cakewalk by ohsqueezy

made by ohsqueezy for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

cakewalk is a single button action game where you are a cake and you have to walk from one end of the line to the other without getting run over. There are nine levels of increasing difficulty and four types of enemy: slicing, revolving, burning and shooting. The line is treacherous but the atmosphere is pleasant. You can do it if you try your best. And when you do, your time is saved to the high scores list!

Oh my goodness! The "ouch" and "ow" sounds are so adorable! Cute game.

Windows build worked.

Clearly didn't care about the theme, but that's fine. Some of the levels are a bit much, the ⌘ in particular. It's possible to get stunlocked right at the beginning and it takes some time to be able to move.

Overall not really a fan, it's at the same time a bit too simplistic for a three day contest and too overdesigned/difficult on the level design side.

That was a very fun game! a 91mb download :P but worth it. I loved the voices for the deaths that made the failure not that bad and very cute. It did get a bit too hard.. could not get past level 5 :P. Over well done!

@ketura there's nothing in your feedback that isn't deliberately part of the game... it isn't for everyone even if everyone is welcome to play it

Very difficult, I couldn't finish it lol. I like the audio, but the graphics are a bit too abstract and thin, it's hard to discern some of the faster moving obstacles.

Really neat concept, a simple idea but with a lot of development
Good job :) (and the sounds are super cute!)

I really liked the tone and the music! It was pretty hard and I didn't finish, but for a such a minimalist look you were able to create a lot of character!

I wasn't able to finish it either but I enjoyed the concept. Not sure how it goes with theme (? I might be missing sth), but I really like that you made a single-button controls work. The music & "ouch!" were cute.

@alchemic I think the Xs were too thin, I was meaning to replace them anyway so I added enemy sprites to the post-jam build, thanks for commenting

@ynneblack the connection to the theme was that the line appeared as a single point out of nowhere and split into the start and end points (that's why they're so close together in each level) but I didn't get a chance to explain in the game, thanks for commenting

Holy crap this game is really hard! I really like the sound effects a lot! The level design is really fun too! When I first started playing I was like "too easy" but that quickly changed when I got to the third level aaaaaa. The music is also lovely!

Really cute came with a nice, elegant concept! My biggest issue was the clarity- the enemies were small and had little to no contrast with the background. My first few tries I had literally no idea why I was randomly dying because I didn't perceive there to be enemies at all- floating star enemies against a floating star background with similar colors was hard to read.
(This was on the post-jam version, of course)

The game was also too difficult for me even on the first level, which is a real shame, because it looks like you had additional ideas *lined* up. (heheh get it)

Nice work, nonetheless! I'd love to see this expanded on!

(also, thanks for doing Mac build- as well as the 64 bit- a lot of games have been refusing to run for me so I really appreciate it!)

Hey not bad! Simple and a catchy theme song, and had enough difficulty to provide new challenges each level. Not much else to say. Good job! :cake:

Straightforward, addictive, and fun, but eventually made me want to throw my laptop out the window. I love how it builds on the concept to bring new challenge to each level. Great job!

Nice entry! It's surprisingly addictive, while also frustrating.
I like the curves and the mechanics of the different enemies, and how the cake slides back when you are not pressing space, which was both useful and sometimes annoying.
I also enjoyed the music and the "ouch"-effects. Sometimes it was a bit of a waiting game to wait for a moment where the different enemies would all be positioned favorably. On the other hand, there was so much going on, so many enemies to avoid! To help the player determine the direction of the enemies, perhaps you could rotate the their sprites in the direction that they are going, and perhaps you could give them a trail of particles to visualize what kind of curve they followed.
I like the glow of the lines in the postjam version. I got stuck in the level that starts with a diagonal line going up to the left side of the screen. Oh, i just passed that level, finally! But I still gave up after that.

Overall, well done!
