Blood Coins by TheItCrOw
This is our submission for our first Ludum Dare Event #44: Blood Coins
We hope that you enjoy playing the game. We would highly appreciate your feedback!
Note: We did everything from scratch. There were no pre-made assets used.
PS: MULTIPLE PLAYTHROUGHS POSSIBLE :)
Some Context (Spoiler Alert!): The world faces Judgement Day. God and Satan are sending their legions over mankind to bring absolut destrucion. In the midst of this battle, you find yourself looking for a place to die. Resigned and disheartened, you wish to send one last prayer to receive closure.
As the universe will have it you are able to attain divine powers that enable you to fight against the apocalyptic armies. However, those powers take their toll on you, drain your life force and turn it into profit for the supreme deity everything returns to because after all: your life is just a currency. This is displayed in the game by transforming your lost HP into coins that appear in the UI hourglass at the bottom left of the screen. You lose HP by either getting hit by an enemy or by simply being in the afore described divine form you received upon praying at the altar.
You have to decide which side you want to fight for and give your life in exchange. You may also beat the game by choosing neither of the two forces and instead remain a human being. Choose your own path. (This game can be played multiple times with different endings) You shouldnt miss out on the epic boss fights ;)

Controls:
A , D -> walk
Shift -> fast walking
W , S -> Flying
Left Mouse Button -> Attack
F -> Interact
<--------------------------------------------------------------->
EDIT: Version 1.1 out NOW! with many bugs fixed listed here:
-> The respawn now works. You can play the game multiple times until you find the ending that suits you best!
-> The dialogs are now way faster and less annoying to deal with. No more waiting for the text to slowly appear one by one.
-> The flying was a huge problem for most of you, and we, me and @marius-boenisch werent satisfied with that either. It wasnt supposed to be that way. But the stress at the end took its toll. However, now with V 1.1 flying feels way more intuitive and easier. You also dont fly with space anymore, but W for upwards and S for downwards. Check it out, there are some awesome boss fight at the end ;)
-> You can finally skip the annoying cutscene at the beginning if you want to play over and over again!
-> More good news considering combat and controls: The player now attacks in the direction the mouse cursor is facing. That also was something many people disliked and we agree, it was not optimal.
<--------------------------------------------------------------->
We hope you like the new Version and give us, again, a lot of feedback. This is only possible thanks to you guys :)

Thanks for the information again!
Look forward to seeing the game :~)
I cant download it.
I will play it if you reply after fixing this.
@joe-the-really-old
Just found out about the "@" mechanic. So in case you guys havent tried the game yet, everything works now hopefully :)
Nice artwork and flying feels awesome :grin:. I recommend adding keybindings and a screenshot to the description!
Nice work !
The first altar? Did you try to restart it? What OS are you using?
Edit: Nvm. I see it, After respawning, the first altar is broken. What a bummer. If you desire to play it again, you have to restart the game, which is technically nothing different, then reaspwning, but never the less annoying. I´m sorry for the bug.
I draw a lot myself, so I know how long it usually takes to do 2D stuff.
From what I've seen of the narrative, with the god thing using you to collect life force, that seems cool too.
My biggest complaint though is how hard the game is to control. You fly upwards way too fast when you fly, and the attack range is short, so it's really hard to hit enemies. It makes it extremely difficult to play.
If you were to release a post-jam version with fine-tuned controls, I would be excited to finish the game to get the endings. Because I do want to see what happens, but the controls are preventing me :3
The trick is to not keep pressing the space bar, instead, see every "spacebar-press" as a beat of wings, that is giving you an upwards force. Maybe then, you can go through the game! We even got positive response about the flying. But never the less, I can see your point. Thanks for checking it out :)
I died really often because I my character was the other way around than the enemy; it was really rocky to control at first but you could get used to it.
All in all: I am facinated by the idea, love the artwork you put in and see really potencial in it.
Yes, I knew that the reloading and cutscenes would be a thing, but we had no time left and were totally finished the moment we submitted.
Your character being the wrong direction is a bug, that should have not occured and I never experienced. Sadly, otherwise I could have fixed it.
But, it´s Ludum Dare. Wouldnt be fun without bugs right? :)
Thanks for the feedback and I´m glad that you enjoyed it...well at least overall.
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
"Maby make it a wed gl easyer acsess for some"
I didnt quite unterstand that part, sorry.
Yes, the unskippable texts and cutscenes are indeed a problem many have already mentioned. That was due to lack of time...and tbh motivation at the end :D glad u enjoyed it :)
I also like that you've added branching paths and even a human only path.
Overall, I really like it and you should work further to improve it.
Yes the flying and the controls are wacky. I want to release a 1.1 Version, where I fix a few bugs - which includes the flying and some other stuff, casue that was not meant to be this way.
The branching paths are also a big reason for the unpolished state the game is in, which, again, includes the combat/flying mechanics. But we wanted that option.
Thanks for checking it out and I am glad u overall enjoyed it :)
Yes I will release a 1.1 version of the game where I fixed some bugs, including the flying, cause that was indeed not wanted. I will inform you, when the release is done, if u want to check it out again then :)
Special thanks to @littlew00d @fahim-faysal @rhiannon @kungkras @roilbauk and @lamossus for pointing out crucial bugs :)
After 5th try I only PRAY to skipping intro :)
