Currencies of Life by Bartman

[raw]
made by Bartman for LD 44 (JAM)

EDIT: The scoreboard doesn't work. This is because dreamlo doesn't work with the WebGL build. I don't know the exact reason but it had something to do that http links don't work.

*This is my first time I've entered a game jam and first time I "finished" a game. Feedback is appreciated  *

"Currencies of Life" is about the three main currencies in life: Money, TIme and Health.

The goal of the game is to make sure you don't lose any of the three currencies for as long as possible. The longer you survive the higher your score. Losing any currency is GAME OVER!

HOW TO PLAY

Walking with WASD You aim with your mouse and left-mousebutton to shoot

MONEY

You start with 100$, and when you kill an enemy you get 6$. But every time you shoot you spend 5$. So choose your shots wisely and don't just spam.

HEALTH

You start with 10 health, every time you get hit by an enemy your health will decrease by 1.

TIME

You start with 60 seconds, you have two ways to manipulate time.

Holding down L-Control will increase the timer by one second every two seconds. However this will also speed up enemies and their spawn time. Try to hold L-Control as much as possible to prevent the timer from running out.

If you're in a bad situation you can hold L-Shift to make all enemies move slower, while you move faster. But beware this will make your timer go down twice as fast.

POWERUPS

There are three different kinds of powerups which spawn every 20 seconds in a random spot.

Money - Will increase your money by 15

Health - Will increase your health by 1

Time - WIll increase your timer by 5 seconds

SCORE

There are a couple of ways you can increase your score.

Every seconds that passes your score will increase by 1, when you hold L-Control the score will increase faster.

For every enemy you kill your score will increase by 1.

For every powerup you pick up your score will increase by 15.

SCOREBOARD

There is a public scoreboard at the game over screen. If you want to enter your score, type in your name after you're game over and your score will be sent to the scoreboard.

The scoreboard only shows the top 10, so if you're not on there you should try again ;)

You have to post a ZIP of complete folder that Unity generates when builds. :)

Nice idea, like it! However the main menu looks way too polished while the main character looks a bit dull

I was unable to play the game, only the executable was included in the zip. Unity games usually have more in the folder after a build. These must be packaged with the game for it to function.

Are you by any chance thinking of re-uploading this? Description makes this game sound really interesting.

Hi all! Sorry for the fact that the windows link is not working, I've tried my best but couldn't make it work.

I have now added a webversion of my game to itch.io, so you will be able to play it in your browser instead.

Let me know if you find any problems!

That's a nice, entertaining little game. I like the idea of the currencies of life: health, money and time. However I think it would be great if those rules were more visible/obvious in the game graphic - it looked a bit generic.

This one was fun! I think your web high score list is broken, and there were some bugs where bullets would just disappear instead of hitting enemies. Other than that, it ran very smoothly, and had a good balance between being almost-overwhelming when enemies were sped up and still challenging when enemies were slow.

Cool! Looks good, music is great, gameplay is smooth but repetitive after a while. Good entry

Congrats on your first game! The biggest thing that comes to mind after playing is the UX for firing shots. They stop wherever you click, which means the game is encouraging you to click on the very edge of the game's window for maximum range and quickest target hits. This is a little frustrating on the web build, because it's easy to click off the window. I'd recommend having the shots continue past the click, or make closer shots cost less.

also I dig the music :)

I like this art style. Also the score-board is a nice addition.

Hi! I didn't find the need to move from the center point at all, if not for the occasional "powerup", and this makes the game a little boring after some time. The scoreboard at the end didn't work for me :( (my score was 152!). A nice game overall!

The concept seems cool but the controls don't actually work well in a browser as they overlap with some default controls in Chrome. Holding ctrl + movement keys will mess pretty much everything.

Overall a good game! Sadly in the web browser it's a little buggy

Nice little game, the concept works well. Highscore table is a great touch, sadly it is broken in the web version. Good work though!

I really like the idea of managing the 3 different stats to stay alive, along with the different ways to maintain them. Visibility of the stats could be improved though, maybe showing them on the player character somehow would keep them easily visible while you're focused on the combat. The l-ctrl key also caused issues as it's used for many shortcuts, so maybe a rework on the controls would be good (right mouse button maybe?).

Presentation is pretty good. Great effort for your first jam game. My high score was 251 but that "Fetching..." guy is just owning thescore board right now :)
