There's only Dark and you're a Cube (TioDayaaC) by scsc

[raw]
made by scsc for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Our first jam attempt, mostly as an exercise in Unity :)

This is a simple MAZE game where you search for keys and look for the exit. Effective play time is around 5 minutes. Don't expect too much, as it's just a proof-of-concept of a design. Would you like to play more levels? Please give us a feedback how you would continue to build upon this, or if you have any other improvement idea! :)

The code is open-source on GitHub, feel free to fork it if you are interested, or check the changelog. We've strived for a minimalistic design, so there is not really any artwork. We are still deploying various cosmetic hotfixes and integrating your advices, so you can keep watching for changes! :) The level itself is not being changed.

A good idea! I love games that play with light and shadow. One thing I recommend, especially with puzzle games where locomotion is a big part of the main loop: be wary of physics-based controllers. They can be very unreliable. For example, in my first run I was pushed into the wall by a turret and stuck there. (the impact of the turrets was a nice touch, too!)

Nicly done. At first i thought it was kind of a bug that it immediately went super dark after starting the game. But after picking up the first battery i realy enjoyed the use of light and shadows.

Good job with the light and particles) nice game for a first jam try! It looks very attractive when the cube glows, so I was looking for a new batteries and came back to respawn point to make it glow again. Think you should add some background music or ambient sound to make your maze more atmospheric.

Nice use of lighting effects.
I gave up looking for batteries. Always lost it too quickly to be worth it. The maze is totally completable with just the small amount of light generated from just moving.

Cool concept and aesthetic! I would like to see you expand on the light mechanic so that you would need a certain amount of light to get past certain obstacles, maybe with some traps you can't see in the dark that would send you back to your last checkpoint.

Simple game, but it work really well and the lights makes the game looks good even if it's only cubes.
Good job! :)

The use of light and color were super-nice, and finding batteries so I could made my day lol. My one suggestion would be to clean up the spent bullet projectiles a little more aggressively after they hit the walls so they're not piling up and making movement harder.

I liked the way the cube moves and how the light in the scene is composed (and to discover the maze with light). The gameplay was somehow a bit confusing. I'm not sure I understood the purpose of the towers that fire something at you and the kind of "cube dogs" that follow you.

The lighting effects make it feel pretty unique from other maze games, so good job with that. I sort of wish that there were more batteries or the enemy shots didn't get rid of all of your light, since I ended up just spending most of the game totally in the dark.
Good work!

Great use of light and particles! The onlything odd are the camera zooms when entering/leaving a checkpoint. Did't really use the batteries aswell, cause you lost energy so fast, and instantliy after getting shoot.

The coolest thing was to play for the biggest cube). It was fun, thanks.

The battery and light mechanic needs a little tweaking, there really was no viable way to not take damage. So most of the game is played in the dark.

Good first attempt though.
