Hello Buddy! by D4rkWeasel

[raw]
made by D4rkWeasel for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

After the big bang, Alvin the atom feels alone and seeks company. Help him to find friends and evolve.

  • Collect friendly (green) atoms
  • Avoid hostile (red) atoms
  • Grow big and evolve, when you have collected enough atoms!

Did you notice that you get more points, if you collect more atoms before you evolve? ;)

The WebGl-Port was added after the initial 48 hours, so more people can test the game.

Update 10.10.2019: Fixed game breaking bug, where Alvin would leave the playfield around evolution 20

very cool, I was amazed when I rotated the character with green faces on it :D

My highscore is 1570. I like the general concept but in my opinion rotating is quite useles because it is too fast, i didnt use it. Music is funny but quite repetitive. The biggest issue is no any increase in difficulty as you play (apart from increasing the size of your atom, but it doesnt make game much harder even after 10 evolutions). Anyway the game looks like pretty good idea for a very fun game

@xcvzxc Thanks! Yeah, I was not sure, if the size change was enough of a difficulty increase. Maybe I should have also increased the speed over time.

This game just made me feel fine for some reason. There are some little problems others have pointed, but they are just minor annoyances. I loved the cool rotation mechanics.

I thought this concept was pretty unique. The rotation was a very cool idea! Good job

High score 5330 evolution 16. Great work! Really starting with nothing :) Excellent theming. I'd say you can ramp up the difficulty faster.

I scored 2322 with 20 evolution. Then I pressed rotate and then Alvin rotated and flew away from the screen. The game kept on going forever and Alvin was nowhere to be found. I guess he just got tired of existing. My only problem with this game is the rotation, it happens to fast and I ended up collecting more points by just standing still... this and the part where it threw Alvin out of the game. So yeah, slow the rotation or remove it completely and the game will be fine :D

Cute artstyle and interesting concept of gluing atoms at yourself.

I wonder why when I got bigger, the hitting circle for good atoms seems to be larger than myself and hitting circle for bad atoms is still as big as my myself.

@adamk33n3r @afestivedolphin @danny-wynne Thank you! :)

@hcursino That's interesting. I never played to evolution 20 :D To be honest I thought Alvin would have died by then, because he became too big to evade the red atoms. But it seems not to be the case :D Thanks for letting me know!

@keith-wang Thank you! Yeah, I noticed that myself, but I did not find the bug in time :/

The controls initially were a bit tough but i got used to it. It's an interesting concept, wish there had been additional mechanics to the game. Nonetheless well done for a 48hr game. Good job

Was a joy to play, almost as fun to see how many I could collect and not evolve.

Very nice and quite fun, although the controls are quite hard to master.

The controls are quite hard to the beginning but finally it is a really fun game and the concept is interesting ! Good job, guys !

Cool game, it didn't really seem like the difficulty changed at all, until evolving quite a few times. But I still had some fun playing, well done.

Nice! Collecting the atoms early on is a challenge. I like how they all stick around and wobble when you rotate, though it doesn't seem to matter so much when you only need five to evolve. I tried collecting as many atoms as possible, just for fun, but only managed 12 or so.

I didn't!! That's a really good twist. :D You should definitely mention it in the description.

Wow nice mechanics! Really cool that you need to rotate aroud to pick the atmos better, cool game! Just the controls feel a bit weird.

I actually had a lot of fun :D Seems simple at first, but then I was trying to reach the biggest size possible before evolution for those sweet point$$, and it becomes quite tactical! With the perfect "floaty" movement to make things a bit more dangerous. Extremely simple idea that works extremely well I think! (And kudos for the elastic movements of the blobs, great small polish ^^)
(Although to be honest I died because I had a bad case of brainfart where I suddenly smashed LEFT when I wanted to go right, and well... that was the end of my trip :D)

@lonewolfdev Thanks! Well, they behave as if Alvin had a mass. The more atoms he has attached, the more mass he has. Don't know if this is a good or a bad thing :D

@grhyll Thank you! Nice to see, you had so much fun with my game! :D And you have beaten my highscore with just 11 evolutions! Very nice! :D

Interesting game!
Graphics could be better, especially the UI
The idea is really cool, but it quickly gets boring
Anyways, great job with your game!

@noobexception Thanks! Yeah, my artistic skills are that of a 6 year old boy :P I also noticed that it gets boring after some time, but I didn't have enough time to add more game mechanics ;)

Really interesting idea. I think it could be expanded quite a bit - maybe different kinds of good/bad atoms, progressive leveling/scoring, looking to build specific molecules, ... loads of options based on what you came up with. Graphics and sound were enough to play the game. The only issues I've had was with the controls - the floatiness was hard to control and rotating not around my "main" atom felt confusing. But it might be just my preference that I'd like more snappier, possibly faster, version more.

Hey!

It is a fun entry!

I like the rotation idea. It looks really fresh and it makes me comes up with ideas in this direction.

A modest result of 2674 with 7 evolutions from me.

Great job!

Very original mechanics. I like the moving back and forth and rotating.

I wasn't sure how many times I was allowed to evolve and if new mechanics were introduced later, but I evolved a few times before stopping play.

The movement felt like I was a character with low inertia, like in outer space. Although it was thematic with the background I found it at times a bit frustrating to control.
