Build up Speed by CantThinkOfName

[raw]
made by CantThinkOfName for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

A game where you have to build up speed to beat the other racer. You start with almost no speed and you can train your way up to an almost an infinite amount of speed. This is also my first ever game jam.

Good job for making a game without your typical engine

I like the concept. Was a little bored in the first 2 training sessions but that's life. This game teaches you much like game jams that you don't win the race without training & learning.

I think some little animated sprites running would be a great addition and help polish the game.

This is awesome. I have never laugh so hard when after like 50 trainings and adding speed winning the race to a single message that just says "You Won" I love this game. Thank you for making this game.

Simple game, a bit slow to start but after building enough speed, the race goal was met. It could do with more content of some kind, as there is no more goals after beating the race (the opponent doesn't get tougher, or there isn't other speed-related challenges). Good job.

@burnedkirby The opponent does get faster over time. The change isn't that noticeable until it wins again.

Simple and clear gameplay. I think the competitor should update themself slowly. I find them evoluted immediately and beat me again!Bug Report: after many time training&add speed, there is only on button button train left and you cannot continue the game anymore.

Congratz to finishing your first game jam :D It would be great if there is something the player could interact with during the training phase, at the moment it's just a waiting game :D

It is really brave to not use an engine for a jam. I think you are using Visual Studio's form designer (i am familiar with it, i was creating my first games in it also^^). Since game jams require to speed/grind working, not using an engine is really brave action. Respect on this one!

The addition of a "training mode" with no consequences is a great idea. Reminds me of the practice mode for mini-games in Mario Party. Nice job for a first game jam! My only suggestion would be to add images of cars instead of boxes. Next time!

The progression is simple although decently satisfying.

Maybe increasing speed after training multiple times, without increasing speed between each training, could result in a greater gain than if speed was increased after each training. This trade-off between time and return might've helped to increase depth.

Alike Justus, I encountered a bug where all buttons except for 'train' disappeared.

@corrade I've seen this bug. What's happening is the player is moving too fast that it doesn't detect a collision. I'm trying to fix it but I have no idea how to fix it. Thanks for reporting

@justuspan The bug happens because the player is moving too fast it doesn't detect a collision. Thanks for reporting this.

This game feels like it tells a story. Pretty simple but works, really had that sentiment of satisfaction for winning it :)

Interesting game! It was fun to train at top speed, but at some point if you have too much speed it dosent let you train correctly and you cant lose or win. But it was fun!

Hey @cantthinkofname I downloaded the files but when I run the `StartWithNothing.exe` I get nothing happening. I'm on Windows 10.

Good job on building this without the usual engines, only issue i had was that in the end i somehow bugged it and i could only click the train button, every other button disapeared. (i did not start the race)

I understand the concept but I will have seen it differently "find the speed of the opponent" and adding different forms, events etc .. for each race

It's simple but it works fine. Congratz on making a game in what looks like windows forms though, that's not easy to do!

Congrats on doing your first jam! This was my first too. It's impressive that you did it without an engine, as far as I can tell. The music is also nice :)

Congratulations on your first Ludum Dare entry and welcome to the community!
You've made an interesting engine selection. Windows forms make it feel like it is a good old windows 95 game.

At first I hated this, it was boring and dumb.

Then I played some more and really liked it.

Is there any advantage not adding speed after training?

The use of windows forms gives it such a charming feel and brought me back to when I had to help my mother who has now passed with a programming assignment she did for a community collage computing class, thank you so much for that.

This is such a charming game and you should be really proud of yourself.

It is very simple at first glance but tiny change afterwards makes huge difference. I like this game!

It's not very fun nor pretty, but it's a nice starting point in Ludum Dare compos.
