Hungry Hungry Spiders by bendmorris

[raw]
made by bendmorris for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

Multiplayer online game. Each spider begins with a single soul. Eat other spiders to acquire their souls, and eat spiders and flies to acquire blood. The more blood you drink the larger (and slower) you'll get.

Use WASD/LRUD to move. Controls are tank-style; you can turn left and right or move forward.

If you are bigger than another spider, as long as you're facing them you will drain their blood. If you are smaller than another spider, you need to get behind them first to drain their blood.

Surprisingly engrossing. The spider-spider combat is tricky -- once three spiders get into it, a sort of feeding frenzy can emerge. (Also, great domain name.)

Pretty neat! The hitbox on the mouth is a little strange feeling but the whole mood of it is great. Also, nice url.

Kind of gross, with blood, flies, and spiders everywhere. Impressive how well the multiplayer works, as well as the mechanics. It feels balanced because big spiders are slower than smaller ones, so it is easy to flee when you don't have much blood, and you can steal blood from bigger spiders that way too. Pretty fun game, well done!

hitboxes can be abit wonky but honestly the giant fights that break out where people change by the 10,000's is fun . maybe add a way to back up is the best suggestion i can give.

I also approve of the domain name. Great job on the multiplayer! The background is a bit bright for night-time viewing.

Cool game, reminds me of .io games. As others mentioned the colliders seem to be kinda weird which makes it hard to kill bigger spiders. Also the camera should probably be a bit more zoomed out when you are small, so you can be a more aware of bigger spiders around you.

oh this was pretty neat. The paper on the background and the game taking whole browser window is nice. It also had scrolling support, and proper collision detection with some blood on the paper. Sounds were basic, but working anyway.

Nice take on the theme and a very functional online game. Controlls and movement could use some work, but overall fun experience!

Really cool concept, would you make this into a mobile game later?

I didn't get a chance to play against other spiders so my game only consisted of walking around and gathering blood which wasn't very interesting :(. Maybe something could be done to make the solo play interesting?

Seems like it might be a fun game, but when the only other spider online is AFK...

Very fun idea for a game. Ran into a couple other players online and had a blast!

Neat game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 45 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/aEgrmplySyU

oh first time I played a ludum dare online game I think, this could be very addictive with more players, however I could not find more when I played

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Yes it's a multiplayer game, so no it's not very fun on your own - if there's no one online grab a friend :)

That was fun. Not quite sure how the spider combat works. I initially thought it was a whoever is bigger thing so got eaten by a tiny spider who I assumed was no threat. Before that it was quite exhilarating knowing there was a huge spider around and thinking all I could do was try to get bigger.
The game was quite different after that realisation. I totally didn't read the explanation above of course.
It also seemed to get a bit choppy and unresponsive at large sizes, though maybe it was just less noticable when moving faster.
Well done for making a multiplayer game. I would like to play it with more players.

Neat game, nice work making a multiplayer submission! Unfortunately there was only me and one other humongous spider, but I can see it being more fun with lots of people.

I love the idea of multiplayer, this could be very fun with a bunch of people. I little background sound would've been nice.

Great...this is **not** the game I needed to play right before bed...

There was nobody else online so what better to do than to open up 10 browser tabs and feed all of the souls to one spider? Yes yes yes...

Feels like writing a simple bot script for this would be a fun little side project.

@ddrkirbyisq this is a completely valid way to enjoy the game

If you log in and there are two other players online, it might be me in two tabs trying to bait you over to my giant spider.

Very cool game, and I love how you were able to incorporate multiplayer in such little time.
