Pre Alpha Build by PlusMinus

[raw]
made by PlusMinus for LD 42 (JAM)

PAB is a simple base-builder with random generated buildings' forms.

We didn't manage to finish everything in time, even though we have most of assets ready.

There are some troubles with interface, so open it fullscreen please.

LD42 promo2.png

And some tips:

Upgrades don't upgrade your built buildings. Destroy them if you want to free the space for better buildings.

There is no repairment.

Rotate during building with a rotate button or 'r'.

Left shift to build multiple buildings.

There is no help for you this time.

last link is unfixed build.

Had a lot of fun with this one! The shapes are evil; thanks for making it so hard to fit them together nicely haha. In your screenshot it looks like building types can take different shapes? Or you can break down buildings?
Thanks for making me laugh with the "help" button. Also ,love the pixel art.

Nice work!

@rosypenguin Thank you for playing. You can upgrade buildings' size in laboratory (select it and hope the screen doors would open, then press buttons there with words "size"), but you have do destroy your old buildings to set new smaller and better ones.

Tower defense Tetris. Reminds me of the classic Amiga game Rampart. Oh man that was glorious. Anyways back to the review..

Graphics are for sure the strongest driving force for this game. Nicely done artist!

Theme is very well implemented and the game is innovating.

It really needs some sound effects for the turrets and the enemies to give much needed feedback on whats going on. For example scorpions stop animating when they attack. At one point I thought the game crashed. Music is awesome Synthwave stuff. There seems to be multiple tracks of music? Nice, but that's not alone carrying the audio side of the game unfortunately.

Help button says NOPE to me! WTF help button, you are not very helpful!

Would be nice to have a button that would change the shape of the building as a keyboard key, like R is for rotate. Maybe pause key also. Just a personal preference.

The building HP isn't displaying in real time, so the player needs to click on the building again to refresh the HP.

Sometimes I ended up resource buildings all destroyed but got decent defenses up. Maybe destroying the building yourself could refund some resources? Or there could be very slight resource generation by default.

I hope the building block would stay with the cursor after I place the building, so that I could quickly build multiple similar buildings. Now you need to click the building icon again every time.

Both the enemy variation and building variation seems good. Had to have rocket launcher for the tanks and blast cannon for the fast horde of enemies. Yet I don't know what the expensive laboratory does.

One enemy from the top were shooting my wall off screen where turrets couldn't fire back. It kept shooting my wall for like 2 minutes, giving me unfair time to generate resource.

Overall, I give this game quite high score. Well done!

Super cool game ! I like the idea of building a base but in a "tetris" kind of style. Music and graphics are amazing. Are you going to work on a post jam version with the ellements you didn't had time to add ?
🎤 PlusMinus
14. Aug 2018 · 10:05 UTC
@hishicorne we'll make a fixed off-jam version later with every assets we have, but wasn't able to implement due time limit. but it's nothing gamechanging: animations and sfx. well, also I'll fix interface layout and 2 other bugs people found here.
As for production, I don't think we'll do it for now. May be later. We have our projects.

This looks very polished and it has a complementary art style. It's a pretty new and neat concept. I tried coding a small sort of Tetris last LD, but that was pretty buggy in comparison with this one. Nice work!

I dig the artstyle, although the menu screen doesn't feel like it's in the same universe.

The concept is to be explored, it's obvious you didn't have time to balance the gameplay, but it's a good try.

Great game guys, i know how hard it can be to be working on a small team with big ambitions ;)

Wow, what a wonderful game!! I really liked the music, art and mechanics like Tetris. At first, I didn't understand that it was possible to rotate the buildings in different ways and for the first time I gained 4970 points, the second time I figured out, 9429! After playing the game for a while now. I see it could use a score system, maybe based on kills and buildings lost.

It looks cool and has promise, but there are a bunch of issues that make it less than ideal:
- The rotation controls are bad. A single button to rotate or a keyboard key to rotate is what you need. Individual rotation buttons per building is silly and cumbersome.
- The help > nope button... But why?
- I assume that the shots turning in mid-flight is a bug.
- If you build stuff, you're pretty much set to not die for a while. There's little sense of urgency in progression. The balance is off but I guess that's a long term problem.
- I couldn't really tell much about the two resources the game seems to have. Resource generation is not visualised.

LOVE the art. Cleaning up the core gameplay and it could have great potential.

Really nice graphics and sound!

The gameplay is fun - it gets very exciting hoping your Blast Cannons shoot the enemies that are close so you can build something where they are etc.

It was very ambiguous why/how much of the resources I was generating, and sometimes it was unclear why I couldn't place a building in a certain spot.

The graphics are so good I would like something more zoomed in version, like your first screenshot!

Review? Nope.

Seriously though, this game suffers from a lack of information. You spend you first couple of plays learning what each building does. I'm still not entirely sure how the lab works; it mentions a farm... what farm?

The graphics are great and the sound is pretty good too. The game is fun too but help your players out.

Nothing short of a fantastic entry. I am actually intrigued by the concept. It is such a wonderful blend of puzzle and strategy that I haven't personally seen before. Top marks for innovation for sure.

The music was good, the sounds were decent and the presentation was good! The game itself has no end so with that in mind, I think the balance was about right and I got about 3700 points on my best run (third try).

It isn't always easy to know why I can't upgrade certain things in the lab, despite having the required resources. Maybe I need some other upgrades first (Seems to be the case) or the cost is different from the cost that is displayed.

I honestly think this is one of the most solid LD entries I have played (so out of about 100 LD games). It is probably my favourite puzzle game from any LD.

Well done overall. After you've filled up all the space with everything you can build, it feels like you have nothing left to do but wait until the forces overwhelm you. I also felt like walls were pricey for what benefit they gave you. Graphics were a very positive part of this; it was a nice touch to give every enemy their own unique look and animations to make it easier to tell what they were even in a crowd.

What a great game!!! Only after 30 minutes of playing, I found out there is a button to rotate the building. I love the gameplay influenced by tetris, which makes the game more attractive as well as challenging and fits the theme. Moreover, the graphic of the game is fantastic, especially the HUD. Overall, the game is addictive and very fun. Congrats! (The help button say "nope" to me => I count this as Humor ^^)

I really like the game, especially the concept! The graphics are nice, and I enjoy the sound! There are some things I wish you could add, like having a minimum ore/power generation so it doesn't become impossible to build things. And maybe make it so you can flip the buildings (mirror them)? But all and all, it's a really great game! 😃

Ill be honest, it was really fun. i have a few pet peeves but mostly because the game itself has no end which i don't really enjoy personally but i know its more of a design choice than anything else. I will say that the game stops being fun when the enemies lag so much off screen that i cant prepare for the wave to build up my defenses in time and its just pointless to continue after that.

in terms of innovation i didn't quite see anything i haven't seen before, i also felt the lack of an actual tutorial was also annoying, if there are hidden controls past the press R to rotate than i have no idea. hell i didn't even know the laboratory was for upgrading until i saw a your 'tips' which is actually just how to play the game itself? kind of a d*** move...

Now that the peeves are out of the way, i love tower defenses! and this was fun and it totally fit the theme! awesome art and the music was good to listen to also! Good job!

Awesome game! Very fun to play and quite addictive! The randomness and the tetris like style makes each run unique. Nice idea and very well executed! If you're going to continue development, consider having a more visual way of showing the buildings HP. Tetris meets tower defence - would have been a good entry for LD41 too :) The UI was a little confusing, I didn't immediately understand what the numbers meant - perhaps a short tutorial round before sending in the hordes of enemies? But maybe I'm just slow. The music and graphics are cool, nice work!

A fun tower defense game, since it is real time and you need to act fast, some hotkeys for building and rotating would have been nice. Otherwise there's not much to criticize. Pretty solid game here.

Would have liked better instructions about how the lab worked, but I loved the artwork and the difficulty and pace of the game. Having to decide how to place the pieces was also a fun addition. Not really sure what walls were doing. Besides the fact some things were not clearly explained, the game was fun and enjoyable.

Pretty good game, seems to me like you ran out of time though? There are some details that I would have changed, but I assume you just didn't get to them; The end screen is rather boring, The characters don't face the movement direction, the rocket launchers don't have explosions. The art style is very nice too :)

That happend like 3 more times. :D It's pretty fun, but also kinda frustrating since the form of the buildings is sometimes just straight up bullshit. But that's the game! And I like it! Very nicely done. I get that most games are really short, but I actually ended up playing this for a while!

This game is really good! Good music, graphics, and the concept is quite fun. Honestly I would like to know what each thing does, although I have some guesses. I don't know what the lab does, and I couldn't get enough metal. At the same time, the wall which should be really cheap is really hard to build given the cost.

But awesome game, with an upgrade system it would be a joy to play.

Great game overall, with the music being on point and some of the sound effects being very well made. The graphics were very good and the overall game design was well put together. However i did find that the destroy button didn't open for me once whilst playing, maybe i didn't last long enough. Very polished, however it is a shame that there was not a tutorial. This game fits the theme well however if you position your buildings correctly - like the comments above have, you don't seem to need to have any more space.

I love it looks, but that being said, I've always had a weakness for pixel art. The music is nice too, it's not so 'in your face' that it makes it hard to think, but it's also upbeat enough to get me pumped. Health bars on the buildings (or lack thereof) I think is the biggest issue I have with the game, as I'll sometimes lose 2-3 buildings in one moment because I had no idea they were low on health. Usually I quickly died after that.

I think a useful improvement would be a border between buildings, so it's easier to see what you've got in play, especially when you have multiple of the same building rammed together.

But overall I loved the game, even if I did really poorly at it.

Great game! Settings have music and SFX slider bars which I never remember to do in my own games, art is great, and gameplay is fun. I never was able to build the lab during my playthrough but I imagine it lets you upgrade things. I think displaying the score somewhere during the game would be really helpful so that people who are trying to get a high score know how much longer they have to hold out. Other than that minor nitpick great job! Also loved that I pushed Help and it just said 'nope'

The art is great, but I think the gameplay is lacking a bit because there isn't much to and the enemies always do the same thing (move towards you and attack). Adding buildings that slow enemies or buff/debuff buildings/enemies would add a bit of variety, but having different enemy patterns and attacks is maybe more important.

An interesting take on the tower defense genre. I liked the tetris-like mechanic and I thought you implemented it well. The graphics were nice (save for the green field in the middle of nowhere as your setting, I feel like the surface of Mars or something would have been a far better choice for the menacing mood). The music was some great stuff and for the most part I can't really add much other than work on explaining the mechanics more clearly as the 'nope' on the help button is a funny joke sure, but it still doesn't actually help a player in case they can't fully grasp everything that is happening. Good work on this!

Hey there ! Your game has definitly a lot of potential, I hope you're gonna keep working on it 'cause I'm pretty sure it can be a very solid game.
Arts and SFX/music are great, what I really liked is how you designed the interface in a clever way to make you work less (with the minerals and energy ressources directly linked to the amount needed to build up something for instance). I didn't especially feel like I was running out of space during my two playthrough, but seeing other players' screenshots, I feel like I must have been doing something wrong :P
Also, the shapes are incredibly boring, thus making the game quite fun !

So, many games in a gamejam event puts the concept of a tower defense with the main theme, because that i dont think that is really innovative. Anyway, the combo of a RTS economy and tetris worked fine here :D

Again gotta say, great game. Most fun game I've played in this dare 42!!

came back to it again tonight, because I was itching to get more of a mastery, and realized that I can use R to rotate, and Shift to build multiple buildings!!! WOAH! GAME CHANGER!!!

I can't believe i scored 16.5k last night without knowing those 2 hotkeys, but uh....... I broke the game tonight! XD I was guessing that game would crash sooner or later, because I was loading around 3 frames in 10 seconds, and unfortunately I didnt get to screenshot my final score, because it did crash. Awesome puzzle/tower-defense ! Your take on the theme might be one of my favourite concepts of the LD. Congrats for putting all that together in a mere 72 hours !

Pros :
- Strong concept, almost flawlessly executed and thematically adequate
- Nothing gives me more joy than mixel art that crisp
- Great soundtrack makes for a great "end of the world" mood
- In my opinion, balanced difficulty curve
- "Help ? Nope."

Cons :
- Some form of in-game tutorial would be very helpful

Anyway, that's an awesome entry, that could totally be polished into a releasable game.

Holy cow that was a lot of enemies! Awesome music, cool SFX and art. The game balancing was a little weak, but I feel that's the case for a lot of game jams, it's hard to get it right with such little testing. Good job on the theme, and the variety of buildings and enemies as well. Nice job!

love the art and the music was on point! it was simple yet a lot of fun! My only gripe was it's difficult to tell which building is upgraded at a glance. Also, the interface on the lab could be better explained, I have no idea what the numbers actually mean.

Definitely a dark, entertaining game. Very impressed with what you were able to accomplish in 72 hours! Those enemies are creepy! I love it.

Really great idea and fantastic execution. I would have liked a little more direction. But as you said, you ran out of time for the help stuff. Great game though!

I thought that the shape of the block is random will improve the replayability. I was bad, I could not endure a massive raid, but it was super fun. This is Masterpiece!

Really neat entry! Like this take on tower defense. The visuals were really cool, the audio was great, the randomized building shapes made it interesting, strategizing was fun. Great job!

Fun game with a neat idea. I liked how you have a whole bunch of guns, you're just killing it. Then, a big wave comes and destroys everything you worked for. Great job!

My only complaint about the game is when the music changes (or at least I think it does) it overrides the volume settings and blasts at full volume.

Nice job, good take on the theme with the randomized building shapes. The graphics are pretty solid too. This could make for an interesting mobile game. Great work!

had fun! it took me a while to get the laboratory and figure out how to upgrade things- usually by that time though I can't keep up with the number of enemies that appear on screen. wasn't sure how to destroy buildings myself if that was possible. nice job!

Awesome game ! Normally I don't even like this type of game but I loved this one. The take on the theme was very cool. This tetris-like feel combined with the stress of the enemies coming, the nice graphics and the awesome music made it a wonderful experience! Enemies also looked very cool.

I found the concept of this little strategy / puzzle game really interesting! I loved the graphic style and the visual effects! It was very smart to take the game Tetris back to make something new! However I think that with some additional feedbacks this game would be even better! Great job! :)

By the way please feel free to leave us some feedbacks on our game!

Somewhere between Frostpunk and Tetris. Great concept and fun game. Controls could be improved but it's still a good game anyway

Excellent game! Such great graphics - I loved all the art and pixel work, and great music too.
Gameplay wise also quite nice, had to really search to find that 'r' was rotate (right mouse button would have worked nicely too)

That a replay had different building shapes was a cool touch - mixes it up. (but likely harder to balance)
The only gripe I really have is that the walls are prohibitively expensive. Would have expected them to be cheapest, instead they are the most expensive per tile?

Do try and create a post-compo version, would love to see it.

Very nice game. The graphics and audio were great, and the user interface was clean and easy to use. I liked the mix-up of Tetris and tower defence, and the way the parts' shapes were procedurally generated was also really cool.

Awesome game! Overall one of the best I've played yet. :grinning:

Art is superb, lots of different assets, well animated and all consistent in style, awesome!

Audio incredible, fits well and builds a great atmosphere.

Gameplay fun and interesting with a nice difficulty curve to keep you going back. My one gripe was being unable to place buildings over enemies as once a lot of enemies were in your base, there was very little you could do to counter them.

Theme is clearly great here as I was indeed constantly running out of space! Who would've thought!

Awesome game! Like tetris combined with a tower defense. I got 1304 my 2nd try once I figured things out, the music and sound effects got a little repetitive but the graphics were awesome. I would suggest being able to select from a few different grid sizes, and maybe a mode that changes up the piece shapes every time you place one instead of every game. I definitely had a couple lucky pieces my 2nd game, and if I played it right could have fit rockets and blasters on every square. Or maybe I'm crazy and they never changed between my 2 games, but that'd be cool either way. Pausing was a little broken, could destroy pieces and pause between placing to give myself more time to think, I bet learning to take advantage of that could make the game a bit less challenging. Overall, super well done! Excited to see if you do something with it Post-mortem
