot at and never figured out what the building actually did.

Seemed like a good idea though.

For a first LD entry, it's a really nice project! And don't worry about running out of time, you did start a project and published it, and it's the most important step there! ;) The concept of the game's really nice, mixing some resource management, base building and twin-stick shooter like mechanics, but there are some points I think it's good to polish.

As you said, the game needs balancing, but shooting also kinda strange, as I expected the player character to shoot in the mouse's direction, and not straight, some feedback when mining would also be really nice.

You already have a great start there, so keep going! ;) Good Luck there! :)
