Nine Lives by Evan M

[raw]
made by Evan M for LD 44 (JAM)

This is a difficult platformer where when you die, you produce a halo above your head that can that be jumped on. You have to navigate many difficult skill and puzzle levels. There are many power-ups (extra lives, buttons, gravity manipulators, checkpoints, lazers, ect.) and 4 worlds; grass, desert, winter, and space.

Controls

WASD to move or arrow keys. Left click to die which will spawn a halo if you have enough lives. Right click to restart. H for a hint.

Fun game and an interesting take on the theme. Cat likes to get caught on corners though.

It's a really fun game. It gets a little hard, but it feels good when you complete a level.
Loved the cat. So cute! The map needs a little more work, tho.
The edges feels slipery at first, but I got used to it.
The beat is nice to hear.

THIS WAS WAY TOO HARD. I got frusterated pretty early in the beginning, I would have liked to see more levels though.

Great puzzles and great mechanic! A bit more fluid animation and background elements would have helped a lot~

Halo mechanic is really cool; however, I didn't understand how it's supposed to get me across that giant gap that comes up soon. The edges are super slippery. One thing that upset me was, pressing esc didn't pop up a menu or anythingc I had to open Task Manager to close the game. OVerall it felt polished and had me giggling from the cat and the music.

@hybridkin Im assuming you're talking about level 3. Did u press H for a hint? The solution is to place a Halo a little bit off the ledge and jump back to get the extra heart so you already have a head start. I know that level is really hard tho. Also do you mean the edges are slippery because you slip off them or you can kind of climb up them. Thanks for playing

Nice game, but a bit too difficult...

The halo spawning _above_ the head of the cat makes sense from a logical standpoint, but it makes positioning it correctly quite hard... Also, the cat sometimes seems to slip off the halo...

Graphics and music are awesome, love adorable cats. The halo is such a cool mechanic, although I was stumped from the 2nd screen, got the first halo down with the hint, but it did take forever to figure out how to get all the way across. Concept is awesome, maybe make a few easier interactions before hitting me with the huge gap. :)

Lots of variety for just a weekend in terms of mechanics and level design! I'm genuinely impressed with how far you got. I also thought there were some really creative levels that forced me to think but were very rewarding once completed.

I found a number of levels required really precise placements, but the controls were just a little too loose to do what I wanted to do. I'm sure practice is the answer, there. Some of my halos I placed next to the "no halo zones" were considered inside of it even though visually they appeared fully outside of the zones. One other piece of feedback is that some stages were all about using the halos in creative ways and some were just about strict platforming (no extra hearts to spare). I thought the strongest ones involved full use of the the unique halo mechanic, so I would double-down on designing stages around that.

Great work!

It's an interesting take on the 9 lives thing, but I'm sure many of us aren't keen on the cat losing its life. The cat is really cute, it would have been nice to see the other graphics fleshed out more. The movement is a bit stiff, and the cat does sometimes slide off the halos. Still it's a neat concept and if you were working solo, it's an impressive amount to get done.
