LD45 - Cards of Creation by Starblast

[raw]
made by Starblast for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Phew! My first entry for Ludum Dare :D As expected I both mismanaged time and scope for the project, but I learned a lot during this Jam.

You control the environment via cards, there are 9 different ones, the arguably most important one being LIFE which will kickstart a while lot of things. If a caveman sees a fire (preferably from lightning) he will construct a village, which will slowly progress towards modern times and ultimatelly launch satelites into orbit. The game doesn't have a lot to do but I had fun experimenting with different concepts, I may revisit this project once I acquire adequate experience for it.

Btw if the energy bar and autocasting on overcharge annoys you you can disable it with SPACE

EDIT: So everyone was annoyed by the autocasting and energy bar so they are off by default, you can re-enable it with SPACE for some chaos xd

Good game for your first try. The idea is good and it's nice to see everything growing.

It was a bit difficult to learn what I was meant to do right away, but I love the large amount of elements you added and I can tell a lot of coding wen't into it. Great job!

I see lots of us had the "God Simulator" in mind :D
Love it!

Once I turned off autocast the game made a little more sense. It seems like there isn't a ton of input required from the player to launch the satellite. I had fun watching the world generate though. Great idea that could bd pretty cool with some more work.

@trifectuh Indeed, due to real world constraints I started quite late with the project so it's everything but balanced. The initial idea was to make it a challenge where to put the events late game to minimize damage to society (and nature in general) but didn't really have time to implement it properly.

An interesting concept of having a life/world-sim be triggered with disasters.

I would have liked to have seen some more feedback - for instance, it wasn't immediately obvious to me I had to click a card, and then click on the map. When I moved my mouse across the screen after having selected a card there was no indication that clicking somewhere would have an effect (and I am sure I did click and simply didn't pick up on events happening), so I just assumed that wasn't how it worked.

After fiddling around for a while I figured it out though. I also turned off autocast.

@flaterectomy While autocast is on you need to have at least 1 bar full, yeah should have just put autocast off by default, was an interesting idea but ultimately poorly implemented

Would be cool for it to be more strategical so your choices really have an impact on the game. But rn it's really fun just to watch the stuff happen. Good job!

I really don't get what was going on but it was really interesting to see what would happen by clicking stuff. Fun little God simulator with cards. Well done!

Good idea! Felt more like a sandbox than a game though, not sure if that was intended or not.

I like the idea, had some fun playing this. I've managed even to launch a satellite! Some stats of population, technology level and so on would be also nice, in my opinion.

An ambitious concept of creating the world in God mode finally succeeded in terms of the initial idea. Nice.

Interesting little simulation. I was delighted when I first saw a building pop up.

Then I threw lots of disasters at it like a good evil deity.

fun idea,
with some polish this idea can become something big

Interesting take on the god game. However, it did seem that the randomness of the events when cast made it very difficult to plan and implement a civilization. I wasn't able to get to the point where I saw anything like people growing. I just got trees. The water squares seem to spawn randomly after playing a rain card when, realistically, it probably should have generated rivers of some sort.

It is an interesting idea worth further exploration, but feedback to the player on what will happen or needs to be done will be key to success.
