made by Manu & Wan for LD34 (JAM)
----[ THE GAME ]----

Squ is a cute but challenging platformer to hurt your fingers on. Come in and beat the high scores!

NB: In case you're wondering, the intro game is just a meaningless, tongue-in-cheek take at the themes :)

----[ TESTED BROWSERS ]----

* Chrome: OK
* Firefox: OK (but laggy)
* IE9+: OK (works best on Edge)

----[ THE TEAM ]----

- Manu (Lead programming, Game design)
- Wan (Graphics, Programming, Audio, Game design) @mkalamalami

----[ NOTES ]----

* All graphics & audio are homemade
* Various major bugfixes + the online version of the leaderboards were added after the deadline

My game stop working(twice) when I became a blue squirrel. I am using chrome. Also that intro is confusing.

@guru-guru: Thanks for pointing this out! There was an issue while uploading a bug fix. If you feel like giving it another try, you should be able to continue the game where you left it.

I don't get it, where this game is matching with the theme? Only when we make that plant grow? I don't know, but it was fun to play that game, nice idea with the flying squirrel, or that rolling blue one, graphics are cute, and animations too! And the audio is nice to hear, good job!

@OwT: Story time!

At first the game was about having two buttons: one for switching characters, and one to trigger the character's action. We eventually felt it didn't work and switched to what you played, losing the "Two Button Controls" theme in the process.

Also, the creatures you unlock were supposed to be bigger and bigger. This also eventually felt wrong given the skills we went for, so we eventually chose to mix things up a bit, losing the "Growing" theme in the process.

So now, in the main game, the only actual reference to a theme is in the opening cutscene... Fortunately there's the mini-game to save everything, right? ;)

This is a really cute game!
The graphics look nice and the audio is fitting.
Unfortunately I got stuck on a black screen after completing level 4-2 (Firefox 42.0, Win 7)
All in all great work!

@StMatn thank you!
You didn't loose any thing, the level 4-2 is the last one, but you should have seen the Victory sreen where you would have been able to submit your score.
I just test it whith (Firefox 43.0, Win 10) and it was working fine. Dunno what happend. I know we have the black screen if you choose continue when you already finished the game but I never seen it before the leaderboard.
Sorry for that.

Hey! just go onto the leaderboard. Really liked the game, all the different abilities made sense and I'd only just mastered one before another was introduced, so the difficulty ramped up nicely. I'm not sure if it was intentional but when you jump out of the water mode, you're still slow. It seems like you speed should go back to normal at that point no? good work!

@Studiosaurus It depends on the character. The water character is slow on the ground, but the other characters should be at normal speed yes. I didn't notice a such bug but I'll pay attention. Thanks for the leaderboard testing ;)

Pretty nice game (sorry though, for writing more about our game than yours, but I think you read your comments more than ours)

It was planned kinda different, there should have been a picture exlpaining the hud (the meaning of the timers, the meaning of the unit tree)

Yeah, we had a complete system and it really worked kinda well but some hours bevore deadline we recognized it was to easy to win and so we etablished a new system. The problem was, that the maps were now almost impossible to win (except the tutorial and small island)

This time we set our goal so high, that we had all of our team (except 1) make textures (they are all self made with gimp, with some help from online tutorials). We almost worked non stop, the programmer did a really amazing job (all from scratch except his self made library) coding all the features.

Anyway, thank you really much for your feedback. Comments like yours are exactly why we are here. Sadly we won麓t be able to fix the map problem the next days (since there is a RL problem I can麓t talk about) but I will add a explanation about the unit and building system soon.

Greetings,
Team Wir

ps.: Sorry for the language fails, it麓s pretty late ^^

I liked the visual style and the music. The powerups were really cool.

Good thing you mentioned that the intro didn't make sense, now I don't have to point it out ;-) I thought it was a growing game and the growing in the intro felt really good.

I had some fluctuating frame rates, always slowing down when it was getting interesting.

A couple times my controls stopped working, for example when I got metal squ and it said to press down arrow I did and nothing happened. Also, I played through most of the game waiting to see where this game fit into the theme, also being confused by the out of place tree growing scene at the start. I read your comments about the idea behind the game, but I think this is still a very, very hard sell to make this fit within either theme at all. It's a good looking and sounding game, though, even if it does not fit within the themes.

interesting game... would have been interesting if you could stay on theme tho... Anyway, gets pretty challenging one there is more than two forms, and it has pretty cute art

Great game idea with great graphics and audio. The game fits the theme well with the growing skillset and the minigame in the beginning adds to the humor of the game. I like that you introduce the additional skills slowly in the game, that makes it easier for the player to remember those. Overall a great entry!

I don't get the growing tree at the beginning since it has no use for the game.
But the game is great and the 4 different squirrels make the gameplay fun!
Great job!

This was one of the most polished games I've seen so far. I think it would have been better if you had more time to add some more animations, but other than that the game was great. I played the whole thing! The only thing I noticed that really needed fixing was that every once in a while there were two music loops playing at the same time. (Specifically in the last cutscene and main menu after finishing the game). Good job!
