Snack & Slash is a cooking-brawler game made for Ludum Dare 41. You are a chef, a serious, super serious chef. Your job is to create the most delicious dishes, with the finest ingredients, and these ingredients just happen to be ultra cute and sentient.

After you start the game you will be tasked with gathering ingredients that need to be prepped a specific way. For example, if you are tasked with getting 3 whipped eggs you need to grab the whisk from the kitchen, head to the fridge area, and attack some egg guys. You need to optimize your route to complete each order on time for your guests!

You can be asked to whip an enemy (use the whisk), fry an enemy (use the pan), scoop the enemy (use the scoop), or chop the enemy (use the knife). At the end of the order you need to return to the counter and interact to deliver your meal.

PC Controls-

Attack/Change Recipe/Pick up Weapon/Deliver Order- Left Mouse Button

Rotate Camera - Mouse Position

Move - WASD

Xbox Controller

Attack/Change Recipe/Pick up Weapon/Deliver Order- A

Rotate Camera - Mouse Position - Right Stick

Move - Left Stick

Update 1- Named the game and placed it in game.

This game is a masterpiece.
Art style and direction is super cute and super well done, that's a lot of modelling for not a lot of time and it came out great. The Gameplay is fun once you figure out how it works, and the A.I of each ingredient is well written, they can really get around those rooms. My only complaint is that it could be a little more challenging, the time limit is high enough that I never need to rush to make a recipe, and hitting the wrong ingredient doesn't give enough of a penalty to be a challenge.
Overall this is quite possibly the best game game I've ever seen and it deserves a top spot, well done!

HO... LY... SMOKES! I'm speechless. You managed to make this amazing game alone in the same amount of the time it took us (a team of 8) to make our game, and it's flawless... You amaze me.

I absolutely LOVE your models, they are the pinacle of cuteness and the sound effects make it perfect. I adore your artstyle, you managed to keep a consistant style through-out all your models and they all look amazing. The gameplay worked fantastically, I love that you can alter the angle a bit mid hit so that you hit your target and the animations are spot-on.

I felt like we were rivals before, since we were making the same kind of game, but now I feel like your an inspiration to us all.

Also: I added you to the "Favourite Picks Ludum Dare 41" list on my profile, just so you know.

@Dj-Depressive Oh, I definitely need to tell you we were a team of two! @niclupfer does the code all while I do the art so it's not as crazy as it seems! haha, I wish I could have done it all on my own. I am just extremely flattered by what you've said, you are too kind! We've done quite a few jams now so we are getting quicker at it haha.

I am super excited to play your game, from what I have seen there are some really interesting differences that I am excited to discover! Thanks for being so so nice :')

It was a really fun game to play. Remind me of Overcook on nintendo Switch that I’ve recently played. I like your 3D graphics. We also make a cinematic game with pixel art. Mind to check it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/daxua

I've been seeing your progress on both Twitter and LDJam blog posts, and the final output did not disappoint at all! Of all the games I've played, I played this the longest! Definitely reminds me of Overcooked but a lot more violent :D The fish on legs got me LOL'd out really loud :P

The 3D models and animations are impressive! (3d animator here :P) The audio is nice and soothing, definitely an unusual theme, for sure!

I did have problems with the camera facing, it's a bit too smooth and kinda hard to control, and chopped nuts is the worst dual combo i had - tiny nut, small hit point (knife), lol.

Also, the randomized cooking technique + food has also got me LOL'ing - Chopped pasta?! An Italian out there is sobbing violently XD Whisked fish/steak? LOL LOL!

11/10!

So good! The graphics are really cute and well made, pretty impressive considering the time limit. About the game, I liked the main mechanics but I think it would be more challenging if the ingredients could fight you back (stunning the character for a short period of time, maybe?).

Great job, congrats for an excellent entry!

@Chikoness thanks for all of the feedback and kind words! : D I see what you're talking about with the camera. Could I actually ask if you were using webgl or the windows build? I think that the webgl build has some issues with the camera facing you are talking about, I will look into it.

And also about the randomized cooking technique, originally we were going to make sense of it but it was so funny that we just left it in. Love getting whisked nuts and a scoop of egg :' )

@Fran-Segura yeah, that's a good point! we talked a bit about having it to where maybe if an enemy bumped into you you lose some of the ingredients you have collected. I believe we decided to go with no effect because we wanted the focus to be on scared veggies that don't really have any power over you, and also for the fun of the chase without interruption. Thanks for the feedback! ( :

Amazing game some of the combinations were quite funny! was a little unclear what i had to do at first and what I had to do when I completed my first recipe, a little more work and this would feel really polished!

It is WAY too hard. It either needs more time per recipe, quicker attacks, or attacks that have an AOE. Otherwise, great concept, very fun

25. Apr 2018 · 21:23 UTC
@Carvster Yeah, I could definitely see some improvements being made on the instructions. I thought we could have a little note on your recipe that tells you to return to the counter when a recipe is done, that would be quite helpful. I think it's a lot to learn at once, especially at the beginning at the moment, thanks for your thoughts ( :

@infinitycore yeah, we got some feedback on it also being too easy so it's going to be interesting to find that balance. It could be that some of the ingredients are harder to hit since they are so small, so maybe we need to up the time for the harder ingredients. Thanks for the feedback!

This is an incredibly charming game that is a lot of fun. Would love to see this expanded with more weapons and ways to accomplish the recipes. Great work!

This game is beautiful and a ton of fun. I loved the challenge of needing to find the ingredient and whack it with the required tool. At first I was a bit confused until it was pointed out to me that there is an adjective before each ingredient defining what to hit it with. Great work!

Took me a while to catch on, but after that it was quite fun. The really slow attack was a bit annoying, though. I would have liked if different weapons would have had different attack speeds, reach, etc.

Bonus points of the excellent punny title!

The graphics and art style are delightful. Very interesting game concept. The only negative things I have to is that the audio gets somewhat repetitious, and it can be somewhat hard to navigate at first. Overall great job! Really liked the vegetables.

Might try a system of increasing the complexity and difficulty. Like only starting with one utensil and one room to explore then slowly adding on.

I love the art style! But personally I think it needs a little more of light or be a little more saturated, but anyway it's amazing and cute!
The gameplay reminds me a little of overcooked but with alive ingredients XD Maybe it needs to be a little more challenging, but overall it's very well done!
Good job!

Really really cute graphics and nice music! The camera was a little nauseating but that's a known issue in the web build though. I also found the attacking sound a little annoying and jarring. Additionally it seems to be missing a sense of progression, it would be nice to unlock other things over time. Maybe a cooking metroidvania?

   for making this game on your own. Thought the game was incredibly charmimg. Music fits in with the theme and sound effects are great. The animations are great too. Fairly optimized as well for a 3D game running on a browser - bearing in mind how good the characters and props look. After playing it in browser, I'm gonna download the exe.

If you polish up the controls and maybe include a sprint button, you've got a piece of art here. Well done.

I love everything about this game except how insane the camera is when your trying to move around and attack. I tried adjusting camera sensitivity too, but that didn't help. Super original, amazing 3d graphics, good sound too.

I played this on stream! It was a pleasure to play, and a great experience!

I loved the art style, that steak looked so cute! Plus the giant utensils were really fun!

One thing I would add would be splitting the sections up into levels, it was alot to take in at the start.

Another thing which is basically just polish is a resteraunt to the other side of the dishes, probably with simple ai/customers and waiters so I feel my work getting the dish cut up/scooped up can be seen :yum:

A real treat to play, you should be proud
