Super soul wipeout by Korteh

[raw]
made by Korteh for LD 44 (JAM)

34534534.png The old forest was corrupted by an evil aura concentrated on a forgotten graveyard. Anyone who dares to enter it gets lost and gradually loses their soul. A brave warrior was sent by the king to purge the filth of that forest. In order to navigate in the damned darkness of the forest, he was equipped with a holy lantern that is able to incinerate the evil in its fire and pick up the remnants of it to cure the lantern’s owner.

Features - You soul constantly draining - Arcade top-down shooter gameplay - Upgrades that cost just a tiny shard of your soul

Love the graphics, but there is at least one game breaking bug. The player's z position doesn't change, he is always hovering above the walls and levels, so he can't kill anyone, but he can just walk out of the map. So the game is unplayable at least for me now.
Edit: restarting the game fixed it
Edit2: i found the problem, there is no gravity, and in the spawn area there is a slope that you can go up. Once your up you can't go down.

@wie we didn't catch duch bugs before, can you tell how it happened?

At this point the game isn't really a challenge. The enemies drop so much souls that you can just continuosly fire, and easily dodge the enemies, and collect the souls. Maybe if the attacks had cooldown, and you could choose from a variety if attacks, it would be more fun?

Wow ! I have to say it looks awesome (this low poly/res reminds me of Warcraft 3) and also sounds really good. The style is coherent too, although maybe the environments are a bit repetitive after a while.
I would also say that it plays very well and I had fun playing it.

That would be best though if you could fix two bugs :
- base projectile (small fireball) does not shoot when running in the opposite direction of the shot (seems to collide with the lantern ??) which is a very common move in topdown shooter
- I lost because at some point a skeleton got close enough to me to be stuck between me and my lantern, thus preventing me from shooting him
Without these, I'll be happy to try and finish the game again :D

@bouergh thank you for feed back!
Bugs with a lantern is an oversight, the lantern should not have collisions at all

This was a really well made game. graphics were great, the audio was awesome, and the game play was fun to play. I was having trouble exiting the game. I'm not sure if I wasn't pressing the right button or if there was a button for that option. I managed to exit out of the game because of my dual monitor set up. Definitely did a good job with this game!

Nice one!
Graphics looks great, controls feel fluid and this spooky drum&bass fits perfectly with the game.
Maybe it would be nice to know what the upgrades do before we get them.

I enjoyed playing your game. Congrats

really nice game, the immersion of it drops when the player no longer isGrounded, as @wie said
Still, more than I got accomplished though, great job!

Hey!
I just wanted to stream and playtest the game. Unfortunately it eats 100% of my GTX980M GPU, so i couldn't play on stream o_O

I really love this! Graphics and audio are especially good, and thank you for putting a spreadshot gun in :). My only complaints are that it is faster to run diagonally, and sometimes the trees obscured characters, but those are minor.

That was hella fun. Major complaints are as follows:
I think you could should your own lantern in some instances but I couldn't reliably reproduce.
I didn't know what the power ups did. (some text under them would help)
Instances of flicker (overlapping?) textures on foliage and some floor locations.

Outside of those three issues, this was great. I actually sent this to another dev just so he could listen to the music, with the gameplay as a bonus. Thanks for the experience.

@nerzal well, this is quite strtange, i developed this game on GTX 960M and it outputs around 130 fps eating 60-70% of gpu power, the game doesn't have Vsynk and pusheas as many fps as it can. I assume what If you run screen capture it should just lower fps of the game, if i understand it right. Right now i dont have such programs to test it out.

This is highly playable entry. Looks great and the audio helps to set correct retro atmosphere as well.

Just not rarely I encounter uncollectable souls. Bad in time when I was in a need of it and when gameplay switched from crazy shooter to carefully sneaking around and counting every shot fired. And when I cannot pick up a third one, I feel it is not fair and I blame it for my very end - I would probably die in next first or second room anyway, but you probably got my frustration.

Fun game! Gets a little repetetive and needs a mute button. But I couldn't stop nonetheless so Chuck had to wait!

Totally loved it! So many levels! I really wanted to get to the end, so I played and replayed it and felt I was getting better every time. A small thing, the lantern blocked my shots half of the time, I think when I walked opposite of what I was shooting at. Shooting and walking in the same direction circumvented that problem. Once my guy was suddenly floating above everything, but I managed to get him back on the ground. This is an issue we also had in our game.

Great game! For me one of the best I've played so far!

A really nice game!

It has music, it has 3D, it has sound effects, it has upgrades, it has everything! The only disappointment for me was that triple shot upgrade replaced the piercing upgrade, i was really looking forward to triple piercing action :)

Also in my opinion the camera was bit far away. It might be that this decision was to hide the "lame" 3D graphics but man, the graphics were great! I'd love to play a more polished version with something like a zoom option on a scrollwheel.

And one more thing, clamp the input vector to 1.0 magnitude so that the character won't run faster in diagonal direction :)

Stylish! I like it. I've seen a few games now use the whole 'one resource' conept (for ammo, life, currency, and time) and it works quite well. Graphics were kinda buggy (texture misalignments and z-fighting) but still had great visual appeal, and with the music, etc. made for a fun feel. Good stuff.

So far the game I've played the most this jam. Loved the way you guys included the theme too and at first didn't even noticed so I died xP

Nonetheless the music loop felt a bit too short and diagonal movement was faster than normal so normal movement felt a bit slow for me, I'm pretty sure you can fix that easily. Good job!
