Robots in Hell by Andreadbx

[raw]
made by Andreadbx for LD 44 (JAM)

Hi, i’m Andrea Di Bartolo, 3d Artist currently working for Shoppe Keep 2, fourth Ludum Dare that i do alone, as a 3D Art guy with very little experience in coding, this time i tried to step up a bit and do a game with more mechanics, albeit simple ones: a Tower Defense!

Ld441.png Robots in Hell is a Tower Defense game where you have to defend your infernal palace from hordes of evil robots that are invading your sanctum! build towers and cast spells to dispose of them, but be ware, there is no money in this game, everything is paid with your life force!

Features:

-3 types of enemies

-3 types of turrets

-2 spells

-5 levels

Controls:

Standard tower defense controls, click on the ui buttons to select a tower to build, click in a free spot to build it! right click and drag to rotate the camera.

A really well made game, the art is nice and it's pretty well polished in general. A minor thing is you should maybe be able to click on the tower images instead of just the price. Slightly slow-paced but a great game!

Very nice sound design, its relaxing which is how tower def games should be. I wish the theme was more actively used insted of just a substitution for gold but this years theme was very bad(IMO) so i get the easy way out.
The visuals of these game is very strong but the UI could use some more work, it needs to be more intuitiv(make the whole image a button) its confusing to have the label on the side be the way you purchase your towers.
There is also a element of balance that i found lacking, in a tower defense i need a reason to use the other towers, atlest give the player the option to spawn the next wave so i can make it harder/quicker.
All in all you got a good foundation of a tower defense game  ![DERP.PNG](///raw/e62/91/z/224a5.png)

@rustycrow yeh, about the balancing i'm really aware, i underestimated a bit the challenge of balancing a game like this, so i ended up having to playtest and balance just in this last day, when i was already a lot tired, however yeh, i'm doing an update and i'll proably make the whole image clickable if i can manage to pull it off, thank you for your feedback!

Totally agree with people above, the game really needs to be faster, but despite it (and too loud and monotonous sound effects), it's a really good one.

A very pleasant game to look at, though not very challenging. Still, nicely done, since, as you said you're an artist, and not a coder. 5/5 for graphics!

I enjoyed this a lot! i played many tower defence games and this one feels and plays smooth and rewarding.

I missed and upgrade system and a way to sell towers. But then again, this is just a Jam version, i hope you finish this game, i would love to play a full version of this!

Really good! Just wish you'd used a different font and been a bit more clear about what constitutes the life force. Both Terabyte04 and I thought the things on the side were the life force for a while.

Good job!
Relaxing, it was a pleasure to see you on Twitch
You need to improve balancing
It's really a good start for a tower defense game :)

Very nice take on the tower defence genre, great visuals. Alas too easy, but that is understandable as its hard to balance a game like this in a compo..nicely done!

i liked the art and the game play. sounds are also cool. i didn't liked one thing that as i was going to higher levels i was feeling that game is becoming more easy. Game is not balanced other than that it is very interesting. :)

It's a really good idea which not only fit the theme but also shows the tower defence genre from a different angle. Also, I like the fact that you did the game in 3D and make pretty good visuals.

Nicely polished!
Minor comments for improvements:
* Would be nice to vary the sound effects (tweak pitch each time one is played)
* Would be nice to see the area off effect of the weapons when placing them
* Could use some background music

Over all, very polished and easy to play and understand -- it was immediately fun, great job!

Really efficient and good looking game! Moreover as it's been done alone. Pretty impressive. As it's been said, it's a bit easy, but that makes the game really pleasant to play, watching all those minions going to a bullet hell is really enjoyable ;p

Went up to level 5, good job!

@moldymagnet thanks a lot for the advice, the changing pitch it's something that i never tought, really nice idea! background music would need an actual audio guy, i'll see when i get one haha, for the area of effect yeh, i already have it in my project, just i'll wait to publish changes to make people play the jam results!

@ekilibr actually they are already in hell, so when they die i think they go to... don't know, Double Hell? :P

It's amazing that you did all this by yourself, I love TD games and now I'm inspired to so one in a LD :stuck_out_tongue:
I would suggest an infinite level... there should always be an infinite level haha. Also I would go for a faster pace, since there are no upgrades only turrets, all that time is not needed and I want to see action!
Good Job, very well done, Impressive that you did it all alone.

Nice game, I particularly liked the spawn/die particle effect. UI could be better looking but it's understandable for a gamejam.

@kostasvs thanks, actually the spawn/die is not a particle effect but a simple shader done with shader graph :D

Nice game, i like it: but i met a bug where the weapons stopped shooting at the enemies and i died(don't know if it's intentional, maybe a debuff i didn't notice?).
Other than that maybe a range indicator would help and also a remove tower option would have been useful. Bel gioco però  ![BUG.png](///raw/8d2/91/z/247ed.png) here they stopped attacking i don't know why

Very nice game, bro
There are some Ideas you should consider if you want to update it:
- Create an area aroud the tile you are placing a structure to tell the player how far it can reach
- Balance the game, it's way to easy
- Fire fountains are WAY too strong for their price (They are even stronger than the demon turret)
- Crossbows seems pretty useless...
- Try creating different roles for each turret, so you know they have a trade-off and a reason to use multiple types.

But the game is very well done, the graphics are incredible.

As I you told me, you did it all alone, and that is a really good thing, you pulled off a good game with graphics and a decent playthrough, if you change those things I said, it would be a great game to keep updating (Maybe for mobile)
