Ludums Kitchen by tommohawkaction

[raw]
made by tommohawkaction for LD 41 (JAM)

"Ludum's Kitchen" is a game about Chef Ludum and his adventures into the depths below his small restaurant in a secluded forest in order for him to find the best ingredients to create the greatest dishes in the kingdom to serve to his customers, the twist is that the ingredients don't really want to be made into food and will try to escape as you are hunting them. You will have to be quick to grab them before they escape so you do not waste any time and are able to get back to your kitchen in order to prepare and server your dished to your customers, the orders will appear on the banners in your kitchen showing you the ingredients you need the create the dish. Be fast and efficient in your quest to create the best food in all the kingdom and above all else don't let Chef Ludum down.

This game was made in 24 hours by a small team of 4 people working from dusk till dawn to produce something for Ludum dare, this is our first submission for Ludum dare and our first game jam working as a team. The theme was a tough one but we made something we are happy with and has an interesting twist to it. The combination of a cooking game with hunter gather type game play was something we were unsure if it would work when we first went into this, however i can say that we worked hard and should all be proud of what we accomplished within the time limit we set ourselves.

So I'm not really sure what to do... got the meat when the meat guy came up but not sure where to put it, it doesn't seem to want to interact with anything. Also took me a minute to jump back up to the top when I fell to the bottom :P
If you want to check out ours too would appreciate it :)

This was really really good. Took me a second to figure out where it showed the ingredients I needed but as soon as I had that, it was good fun! Really good job guys!

The game is excellent. The music is just really repetitive and the platforms are hardcore sometimes haha. Letting the player use a controller would be nice. But your concept is really good and that could make a sellable mobile game for sure, you should keep upgrading it!

Awesome graphics! Despite is a bit hard to control it (maybe ASWD + keys to jump/attack or ASWD + mouse to jump/attack would be better), the atmosphere of this game is great. Congratulations of your game!!

Fun game, was a bit hard, perhaps could have given the player more time for each meal you finish. Anyway, very unique combinations of genres, never heard of a kitchen/gatherer before... probably because of a good reason ;-)

Great idea! The art and sound are great in this. I like the chop animation.
Some constructive criticism:
- the fact that you had to double-jump almost every time was a bit annoying
- I would've made the kingdom a bit smaller, is a bit of a mission to go all the way down and up every time

The pixel art is really beautiful and the gameplay feels great ! The music part feel weird for the universe you created though. Nice game overall !

Very beautifull game! You guys did a really good job in the art of the game. The game also seems very polished too.

My criticisms are that after some time the game is a little bit repetitive, and I don't think the music fits with the art in general.

Please, take a look at my game too: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/confessional

Good job! I love the art and audio! The theme fits very well, and the game is genuinely fun. I do wish that you added more time so that you had time to go down and get three pieces of meat for a single order (or allowed you to carry multiple things, that would work.

The game looks great! The character, environments look super solid. Makes the whole experience much more pleasant. I gotta say the animations are also really cool. I like the dynamic attack animation, and also shaking screen! It's cool that whole game is based around 3 seperate environments, vertically and the lower you get the creepier it becomes with dungeons in basement.
Good job guys ;) !!

Really enjoyed the game, the character art and animations were cool, really liked the background pixel art and the customers. Would have enjoyed some more sound effect variation and maybe a sprint option for running down your ingredients. More cooking steps would have been cool.

First of all let me say that I really like the idea of the game and that I had quite a lot of fun with the execution of it (even more impressive considering you did it in 24h). Remember this, when you read the following list of things I did not like ;)

- there is no hint anywhere that you can double jump! this is vital!
- there is now way to exit out of the game
- I had to manually tab out of the game to disable the music for it in Windows, because the background music, to me, was very annoying after 1 minute (sorry)
- have some indicator of which ingredients the player needs to collect apart from the ones in the kitchen. Running all the way down just to have forgotten something is demotivating.
- there are too many tiny platforms for my liking that are also too close together. Try and make things more open, give the player more space to play with the (excellent) jump and double jump. Btw, make platforms that are reachable with a single jump - I don't think there's a single one, making the single jump useless!
- sometimes the background and the foreground are not differentiable, meaning more than once I ran into some wall that I thought was part of the background

Again, please don't take these points the wrong way. Your game IS impressive for 24hs of work and fun to play.

Cheers.

@chriiis88 Thanks. I totally agree with you. If more people wanted us to carry on with this game then those ideas you've pointed out will be essential things to fix. Thanks again :)

I'm glad, I watched the tutorial first. Fun game, once you get the hang of it - I like the genre combo and the graphics especially. My only point of critique is the audio - the sfx are a bit unbalanced/jarring, but that is really minor. Good job!
