Consume is a tile based strategy game where an adventurous mage delves deep to uncover the truth about a strange dream that called them to a mysterious dungeon far away in an forgotten land.

Bindings and Movement

[Mouse]

Use the mouse to navigate the tiles adjacent to the player. You can move up, down, left, or right, but not diagonal. *Note that when you move, the adjacent tile you're moving away from will move with you.

[Tab]

Use [Tab] if you get stuck, it will kill the player and return you to the shop keeper.

[F1]

Lowers the resolution of the game for smaller screens

[F2]

Brings the resolution back to normal.

Tiles

[Multiplier wand]

Multiplies the power of all tiles adjacent by the wand's power. Can multiply anything including additional wands.

[Potions]

Heals the player for it's power.

[Scrolls]

Gives the player a random spell with the scrolls power as a modifier.

[Monsters]

Various monsters roam the dungeons 15 floors. On every floor, on monster holds the key to the stair case that will allow you to progress.

[Stair Case]

Stepping on this tile with the key will allow you to progress to the next floor.

Combo System

If you manage to kill more than one creature in a row, you'll be awarded with a combo! Each time you receive a combo you'll gain a souls multiplier and health based bonus based on the number of combos you've chained.

Gameplay

In Consume, you move around the board by clicking on adjacent tiles with your mouse. If you enter a tile occupied by an enemy, you will need to trade your own life force to absorb their soul. Souls are used as currency to be exchanged for permanent upgrades from the shopkeeper, he is found when you meet your inevitable demise. Spell scrolls can also be found scattered throughout the dungeon floors (spells do not consume life force to cast). Other items that can be found inside the dungeon are health potions and multiplier wands (this item multiplies number values of both health potions and enemies in adjacent tiles, so use wisely). Consume also uses a combo system, absorb multiple enemies in a row to reduce the amount of life force used and recieve additional souls to exchange for permanent upgrades.

Super well-done. Audio and art are great, aspect of trying to get the highest combo is also great. I didn't see where the theme was coming into play, in that health and souls are a separate thing, but otherwise its super good!

That was awesome! The level of polish in the art and UI was insane. The music was solid. I loved the pseudo-rougelike/puzzle style enemy movement. The fact that there's progression on top is just icing on the cake. This is a great game, let alone dare entry

This is actually super good. I could see myself playing this even if it wasn't Ludum Dare.

The mechanics are cool, but take a while to figure out alone, a tutorial would be great!
Otherwise, great game, didn't feel the time passing by while playing it, but a damage multiplier as an end of run reward would have been great as wellto push the grinding further.

Very well done game! I enjoyed a lot the tactical side of it, tho the player can get stuck if you move the stairs to a dead end with no way that I could tell to reset the level.

Easily my favorite entry so far. Very awesome work. Wish I could move the wizard around with WASD and activate spells with 1-4, but everything else is perfect.

Thank you everyone for the fantastic comments! We've been playing a ton of entries as well and this Ludum Dare has been my favorite so far. Ghost and I are super proud of our work on this title. You guys are awesome!!! :)

What an immense amount of polish. Your scope is absolutely perfect, and the game is really fun! Also would be nice to move with WASD or arrow keys instead of clicking.

Wow, just got stucked playing/tryharding your game for about an hour. Difficulty curve is well done, the mood is super cool. There should be a visual feedback though, whenever you got the room's key, I sometimes wasn't sure whether or not I got it. Had fun optimizing my paths, best entry for me so far !

By far the most fun gameplay of all the entries I've played. Excited to see where you go with this, I can see it being a real hit!

That first song isn't really great but the second one feels really fitting! Game play is solid and the style is for the most part coherent (though I'd prefer everything be either black or white rather than have color), but I don't really feel as if I have any control over how well I do and that death is almost a requirement to win this. Wish there was a way to make it more skill based if that makes sense

The best entry I played so far! Great music, nice visuals, interesting idea. The only flaw is that the game is a bit too easy once you figure it out. Other than that the game is amazing! Do you plan on doing a post-jam version?

@dreadusa the skill actually matters a lot. You don't even need upgrades that much. What you need to do is to use wands on wands. Then you can get some crazy value from items. My record was a 128 potion. Another useful thing to know is that blood pacts work on blood pacts, so if you manage to get blood pact of 30 or more it might be a good idea to wait until you have at least one more blood pact in hand

@lamossus Thanks for playing and enjoying the game! Yes I do plan on doing a post jam version with a few more items and monsters.

The tile mechanic is very innovative, when I moved the exit with me it almost feels like BABA is you in that you can sort of change the rules of the game itself (because most game will only fixed exits but this game you can actually move the exit).
