Crumpets and Cannons by Temmy
And I'm done! Though it's more of just a small idea than a game!

Had a fantastic LD weekend. Even though I wish I'd put many many more levels into the game, this was all about learning some new tools and wanting to explore an aesthetic in a neatly wrapped up way.
Back in LD 36 I put together a little game about an overly eccentric and coal-obsessed Isambard Kingdom Brunel surviving space in his steam powered spaceship. Well, this time he's BACK along with his steam-powered robotic manservant Jeeves to lay claim to as many (well ok, I only had time to make one) planets in the name of the The Great British Empire.
For the Queen. Huzzah!
This game was made using GameMaker Studio 2 (my first real go at it), Photoshop, and a lot of coffee.
Goal: Defend the rising flag on the small world by blowing up the aliens
Controls: Just use your mouse. Simple! Dragging under the cannon will rotate it. Hold the left mouse button down and release to fire.

I love the idea of having an intro for that kind of game!
It adds more depth to the universe!
However that would have been better with sound & music (I didn't have any sound on my computer, is this a bug or maybe a lack of time ?)^^ also when we loose we have to go over the intro again, in my opinion It's better to loose & restart over right away!
Ps : I like the minimalist game boy aesthetic of your game :)
Glad you liked the intro and you felt there was some depth to the universe. That's was definitely a part of what I was hoping to achieve.
In my opinion it would help the game a lot if you just skipped the intro (and especially the pre-game explanations) after death, it sort of takes away the motivation to try again.
Gameplay wise, I found the action to be a little too short and at the same time not quite tight enough. Since you apparently can't shoot down the enemy shots, your success depends largely on how well you hit the aliens and I found that to be a bit twiddly. Still managed to barely finish the game on the second try.
One minor bug: If you rotate the cannon to the far left, it will shoot to the right (while still pointing left).
Totally agree about the flow, and yeah, that bug is annoying. By the end I had something of an idea as to how to fix it (or at least, better understood what the problem was) but again my energy tanks were running on empty by then. Perhaps I'll put up a post-jam version with a few fixes sometime. :)
i miss the music and sfx a lot ;_; (maybe some very british 8bit theme)
A little meter to show the charge value of the cannon would be a great addition.
Altogether I think this delivered a solid Ludum Dare experience. ( ̄ω ̄)
The cutscenes were funny, but i couldn't skip them after i died.
Good and solid game, nice.
I enjoyed it, but the game is really too short :(
Aniway, nice entry!
