DroneOut - competetive shoot 'em up.

In DroneOut you need to beat the AI by killing more drones, having better accuracy and by being more efficient with ammo and health.

About the game

After clicking start, you're placed in an arena with an AI player. Game consists of waves and to start one press the 'F' key.

You can attack enemy drones by firing your gun using left mouse button which deals more damage, or use melee attack with your 'V' key. On the display on your gun, you can see (from top to buttom) amount of ammo in your magazine, amount of ammo you have stored and health bar. To replenish your health or ammo, pick up rotating bags enemy drones sometimes drop when killed.

When you get killed (your healthbar reaches 0), you will be presented with a statistics screen and a leaderboard dialog where you can input your username and get to the top of the leaderboard! You can check out the leaderboard here: http://nufflee.com/droneout .

Have fun and feel free to send your score to the leaderboard! Also let me know how it goes on my Twitter (https://twitter.com/Nufflee )!

Controls

Mouse movement - look around

Left mouse button - shoot with your gun

'R' key - reload

'V' key - melee attack

'F' key - spawn next wave (if current is finished)

This is definitely nice use ot the theme. My only real "criticism" would be not using Time.deltaTime when needed - on highest settings game feels too sluggish, gun returns from recoil 15 seconds later. And too much motion blur. Other than that - I love it.

Thank you for your feedback @mintarcade! We didn't really notice these issues but we will sure look into them as we plan to continue working on the game.

The game looks pretty good. I loved the gon and the colors.

Some variety in the enemies or walls in the arena might make the game more enjoyable.
Also I ended up running out of ammo. The AI was dead so I could only run in circles waiting to die... Maybe increasing the ammo drops solve that problem. Once you run out of ammo is game over.

Nice game guys!

Nice theme implementationand I have to say I love the slick UI. Next step is actually having another player there to compete with, but nice work! I like it! :p

I liked the colors and the glass barrier and watching the AI opponent do his thing. This entry is visually appealing.
I don't know if I like having ammo as a resource. reloading is fine, but running out of ammo feels like a chore.

I'd be interested to see where you go with this one!

Thanks for the feedback everyone!
@DUUUUDE When you run out of ammo you can use 'V' key, it's melee attack which doesn't require bullets and the killed drones might still drop ammo packs.
@kjeks As we're planning to continue working on the game, we are planning to add local and maybe even online multiplayer but thanks for the suggestion.
@Arden And yeah, as I said, you can use 'V' key for melee attack if you're out of ammo.

@DUUUUDE, thank you for your feedback!

We had issues with how the AI works and because we had no time left, we were unable to make him pass more waves...
The game becomes unbalanced after wave 7 and that is when he starts losing his health & ammo.

I love to see another game using public highscores and am somewhat surprised to see so few entries (we have the same problem on our game). It works well and feels intuitive, the only thing I don't quite get is why you put so much rng in the wavesize. That seems to somewhat go against the competitive aspect of the game and can make it hard to even beat the AI.
🎤 Nufflee
24. Apr 2018 · 16:33 UTC
@radow There's actually not a lot of rng. Enemy drone health and damge is the same for AI and the player but I do agree that it would be more competitive if amount of enemy drones would be equal for the player and the AI. Another reason why you might think that there's a lot of rng is that AI advances through waves a bit faster usually so that means that you probably are not on the same wave as the AI. Thanks for the feedback and sending your score to the leaderboard!

Yea, I was talking about the amount of drones and the amount of pickups. On my first try I had a rather big first wave (compared to subsequent tries) followed by a second wave of only 2 drones, which seemed a bit odd.
On another try I seemed to be running out of amo and I put that down to pickup-rng, but it might also have been my bad aiming on that run^^
I'll make sure to give it another go sometime tonight in order to improve and see if there are other highscore entries by then =)

@radow Could be, the game still needs a lot of balancing... And thanks for giving another try!

It was pretty funny, even if I don't find the theme(sorry if it is there) but I like FPS games, so it got me for this. I liked the lowpoly graphics, and very happy to see a game using leader boards. There could be some improvements for the AI but it's still good. GG!

The shooting feels really good here. the movement however is a bit awkward... Had fun and really like the idea of a competitive horde/wave mode
Also, watching you're stream atm :P

Cool setup, took me a second to realize I was supposed to spawn my own waves, instead of trying to shoot the orange dudes. Maybe start the first wave automatically? I like the clean polygon style.
Movement controls feel a bit floaty, and the melee attack lacked a bit of force or speed I think. That would make it a bit more impactful, makes it feel like you're actually smashing those dudes into pieces.

Public high scores are a rad idea. Took me a while to understand what to do, and the movement could be smoother, but this is definitely worth polishing up, it's a good game.

It was pretty good to play although I have a few complaints. The sounds kind of feel a little quiet done, so it makes it little weak as a weapon, the melee attack also does not have much power to it, it could use a sound effect, and a smaller animation. The spawning your own wave thing kind of took me a while to get. The movement is a little awkward as it seems it works on a lerping system. Also it's a little weird to see health on the gun rather than always being visible. Although great work, and keep on making.

I like the design of the enemies moving in, and the visual style of the HUD being on the back of the gun. That was a nice touch. Also, having an online leader board is great and encourages replay of the game. I never felt in danger of the AI having a higher kill count than me, and each time I died, my count was still higher.

The melee attack felt kinda pointless though. You seemed to have to be to close to use it, and in the later waves ~wave 5, using it is almost certain death.

Overall you have a good base to make this into something once polished up. I'm not getting which genres that are incompatible this is for, for the theme though.

Good work.

Simple graphics but funny game, nice idea! I like the drone models! Maybe the melee attack is not so much efficient in my opinion, sometimes I didn't realize if I was hitting the enemy or not.. however good work!

Nice graphics and a good take on the theme. An in-game tutorial would have been nice, and the movement felt a little clunky, but overall a great game. I checked out your source code and I think I can learn a lot from your design choices.

Very cool! I love the minimalist graphics and the overall concept. The one thing I would recommend is adding an automatic reload when the player tries to shoot with an empty clip
