LD44: Minter by LMB

[raw]
made by LMB for LD 44 (COMPO)

You have been working on the mint for decades. You love this place. You love this job.

You are the minter.

Your life is currency!

Instructions

Your goal is to keep the mint working, keep the money flowing, keep your job. The mint will make coins automatically as long as the machines are in good shape: raw metal is delivered in one side, coins leave on the other.

Keep an eye on the "coins per minute" indicator. If it falls to zero, it is game over for you!

Control the minter (your character, the green thing on the screen) with the arrow keys or WASD. Execute actions with Control, Enter or the space bar (they are all the same; this game uses a single "action" command).

Machines: Machines decay naturally as the time passes and sometimes they just break. You can fix them using tools. The worse the machine state, the slower it will send the mintage to the next stage in the production pipeline.

Tools: You fix machines using tools. You start with a wrench, which never breaks but is not really a good tool. You can buy other tools which are faster to fix things up but have a chance of breaking upon use. Buying a tool will reduce your "coins per minute" for some time. You can get your tools at your office.

Visitors: The mint has a nice museum by the reception area. Visitors are blue and are welcome. Too bad, sometimes visitors get curious and decide to wander through the forbidden areas of the mint. Don't let them do that! These areas are dangerous, and an injured visitor will cost you some "coins per minute" as restitution. And let's not even think about how much would cost of a visitor lost his life in a mint accident!

Thieves: Since Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) aired, the number of red-clothed people trying to steal money from mints has skyrocketed. Expect some of them.

Weapons: They work are just like tools, but can be used to kill thieves and to convince rogue visitors to go back home. Avoid hitting visitors too hard, you don't want them dead!

Technical detals

  • Engine: Godot 3.1.1.
  • Graphics: Krita.
  • Font: Lato, by Łukasz Dziedzic.
  • Audio: Some effects recorded by myself, some generated by jfxr, edited with Audacity.
  • Music: A Kazoo reinterpretation of a Pink Floyd classic, which I called Short of Money. Despite all my musical talent, I must admit I still prefer the original version.

Known bugs

  • The title screen says "May 2019", but the game was evidently made in April!
  • There is no way to turn the music off.

You really need instructions. Have no idea how to play :D

331 points on my first try. I will revisit this game in the next few days, cause of the upcoming infos. Not sure if I get everything. Anyway. I like the idea, biggest concern would be that I never could hit an enemy with the knife, cause they where to fast. All the machines are crashing relativly fast, which is nervewrecking xD

Well done so far! Will revisit.

@saladon @koemeterion Thanks for playing! I didn't expect any one actually finding the game before I had the instructions in place! Anyway, I just improved the game description, including instructions.

Took me a while to get the hang of it but it's a cool game! I found it a bit hard? Maybe I just suck at it? Or maybe you were actually going for that ahah, either way, it gave it that feeling of stress that I felt was somewhat essential! Good job overall :)

A little challenging to get the hang of as right off the bat there is a lot going on! I like the concept though. I think the player controls may be a little too twitchy, as I found myself getting snagged on walls and corners more than I'd like to, especially when tracking down guests. Good job overall!

Haha, good fun and I'll never listen to Pink Floyd in the same way again!

Found it a bit tricky to get through the doorways at times. The icons at bottom right and the player could do with being more visible somehow IMHO but they're minor criticisms. Good work!

Every time I tried to fix something I'd only net a +5% efficiency because I'd lose 5% while the animation was finishing! Really tough but haven't seen anything else like it in the compo so far so kudos

@cheesepencil You can buy better tools in the office! Though they can break, they are much faster at fixing machinery. Thanks for playing!

Really difficult, but a pretty cool concept. I also agree that the items in the bottom left need to become more visible. Great job though!

Pretty fun multitasking game. Nothing is ever completely fixed, so you are constantly rushing around to attend to this and that. It creates an engrossing sense of urgency, but it becomes repetitive after a short while. The music is quite something, too. My final score was 1164.

@charlesschar Thanks for playing and for the comments. I guess you hold the current non-developer World Record! :medal:

A bit hard to get started. More interested once you get the hang of it. You really need to learn to lock your safes so lost museum visitors can't just barge in.

Really liked the music, and the game is as hard as it is fun! Great job ^^

Instructions, brave music choice (Turned it off myself) (Was on HTML So it lagged a bit) would dramatically improve this game. But in terms of design, make the character stand out more (I thought the player icon was an upgrade) and make it a bit clearer whats going on. Overall, lots of improvement on a good concept. Keep at it
