What have you got there? by kirroyal

"What have you got there?" the father asked the child. "Nothing." replied the child, hiding the stick he picked up behind his back. Satisfied with the answer, the father beckons the child to follow. School is over and mummy is waiting at home with a freshly cooked meal. The father, as an adult, has long since forgotten that a stick in the hand of a child can be a powerful weapon capable of conquering even the most hideous of foes. The mundane walk home becomes an adventure in the fantasy of a child.

In "What have you got there?", you play as the child conquering foes with a stick on a walk home. Please make sure to protect your dad from the imaginary monsters!

Nice narrative idea for the game!

Amazing game! The art is 10/10. My only complaints are that the collision is a bit finiky, and that the "g" text looks kind of like a "6".

Have a great day!

P.S: Sorry about the extra comments! There seems to be a bug on the website that casued that.

This is a very charming game---the premise is cute and the graphics and audio are great. Mood is excellent. The controls seemed a little unresponsive, particularly when it came to jumping, but were otherwise good!

Great art! I think you should set your Ludum Dare entry page's cover picture, I thought this was a game without graphics the first time I saw it in Games section.

I liked the concept of the game - the real and imaginary worlds. The game could use more levels, but with such limited time, it's hard to do that. Music / graphics / sound effects were used well.

Really cool game, a couple bugs that happened were:
I can walk too far to the right and my player will be in the side of the screen with the dad walking but still be colliding with and interacting with things from the fantasy world that I cant see yet
the enemies never actually attacked me and took away my health, they just went towards the right until they reached my dad and then started attacking him.
really really great graphics tho, but it looks like you opted out of graphics ratings??

Game looked beautiful. Loved the concept -- wish there were more levels and such, but the premise was great!

I really liked that when you throw a grenade to the right it turns into a soda can. Interesting idea and take on the theme.

I loved the mood here, really nailed that category. I love the theme here and the way the music plays off of it. Would love to see some further progression with the enemies! Well done!

Neat concept and big points for mood. Could be onto something few games even come close to capturing.
Nice job.

@flying-cat-of-the-pepes thank you very much. Yeah, even though we spent a lot of time on original art,we used the pixel hero and the shade mob of Rvros and a tilemap of vnitti.

We reconed it was fair to opt-out in respect of people who did their art 100% themselves.

Cool and unique gameplay! Wasn't too challenging for me though, maybe add more monsters? There is a strange behaviour when you try to jump very close to a box the hero just rotates in place -- you have to get back a bit and jump again. I enjoyed playing the game!

This is so clever! It captures exactly how I felt as a kid playing with a stick. I would rate this higher than 5 if it let me.

I love the idea of a bored kid with nothing to do that turns a mundane walk into an epic quest. I think a prompt on screen that tells the button when you got the stick/sword (instead of just in the corner) would have been nice since it took me a sec to try and figure out the controls. Would really love to see this made into a full game with dad walking to work. Great work.

This is a very charming game, both art and music are very nice.
The concept is great, an interesting twist on "Start with Nothing".

Great job!

Great work! Love the art and the experience. As others mentioned, the collisions were a little strange, but they were not a problem.

Oh that was sooo good!! I love the idea of a mundane walk back home being made into an adventure ´w`

The death animation for the enemies is a little unclear, but that's my only nitpick, really.

I'm not big fan of pixelart nor of platformers/runners, but the idea of imaginary world inhabited with mobs and a stick as a sword is awesome! Really a cool decision! So much room for imagination: folowing grandpa to a hospital, walking elder sister to a coledge, taking mom to work - this might be a hit.
Although tilesets and music is no yours you managed to create cool fantasy mood and atmothphere!
Well done! And thanks for WebGL build!

Dude, I just finished whole game just by going right whole level. I believe this is a bug. Sad, because it looked promising. Anyway great ascetics!

@ryjcio thank you for the feedback. It is indeed a bug. The monsters are supposed to attack the father, who is a one hit kill. Unfortunately there is an error in the implementation of his death logic. Once you attack a monster, they start attacking you though.
