TENORMS by Mathstr0fficial

[raw]
made by Mathstr0fficial for LD 42 (COMPO)

TENORMS (an acronym for Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive MaterialS) is an action platformer based around a guy trying to get into an exploded nuclear reactor. The closer he gets, though, the less space he has to maneuver around the gradually mutated enemies that call the wastelands home. Be warned, there are 4 different levels, and it gets hard fast. See if you can get through them all!

BUG: Pause menu resets the level, don't use unless absolutely necessary.

Shooting fix is coming, check back soon!

Controls: Arrow keys to move. C to shoot (only works when still)/select menu options. X to pause the game.

the HTML5 link doesn't seem to work for me. the webpage isn't functioning. I get the following error:

@skytiger Sorry about that! It's fixed now, try it again.

Great fun, but a few more levels in an update would really do this game some good.

This is a good start to a basic platform-shooter. I think it would help if you made the slime a slightly different color, as it can be hard to tell apart from the grass if you're not looking closely. I'd also like to be able to shoot faster, but that could just be that I'm not very good at the game.

@squirmonkey I tried to make the slime distinguishable from the grass, and it worked for me, maybe that's a problem of having different monitors. The shooting is meant to be slow, I have it set to not fire again for an approximately 0.3 second delay until the animation finishes. Any faster and it glitched and shot the bullets out of the head, and I had no time to fix it. Thanks for all the feedback!

Having 'c' to select menu options is not a common input. I would put that on the main menu somewhere so people don't give up trying to figure it out.

@paden-shorey I do have "C for menu controls" in my post, though I do agree it's not a common input. I just prefer having games take up as little key space as possible. If I ever dev this past LD, it will become a more common key to select options.

Space running out the further you get is a cool idea, just can't get there to see it unless you give me a machinegun instead of that piddly pistol.

A simple platformer, though controls need some work. Also, turning around makes the character move waaay too much, when he should really only turn around (I think you made the character's origin point the top left rather than center middle or bottom middle, which would explain such erratic movement). Shooting feels really clunky and mostly useless.

It's not, by any means, a bad start though!

Fun game! Really challenging. Graphics are cool too. I like how everything get progressively more slimey. Well done :D

@nobleboy I can't really argue there, it is REALLY slow shooting. Any faster would've made the bullets come out of the player's head, which isn't ideal.

@jsmcag The origin is indeed the top left, though I didn't think it was very obvious. Maybe my eyes just hurt after so long working on the project as a whole, I'm not sure. I also can't disagree with the shooting, for the most part it's more of a don't-get-hit-on-the-platforming-so-you-can-rush-through-the-enemies-later.

But both of you, thanks for the feedback! I'm going to be publishing a post-LD version with more levels and better shooting, so check the links!

@albin Thanks! I'm surprised you didn't have anything to say about the slow shooting like everyone else, but I'm glad you liked it! Did you manage to beat it? Honestly, I'd be surprised if you had, I haven't, though I know it's possible.

@mathstr0fficial nope I did not manage to beat it. I rage quitted after a while lol. Might come back to it later though.

@albin How far did you manage? The slime in level 3 is pretty tough, that's where I get stuck the most.

@squirmonkey / @Nobleboy / @JSMCAG / @albin I have it on good authority that the shooting is fixed and the game will be updated to reflect that soon, if any of you are able/willing to try it again later today or tomorrow. :)

My own review: the shooting kinda sucks (fixes incoming, tho, now--yay!). The game is soooo much harder just because you're so ill-equipped to handle the enemies. I wonder if the game will be too easy with the improved shooting, but I guess we'll see...

Overall, I really, really like the concept and story, and I really like the mechanics that have been implemented. I'd like to see more of the mechanics and enemies combined to make newer and more intricate levels... The boost cells and the falling bridge blocks are some of the more visually cool things, as are [art things later in the game--no spoilers]. And the art in general, well, the pseudo- and actual bosses in particular are pretty darn creative and cool--you get better and better at art and coding and styling with every new game.

Keep up the good work! :)

I really like the diverse amount of different enemies. It was quite difficult, I couldn't get past level 2 :)
Overall I really like the idea and pixel art style.

Woow, nice one, i loved the pixel art style and the different levels (i never managed to make a j&r with levels and everything in 48h from scratch, hehe).
the only thing that could be improved are the controls and the player physics, the gravitation is pretty high, and you should make the players hitbox smaller than two blocks, i got stuck several times when trying to pass underneath the tree.
Other than that, great entry, good job!
p.s.: great music theme!
