A roguelite platformer where the only currency is deadly, radioactive uranium. This game is hard.

ss.png

Collect radioactive material and exchange it for a brand new genome. Run faster, jump farther, teleport through walls -- if you don't succumb to radiation poisoning first.

The game includes a crappy built-in tutorial, but here are some directions: * Left/right arrow to move, Z to jump, X to use special abilities. * Hold Shift to see names and descriptions of all of your genes. * The more uranium you carry, the more genes you have, and the higher up you go, the faster you'll lose genes. * Time is paused when you're in a checkpoint/shop area. Use them to take a breather. * There are 12 different genes to find. Catch 'em all!

This was an exciting one, despite the theme! The more I stared at it, the more I became convinced that it's basically a subset of the last theme. I ended up looking to the other final-round themes for inspiration, but still found a way to incorporate "your life is currency"... at least I think I did. I suppose you'll be the judge. I was determined to make a more actiony game since my last three have been word-based, but it meant straying way outside my artistic comfort zone. The art took a ton of time. I don't even remember writing the music. The code was no walk in the park either... it really came down to the wire! I went 30+ hours without sleep at the end, and it was worth it. I learned new stuff and made a genre of game I've never made before.

Done in Unity/C#. Also used Photoshop, Illustrator, FL Studio, and Audacity. Font is Umba Soft by Anita Jürgeleit.

KNOWN ISSUES * It's definitely possible to become unable to progress due to lack of genes or misaligned map chunks. I can try to fix it if you post a screenshot. * The balance is pretty poor, in general. If you play enough of it to get a sense of the pacing, let me know of any changes you think should be made. * There's not that much level variety. Feel free to fork it on Github and add some! * I haven't tested the Mac or Linux builds at all. I'm sure there will be problems...

Excellent graphics and nicely polished presentation. I found the platforming physics to be a bit too floaty for my taste, but fun none-the-less. My main criticism would be that it doesn't really relate to the theme. Definitely a good job though!

Overall, I agree with Seb, though I did find the framerate to be a touch bad (though that could just be my computer). I like the concept

Nice art and vibrating music. The control of the game was a bit awkward, but I think the genes were suppossed to make that beter, although it-s hard to get different upgrades and not losing them. The game is not very original but it is extremely well implemented, specially for a compo. Good job!

Quick note, before I actually play the game properly: X and Z as keys works really badly for people with a QWERTZ keyboard layout.

@zarkonnen Ah, that's good to know. I'll keep it in mind for future games; you realistically only need the Z key in this one, as the special abilities are pretty rare.

Uploaded a new version that's hopefully a little more balanced.

Idea is really interesting!
However, it's too hard to control, like that you will slide for a short distance after landing, those factors makes the gameplay really uncomfortable. Wish there will be more improvements!

I'm confused. I really didn't like the gameplay, I found the controls to be really clunky and thought the game was almost unplayable. But everything else works so well, the graphics and the music work well, the mechanics are very original, and everything apart from gameplay itself feels very smooth and polished. I can't and don't want to play it, but still consider this to be one of the best compo submission I've seen so far this LD.

Nice game just that I didn't realize that there is different patterns, and I sort of get stuck for several try on the 3th jump. Until I restart the game and could go further.

Nice idea, graphics and audio. However, platforming didn't feel so good because of the controls.

@enigma @kuro @mekyi Thanks for the feedback. I just put up a third version with tweaked physics and some balance improvements... but it's not likely to change your minds about how the controls feel. I modeled the platforming a little bit after the game "N," which is floaty, has a character that's hard to steer in midair, and is quite difficult. It seems like my inexperience at making platformers meant that I didn't do a great job. The only person available for hands-on testing was me, and by some fluke, I'm pretty good at the game. :)

I like it's graphics and music. It's a good game. But inertia makes control difficult.

I got blocked easely during the run due to map generation and the controls felt a bit slow for a platformer, but the music fit the game and the "nuclear" design is on point, maybe a bit too distant from the theme. Overall good job !

Good job. Neat graphics(a bit over simplistic). It's very very hard.. or I'm bad at platformers :D. Great job overall!

Nice game and solid entry. Too difficult and too many restarts for me :)

Really nice game, superpolished. All the aspects are there. It is a bit too difficult though, and more importantly, the controls a bit wonkey (especially jumping) which take away a bit from the fun.
