The Journey of Life by mortalfosca

[raw]
made by mortalfosca for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

From nothing to nothing, A short text-based game that meant to simulate life. I was so excited about the idea but could not execute smoothly... Initially imagined it to be 6 phases of life but only 4 made it. Choices made in each phase affect future phases. Anyways, this was my first game jam actually, so hope you like it!mainTitle.png

Would have liked to play the other 2 phases, these were fun 2 minutes.

"You lacked creativity a bit, but still A for effort" why... why must you portray my game jam experiences so accurately.

On a more serious note would have liked some feedback for button presses or even just some ambient noise. I know those can be the hardest things to get going in a game jam as they take so much time and if you don't have any experience making music or SFX it can seem daunting, but without them the game feels very empty.

Thanks for taking time to play!

I absolutely agree about the lack of audio/visuals and hope to make a complete game next time!

This was one of the few ideas I have :D. Glad someone tried it.

Yup, definitely. I had scrambled 3 pages of traits & actions & possible relations between them in paper but did not have time to really implement even half of it. I`d do it as Jam and properly wrap-up buut i'm working today so :(

Short and on point. Fine entry and cool for first jam.

A definite start, middle and end. It felt like it could be expanded with a little more UI stuff but otherwise definitely a playable game!

Congrats on finishing your first game jam! This type of game isn't super unique, but I gotta say it's a very charming take on it. I liked the numerous smileys, they lightened the mood. The humour was nice too. Good job!

Even though gameplay duration is under two minutes, it has a replayability. I felt like a different font could be better. I had fun, keep up the good work!

First off, I think Gaz probably accidentally spammed his post. Maybe due to internet issues. Happens on Reddit and such at least.

I thought the lighthearted dialogue was a good choice.

The arrangement of the text could be improved. The buttons and the main text are really far apart. The main text is then difficult to read as it's center-aligned and probably too large. Your eyes have to dart around the place. I think you could've arranged the buttons horizontally and had the main text above it on 1-2 lines.

Congrats on completing your first jam!

Thanks for all the comments! really appreciate the feedback. @corrade you are right, the layout is suboptimal, I really should have used an "advancable" multi-line dialogue style to represent the text. But I barely caught the submission time (only 12mins before the end of submission hour), better manage the time effectively next time...
@berkin Im glad you had fun! Idea was to have LOTS of replayability with emerging/disappearing choices like a tree of life branching, I'm still considering spending more time on this with time visuals as well tho.

Nice little game - lack of arts but i love these decisions choices. Keep up the work :)

Nice take on the theme. I don't like the implication that studying makes one lose friends though :)

@frank-gevaerts Thnak you for pointing that out, in its current state, I agree!
Allow me to explain the reasoning behind it:
Every turn meant to simulate a year and the option chosen would mean you focused on that act that year.
Initially, to lose friends you had to study %80 of the time in your YoungAdult years which I would argue is quite possible outcome ;D however because I had no time to balance the traits/stats accumulated, had to take a shortcut and show it when you chose study more than once in that period.

This was fun! I made text-based games for my last two game jams, and I definitely recommend checking out Squiffy, it's a great tool for making games like this. Always happy to see more text-based games in LD!

@kristinamay Glad you enjoyed, tho I must say my entry feels SOOO unfinished and generic compared to what you've pulled off!
