Stable Orbit by mrspeaker

One small step for pixel man... Maintain a stable orbit, that is your only goal. Getting some stability in your life seems like a good idea, but you know what they say - "orbital mechanics is harder than it looks".

Wow, great little game and nicely polished. I love the sound effects and theme song... Was quite a challenge to orbit, but that just made it worth the effort. If I do say so myself.

Very challenging game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation [video series](https://youtu.be/MygbzdcNT_8), if you’d like to take a look :)

Hehe, reminds me of Atari Lunar Lander! This game makes playing with momentum fun, and the music builds a nice atmosphere!

Music is very atmospheric, real nice. Game difficulty is high as finding and maintaining the balance on thrust is hard. Maybe some rcs for control might help.

Overall, nice work.

Nice! It plays very well and I really like the aesthetic. 👍

Really nice background music and aesthetics. The controls were challenging at first but got easier the longer i played. An end goal like landing your character on a specific area would have been nice, still fun and challenging though.

Nice and clean. I believe music should be higher on volume respect the effects.
Can I ask which library is POP?

I knew I wanted gravity in my game when I started it, but this is great! The sounds and graphics work nicely, and it is more challenging than it first seems to get an orbit :)

I love this so much!! You have no idea. Although I totally suck at this. Apparently my skill in KSP doesn't translate here :) Fantastic job though. I especially like spacebar to reset. When you're going for "do it right once" that's a pretty natural mechanic. Only suggestion would be to make it slightly easier haha.

@homineludens... oh yep, I think you're correct about sfx vs tune volume. Really I should have made the "fail" sounds a lot less... annoying, as you're supposed to fail often.

Pop is my own library - it's just for learning/teaching purposes, and I wanted to make sure it could actually be used to make a lil' game!

That was fun. I wish there was more. Like multiple levels with obstacles making it harder to get into a stable orbit.

My own game includes a level where you have to get into orbit (though it is made really easy in my game). I was wondering if other people would do something similar.

I would definitely play more of this, since there is something really satisfying about getting into orbit, especially the way it is presented here.

Fun little game! Took me a couple of minutes to get a stable orbit. The music is great!

Just one thing: The soundeffects should be a bit lower on volume. But I like the soundeffects themselves.

Nice little game. It was quite a challenge. In the beginning i didn't really understand what to do. You could have maybe added a tutorial(I understand that this is not always possible in this short amount of time). The graphics were really cool. The sound was also fitting but the death sound was too loud in my opinion. This was a really nice concept even though I think I wouldn't play it again after finishing it once. Good Job!

Music needed to be louder or sound effects softer. Some sort of visual hint as to how high up is safe to fly would be nice. Fun little mechanic though. The graphics are nice and clean. If you get a chance please check out our entry https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/down-the-rabbit-hole

Nice and moody. Really like the concept and name of the game! Starts of challenging but once you get it down it's really not that hard. Would be really interested in seeing additional challenges, perhaps involving multiple planets. Definitely see potential here.

Man that was challenging! I enjoyed it. My ego would not allow me to stop until I managed to get a stable orbit - took about five minutes of jumping and bouncing my head real hard, but I got it in the end.

Nice simple little game. Good work!

Nice! Took some fiddling to get the hang of it, but the learning curve was just right. It feels like you took a small and clear game, clearly on theme, and executed it very well. A minor idea would be to make it clearer in-game what the goal is (I had to check back to this page). Nevertheless, great fun, and good on you being able to keep tabs on the scope.

I really like this game. The concept is great, the controls are good, it looks great, and it sounds great. It would be nice if it was made a little more obvious what the goal was. Once I did figure it out, it was a lot of fun trying to get the little astronaut in an orbit.

Really well presented game that doesn't pull any punches with the difficulty! Loved the atmospheric background music, which is especially rare in LD entries, and the SFX were good too. Might have been nice to have some kind of subtle hint about when you were getting too far away from the planet's gravity.

Cute little game. Audio really fit the "atmosphere" and added to the game. Graphics were minimalistic and well done. Getting into orbit wasn't that difficult once you got the feel for the gravity of the planet. It also would have been cool to add more obstacles; the single rock felt slightly out of place since it was the only one.

Overall, nice job! Especially for compo.

So, I go up - I die, I go left - I die, I go right - I die, I go down - I die, I touch the planet - I die. The goal is to make a circle? I did so after 20 tries, but got nothing. The goal is to make as much circles as possible? Well... no, thanks, it's hard as hell T_T.

As an avid KSP player, this definitely appealed to me, and after ~10-15 tries I got a stable orbit! I really like the quick restart button because the game can be quite hard so being able to restart very quickly is a nice addition.

Liked the concept and gameplay. I really wanted some feedback on an objective to do, as just having a stable orbit is not something fun as an only task to do. Sfx and music fitted the game nicely. Overall a nice game.

Very nice graphic + atmosphere, but the too hard off the bat. Maybe create some very soft constraints in the beginning and make them less forgiving for new levels etc. would have worked better in this case. Props to innovation.

OMG, I did it! Holy cow, I f@$%# did it!!
I didn't even know it was possible but I did it!!!!

Very challenging game. I was getting so frustraded, I expected to get some points or something after every revolution but nothing, and then I finally got to just chill in orbit and that was it! I felt very rewarded just by those two simple words "Stable Orbit" hahaha.
Cool game, nice atmosphere :D

I gotta agree though, that for a game made in a jam (compo, whatever), when you start by failing over and over again, few people will keep playing... I almost left without knowing that the game had an end (but omg it really felt so cool when I got that stable orbit, have I said that already? hahahaha)

YAYYY, I got into a stable orbit. This game felt super awesome, really nice mood, really nice art style, good audio. This game is awesome, really enjoyed playing it, I wish there were more levels now.

I love that it is made in HTML5 as well, it's so accessible, I want to make my next game a web game.

Thanks for this game, it was awesome!

Nice tight rage-inducing but rewarding game here. The contrast between the sublime background music when I finally got to float a moment in space, versus the aggressive slamming sound of the game over was on point.

All the deaths were my fault. I was EXTREMELY glad I could hit space and skip the bit-too-slow natural retry loop.

Great game. Nice challenge and educational. A few notes

- If I reach escape velocity, I fail too quickly. Sometimes it's given me the mean beeps even before it's obvious to me that i'm going too fast. I think you should leeave me to fly away a bit further, so that it's clear to me that I'm dead, before declaring that I'm dead.
- The left/right controls could be more sensitive maybe? Not sure
- Great art, love it.
- as someone mentioned, counting your numberof laps, or fuel use, or time in the air would help give the game a bit more purpose.
- maybe at some point add something else to do....collect coins, avoid obstacles, or whatever

Great stuff :D good job. Really enjoyed it.

Aaaaa. <3 First I didn't get it at all, and then I did! Then I made it, and it said stable orbit and I thought I'd made it, but then bumped into the thing and it said I failed anyway, so I thought I was supposed to have kept steering. Finally made it again and that didn't happen this time, so that convinced me it was actually the win state, haha.

Once I got it, it was a really neat, but difficult game! But just the level of difficulty that's needed for such a small game, so that it's incredibly rewarding once you finally get it. Not the frustrating kind of difficult!

Art direction is great. Super clean and stylish. Same goes for audio which fits really well together with the rest.

I can't say much more! It's a really polished entry and I love it. <3 Good job!

Fun game! I thought the outer boundary was just a hair too punishing. Let me try wacky stuff and see if I can rein it back in and level out, you know? Along those lines, I also enjoyed trying to intentionally lose in funny ways. You can get some really good, spinning bounces if you angle it right! A nice little secondary game within the game!

Only thing is that I didn't know what the goal was, until I read the comments here. Without out that I was just trying to circle the globe, and was on a verge of giving up, and giving meh scores. But when I read that you can achieve Stable orbit, I was hooked again. It took me several minutes, but I did it!!!

The game feels complete and i like how the game just starts and the title is the end screen. Very clever. For some reason i managed to get in a stable orbit with the 4th try. I needed over ten tries to reproduce it. I think you could have used another approach to the outer radius limit, for example adding asteroids or other satellites or deactivating the gravity over a specific point and a LOST IN SPACE failure state. That's just personal taste, of course.

This game is awesome, maybe a little too hard at first but really fun. Technically, looking at the size of the planet and it's gravitational pull, I'd say it's made of something really heavy and condensed. That doesn't restrict me from playing still :D It's great fun (well, having played other space simulators like KSP, it's rather easy ;)) Here's my game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/fixville

I failed at doing that a lot, like so many times. Think I got there in the end, I'm guessing there is no 'win' state though? Manged to orbit about 6 times without intervention so I'm counting that as a win. Really liked the audio, gave it lonely spacey atmosphere

Whoa, I totally missed playing this one. Great entry! The graphics is simple yet very fitting. Combined with the music it creates a pretty good atmosphere. I appreciated the simple control too. This is really my kind of game, i.e. you fail often but just keep trying until you succeed. Good job!

P.S. one thing you could add is a failure counter. hehe
