Card 'Em Up by sandsower

[raw]
made by sandsower for LD 41 (COMPO)

v1.1 Update.gif

Move with WASD, play cards with left click, reshuffle your deck with right click. Collect cards left by enemies to build up your deck!

Blue cards (bullets) adds more shots to your deck, so that those pesky Blank cards are less of a hassle.

Red cards (super) let you fire a super shot, slow moving but very powerful.

Green cards (points) act as a Blank so they don't do damage, but they'll score you 100 points at the end.

Remember to post your top score! You need to wait for the death animation to finish and then you'll see your final score (you get +100 points per score card you pick up in addition to enemies killed)

Cool idea, I like that you took the idea of a deck building game that's more common in board games and added to to an action video game. One thing I didn't like was that I got pretty overwhelmed with enemies by the 3rd level. I spawned in the middle and there were so many bad guys forming a tight circle I felt I couldn't escape. Overall it was a neat game, I think if you were to put more time into it more types of cards would be welcome.

Thanks for the feedback @derek-wilson! Yeah, I'm gonna add more cards to make the choice of picking up cards more interesting, right now with only 3 options it's a bit limited. Also, difficulty is way out of wack but you do get more points for the more difficult enemies to balance it out.

Do you remember what your best score was? I'm trying to put up the best scores up on the entry.

Hmm, I can't remember. I'll try to give it another play later on!

Movement was a bit to slow for me, but overall a good concept and design. I would be cool to see this idea expanded on. Good Job!

pretty fun! I got 420 by spam clicking my cards everywhere 😋 . the screen-shake feels a bit weird without sounds...

I spammed too, and got around 300 multiple times.

As someone else said, the deck building side gets occulted real quick and doesn't feel that important, because all cards are basically helping.

But still, nice little shooter. Congrats.

And feel free to try my game here : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/asimovs-breakout

Simple graphics but funny game, it's challenging! It's very satisfying when you shoot a red card against multiple enemies in line! I don't understand if the cards are infinite, if so I think that put a limitation would be even more challenging! Very nice work!

Hey man really nice game! The gameplay felt good. There was some odd times when i would get stuck on the corners unable to move but i couldnt reproduce it.

My score was my highscore was 632 - The red guys are what killed me every single time because after a certain point they come in behind the big fat blue guys and you are unable to shoot at them through the big guys who have a bagillion hp lol.

Much more fun than I expected! Good job!

Not sure if/how to prevent card spamming - maybe slower pace and more card variation?

Also, you should try to rate games from the "Danger" list - this will in turn get you more ratings.

Nice idea. Wasn't abble to hold on alive for very long on the game but the concept is cool and easy to understand.

Cool game but some audio would have made it a lot better. All in all it was quite fun and unique.

I got 725 for my top score! My game was very similar to this, though in 3D! I was playing in a much slower-paced fashion cause of my game, then I realised you can play cards very VERY quickly. It was really fun cutting through waves of enemies shooting out your cards like a mini-gun. The difficulty curve was quite severe once you reached round 3/4, I'd love to see more use of formations of enemies. So one wave could be a triangle of the fast red enemies that you have to attack tactically. Really, a great entry. Keep making games!
