Homie The Homeless by KekkoDude

[raw]
made by KekkoDude for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

it's not feature complete and lacks some in-game help but the core gameplay is there!

update As a consequence of all your feedback, i spent the day polishing the graphics a bit making stuff a bit clearer and i’m going to continue work on this for a little while at least, i am curious to see where i’m going to take it. I also added a brand spanking new soundtrack, and a little secret if you can find it!

i'll keep woking on it for a while and see where it ends up

controlls

Left click: Move around

Arrow Keys: Beg

Press the stop button in the bus to get off and walk up to the carboards laying around or grab a snack if you can find one, they have a purpose. SC1.png sc3.png

Thanks for all the feedback

Tools used

Game Maker Studio 1.4

As the engine and code compiler

Audacity

To sample my guitar and rattle some coins that sadly didnt make it into the game... for some obscure reason...

Piskel

For all the "ART"

Edraw MindMaster

For mind mapping, this was both useful and diss-advantageous at the same time, spent A... LOT... of time planning, the theeme was way to broad for me haha had to practice holding back my ideas so that was good practice

If you enjoyed it, check out the latest build on itch.io

The files are there together with the LD entry just look for the latest build

Really love the idea man

Really bleak, in a good way! I liked the looping bass line, added a lot to the atmosphere.

Needs more for it to be entertaining but I can see something here. The graphics are nice and I can tell you know what you're doing. Just needs more development.

Almost didn't realize that there was a progression. Is real slow, but makes sense for what the game is conveying. Was an interesting experience. The mundane-ness was all encompassing

Nice job with this, I love the aesthetics, as Bocodillo pointed out gives the game a really bleak outlook and the single string instrument sounds fit perfectly.

Hey, thanks for the feedback everyone, appreciate it! @nachtwitch
Yeah the progression is a bit slow and tedious but yeah, haha, it's intentional @n0ught234 @william-derksen

learnt a new way to sample my guitar from this project with audacity, jus hooked up an electric guitar to my mic port with a jack converter and recorded, had to get some drivers but it wasnt to much of a hassle, loose cables and cheap equipment was the real challenge audio wise... but gotta make do right haha. @bocodillo

I was a beggar for 3 days... but then succumbed to the mundanity of it all...

Very very bleak, slow, and tedious, which seems to be kinda what you were going for. Definitely needs some more for the gameplay to be engaging.

I liked the characters wandering the streets, and the DDR 'begging' mechanic. Very interesting entry, good work!

Currently sitting in the library. Just did some work, and came across this. I don't even know why but I just stared at your characters walking on the street for a solid couple of minutes without playing much. Probably the music? Or the art? Regardless, this is epic. You definitely got me!

I don't quite understand the purpose of the game. The aesthetics and moodiness from the game are great though. I also had a small problem where if I pressed the S key, I kept walking down indefinitely until I pressed the S key again. This problem only occured while walking down. I like that you used your own guitar to make some music though.

I couldn't really work out what i was supposed to be doing in this, after getting off the bus i seemed to just be able to very slowly walk around, i guess i'm missing something!

@voxelv Great tapping bud! haha

@iantyf Love to hear it! made the soundtrack after i had been staring at the same setting for some odd hours contemplating some lost features haha, i had the gitar beside me and played some moody tunes and it seemed to fit well so i kept it!

@goldenevolution @maggardjosh it lacks a alot of features that i didnt manage to complete and ended up having to scrap in the end. so it feels really bare bones outside the Tapping part, *imo*. thinking of giving it some more love but i gotta take a breather after the weekend haha, tough hobby.

also the yeah haha, im aware of the S key bug, wasnt planning on having keyboard controlls and i totally forgot about it untill the end haha decided to keep it, fun that you found it tho haha!

@copito Try following the path aroud, walk ontop the carboxes and you might get through the day haha :D

I love the mellow story. I wish the texts were a bit larger. other than that great graphics and story, well done!

I like the aesthetic of it, the minigame is ok as well. My main problems are that the walking speed is too slow and the art is sometimes unclear. I don't know what the things I'm collecting are and how they affect the game. I got to day 5 before I failed the minigame. I think it's really clever how the game gets more difficult the worse you do.

Nice concept, interessting and unsual for this LD45. Don't really know what to do (except collecting stuff) but guess with few improve it'll be a good entry. Keep it up !

Very moody game, The visual effect of the crowds moving together is extremely hypnotic paired with the looping guitar. I begged too much and lost after three days, but I assume I can go back and extend that time with snacks? Might go back in and try to find some.

In any case, very cool entry!

Great take on theme, nice stylized graphics. Music is nice, the mood is very good. Playability can be improved, the arrows minigame can be replaced for an exploration game style.

Loved the mood, especially since not many games seem to have gone for something more somber. The vibe reminds me of Paper's Please.

That being said I didn't really get what was going on until the end, when the text clarified things. I didn't know what I was picking up around the city, or how I was entering the begging minigame. This minigame clearly took place through an eye, but I couldn't make out what the moving sprite in the center was. The arrows themselves seemed to be detached from the game world. I wasn't sure if missing arrows or hitting them early incurred any penalties, nor if anything was gained by hitting the arrows correctly.

I'm really glad I found this game. It's incredibly moody, in a wonderfully bleak way. Great work.

Interesting game, i've reach 3 days and the mini game begin little hard. It's good idea to tell story and put some interactivity with these kind of thing, the gameplay increase each day, with a new mechanics very nice.

I'm overhauling some of the graphics and thinking about doing some expanding on the music and sounds.

I have taken everything you guys have mentioned into consideration, so i'm looking to make it way more intuitive.

It was a fun game. Reminded me of guitar hero, I would have like t see the arrows in beat with the audio track and also would like to see other elements to the game which would make you want to play it more such as side missions to get power ups or just other little things. All in all though it was fun looking forward to seeing more

The mood is really good. BTW we did fix the "slow move" bug on our game if you want to test it again :)
And add a POSTJAM version ;)

@hadesfury glad you enjoyed it! Slow move bug? what are you reffering to haha? move speed with keyboard while skating?

If you have done some tweaks to the source i would love to check it out! hit me up on discord, i have set up a dedicated room for the game for anyone who's interested

I have uploaded a second build after the final LD build and im currently working on it, adding features and polishing some stuff all around. i set up a plan for what i wanted to do with the game yesterday so i have a goal i'm forking towards, even a **juicy story** fitting the gritty theme!

Good ideas, it still lacks a bit of polish and tutorials but it has a lot of potential!

The graphical style fits the theme super well and the music helps to settle it, however there is not much to do or to explore, but I am sure that has to do with the short amount of time you had to work on it. Either way, well done!

It has a feeling similar to a rpg maker game named "suits" which i like a lot ... the minimal color pallette and walking animation provide an intriguing mood

Nice game idea, it's totally start with nothing lol. But I can't get the meaning of walking around in the station,and it's better to have some visual difference between the homeless and other passengers. Overall it's an interesting game, well done!

@squeele @hare-software @elbidev
Glad you liked it! i'm working on it daily now to get it to where i wanted it, it's getting there!

@rayne
haha what spooked you?!?
I'm working on a smoother transition and some more mini games actually

@velvetlobster
Checked out suits, seems interesting, might actually give it a go some day haha
The mood is only going to get grittier, that's what i'm going for at least

@farlandwinter
Yeah i agree, i have lost myself in the crowd sometimes myself lately(but i have cheats....) you do have the ability to change your appearance, and move speed by hitting space, puts you on a skateboard, wich you CAN also find laying around to be picked up and used haha.

But yeah... i'm trying to figure out how i want him to be distinguished, on the other hand i'm curious what made you draw the conclusion that you are on a station, i am trying to present a town haha

Well that was weird ^^' Atmosphere is pretty well done, but I'm not sure if there's a message in there? Succumbed at day 4 :'(
