KNOWN ISSUES:

  • ~~Difficulty too hard (Will tweak this weekend)~~

POST-LD TO-DO:

  • Add course map timeline to bottom of the screen showing where ball is in relation to hole
  • Add different sprites for enemies

This is the mash up of two incompatible genres: Golf Games and DoubleDragon-esque brawlers. Fight through the rough greens battling off other golfers while trying to get your ball to the hole!

  • WASD or Arrows to Move
  • Space to Attack

This is my second Ludum Dare and it was a blast. I hope you enjoy the game as much as I enjoyed making it!! Feel free to report bugs and I'll add them to the list to fix! This game will be continued after Ludum Dare, so look out for a mobile release with polish!

Awesome work man, was really fun. I don't think it was *too* hard, if you make it any easier it won't really be a challenge. What you could consider is maybe adding difficulty levels, so the players can choose for themselves, making the game a fit for more people.

But yeah, I really enjoyed it. Perhaps it would be nice to actually have to aim the golf ball and have some calming music when you're supposed to hit the ball & not in a fight etc, just to let the player get some "breathing time", if that makes any sense. If the dope electric guitar riff is going to play all the time, it get's pretty repetitive and exhausting.

Game is fun and looks great! I like the artwork.

I know you've mentioned the difficulty already, but for a specific criticism/suggestion, I think the player's damage recovery should be quicker. If you get surrounded by a lot of evil golfers, they can get into a pattern where you never recover long enough to move away or react. Maybe cut the time that you are immobile, but allow the player a short period of movement where they are still protected from new attacks?

I think you have a great start for a larger game here if you make the improvements you listed above.

This is what 7 years old me wanted to do when I only had golf games on the old win98 PC my family had.
Apart from the fact that enemies can stunlock you too much, it's very fun. Loved it

Fun to play, and I like the difficulty. Maybe I didn't play long enough but I'd love to see some water hazards, maybe a sand trap that slows down the character movement. Possibly club upgrades? Cart bonus round that lets me run down the enemies? Lots of potential here. Thoughts for later I guess.

Hey Brandon! I really love what you did with the concept haha, I wasn't quite sure what you were going to do after our meetup but it came out fun! Something to be improved on is how the enemies attack, I get a little frustrated when they can hit me from four sides but I can only attack left and right. Makes positioning pretty difficult. Awesome work!

Hahaha, the title Five Iron Frenzy is great, also the name of a band i like :) the concept reminds me of OUTLAW golf where you can beat up your opponants haha :) good fun :) tad hard, but fun none the less.

Very fun ! Love the audio ! It's a pity we do not have a score for the challenge or event a little timeline on the bottom of the screen to see if there is an end or not. Also the invivibility time when you are hit is too short. The animation is pretty cool and the character to ! :) Love the combination !

@maximebugman That's a wonderful idea for a timeline. Something like a course map that shows the ball in real-time with the flag at the end. I'll add that the to-do. The stun lock will definitely be worked this weekend. =)

Ahah, fun and efficient game. Some variation on the environment could be interesting (like sand or water to change the mechanics) and to be able to shoot an enemy with the ball to unlock some power ups or points could be interesting too (with a chance to send the ball backward).

Cool concept! I like the overall ambiance and music, the game is very challenging, the sounds when playing could have been recorded with instruments too to make it more immersive, maybe a battery sound when kicking the ball. Anyway, good job, great mood & fun :thumbsup:

I enjoyed the game. The music loop was pretty great and fit the whole theme and feel of the game well. The graphics were nice but could use some variety. I liked the swing animation!

I found the combat to be a little flat though. You could just position yourself against the side of the screen and repeatedly attack until all the enemies were dead.

Overall this is very nice work. The name wasn't inspired by the band Five Iron Frenzy by any chance, was it?

@minibobbo, Haha no, I actually didn't find out until after I published when my friend told me of the band. Oh well! I definitely agree about the graphics as I ran out of time in the COMPO. I plan on creating more in the Post-LD version. Thanks for playing!

Some great effort gone into this. I like the idea of the combination, and they do impact one another. Downside is the beat em up element was repetitive, and you knew to expect it after each shot so became a little more tiresome. Could be something more balanced like chance of fight increased based on how good your golf shot was, so they effect eachother moreso. Some more enemies / attack moves would have been nice too.

Good pixel art, and fun to play. Fights were a little too hard, with too loose controls, to be really fun, and I would have liked a better sense of where the hole was I was shooting for, but those are minor criticisms for a game that's well put together. Also, in the era of Eric Garner and Tamir Rice, it would be nice if the guys attacking you weren't darker people, but instead some other color palette choice.
