Bodyville by kr0s

[raw]
made by kr0s for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

In this game, you play as your immune system. You start with one macrophage (a creepy pink fella), and one lymphocyte (a blue star-like fella) that can't make any antibodies yet. You have to control the macrophages so they can eat the invaders (green creepy things), and move the lymphocytes so that they make antibodies near the invadors' paths.

The point of the game is to defend the cell structures from the invaders. If all cell structures are destroyed, the game is lost. There are waves of enemies; once you survive them all, you win the game. Each wave activates a spawn point in a different tunnel (a total of 4), so make sure to spread your macrophages and lymphocytes across the map.

Macrophages and lymphocytes can divide. Macrophages divide when they eat 10 invaders. Lymphocytes divide once, about a minute after creation. You can control every cell that has been divided.

When you start the game, the lymphocytes can't produce antibodies. You have two choices: either move the lymphocyte so that it gets hit by an invader, or use a macrophage to eat an invader, and then share the genetic information with a lymphocyte. You can also move the lymphocyte so that it shares the genes with another lymphocyte.

Antibodies slow down the invaders upon collision. When any cell gets hit by an invader, it loses health. Macrophages gain health when they eat an invader.

Controls: - Original version: Left click to select a unit, left click to set a target. Post-Jam version: Click on a macrophage or a lymphocyte, then right click on a target. CTRL+click to select multiple units.

  • Macrophages can go to a point on the floor, or they can chase invaders or lymphocytes.

  • Lymphocytes can go to a point on the floor.

  • Esc for main menu.

  • WASD or move mouse to screen edges to move camera.

  • QE or mouse wheel to move camera up/down.

That's pretty much it. I had plans for invaders to mutate, but I ran out of time.

Sometimes the invaders can get stuck in the cells. You can use the macrophages to eat them.

There are two versions available in the download: the original LD45 submission, and the one that introduces some changes to the game, as per this post: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/bodyville/a-big-update.

Really fun concept! I like how it was like a mix between RTS and tower defense kinda, but very unique.

My main problem was that it was just really difficult to understand what was going on. I also didn't realize that there was a second spawn point until it was too late!

But I would love to see this expanded upon and polished with more than just a weekend's time!

Cool game! This had a good rts perspective. I wish it moved slightly faster and had double the units, but what you put together was super solid. good work!

Excellent graphic design, nice music, but the gameplay is understandable only after a thoughtful study of the documentation. The theme of tower defense is not new, but the execution and environment of the project.

Ultimate pro gamer strat: guarding one cell structure while leaving the rest of the body to die. All that's left is one of my kidneys, but sweet victory is mine!
Very smart take on the theme, cell division goes pretty well with it. The game design is solid as well, it took me a few tries to get going, but after that it went pretty swimmingly. Well-crafted atmosphere with the particle effects flying around and the music. All in all a great package, well done!

Great idea and nice looking, but the gameplay is so-so. 4 directions of enemy attacks, but not enough camera speed. Camera moves in 4 horizontal directions instead of 8 (this is just infuriating). Selecting units is pain in the ass, selection drops each time your press to move. Enemy moves almost as fast as your defender cells. I can see potential, but execution level is not there yet. Cheers!

Thank you all for the feedback. It was very helpful. I'll make some improvements this weekend to address some issues, and I'm planning to add an in-game tutorial, since it's desperately needed.

I ran into this issue:

I played it on Windows!

Overall though, I love that you made an action-filled game that's also educational. :) There is never enough of these!

@ynneblack That's weird. I guess I'll have to investigate this issue to see what's causing it.
