A few words about the creators: ANGRY NERDS/ Aka The studio

A team created by students from Gamesup, a French video game school, we wanted to challenge ourselves to create a game with a predefined theme in such a limited amount of time. The stress due to all of the different constraints and the proximity (9 persons gathered in the same room, for the happiness of ours dearest neighbors) gave us a taste of what a professional project can be, with moments of sadness that will make the playwrights cries, but we will get to it later.

Just like in every self-respecting game project, the Game artists payed the price of the general lack of communication (I’m just specifying that text was written by a GAs, me, I’m just saying out loud what every Game artist thinks. The GDs lost an enormous amount of time to make complexes level design in papers cut and glued in a false cardboard (witch were all cut from a cereals box, the respect his gone, so far away), reminding themselves that Visio existed, 1 day before the deadline.

Capture.PNG image0.jpg

The professionalism at his highest.

The programmer, named Hugo, but I prefer to refer at him has “the guy who save the Jam” cause of his scripting talent, found amusing to ask the GAs to create that much model sheets and modular backgrounds/decorative elements (long live to the retro 8-bit). I didn’t count the number of failures and restarts, but watching the faces of the GDs bashed by some difficulties relaxes me.

It was our first time making an 8-bit game and create animation props, a rough experience but enjoyable. Ours Artistic Headmistress (Éline) fell in depression many times, for obscures reasons. Some artists felt sick (or had to, like, sleep. Obviously overrated) and were forced to quit the ship before the deadline.

We’ll never forget them.

I’m the only survivor, surrounded by strangers, making unspeakable noises, searching for problems that doesn’t even exist, patting keyboards like robots for their monstrous god: Unity. It's actually during one of these moments of craziness that I took the time to wright those magnificent words just for you, who got through this (particularly longer than needed) text filled with ... nothingness, just a French humor touch.

Whatever if the game correctly launches, we would improve it. If the game can’t be played at his launch, we will take revenge and slaughter the GDs, because I don’t know what to do with this kind of situation... Whatever is the finalized result, the simple fact to see the beginning of a game which comes directly from our under slept brains, always gives us the same feeling : “I want to see more, when do we continue?”

May our game amused you, and yours be accomplished

This was easily one of the top 20 games I played made for this jam, absolutely amazing

This game has a nice mood. However, it was pretty repetitive and the player gets stuck on walls too easily.

Pretty fun, I liked the upgrades that you got, they kept the game feeling fairly fresh. My main problem with it is the lack of sliding collision -- getting stuck on walls interrupted the flow of the game. However, it was nice that the game didn't punish you too harshly for dying, which kept me playing longer than I might have otherwise.

The concept of echo as a navigational tool is cool. I liked a lot the game feel of the echo wave.

The art is very pretty, but unfortunately there are several mechanical flaws in the game. You stick to every wall you touch and the echo many times doesn't illuminate every tile, making it seem like there is a passage when it's just a wall.

A pretty fun game, I went through the whole thing, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Normally I don't like maze games that throw you in blind but this did it pretty well. Some of the tile drawing was a bit iffy, and I got stuck in some narrow passageways sometimes, but overall it was a fun game and there was a LOT of levels for a game jam product, so nice work!

@pedro-rosa, Thank you for your feedback ! One of our friends did the soundtracks for free, he wasn't in our team at the beginning. It was really kind from him to do it for us. He helped us a lot !

The positive was the overall feel, it was quite emersive, the feeling of darkness was very eminent. I didnt like the fact that i got stuck on walls quite often and what I think would have been cool if there were fewer reasons to not spam the LMB. Otherwise good work :)

Unusual game mechanics pleased) However, the gameplay is slightly monotonous. Probably not enough variety of enemies, but given the fact that the game had to be done in 3 days, good job!

Nice aesthetics.
And interesting gameplay mechanics. Slightly repetitive/monotonous, but I suppose it's meant to be kinda meditative experience :)

I like the art a lot, and the music and sound effects were cool. I found myself wishing I could see the cave and the monsters more frequently, because I really liked how they looked. In terms of gameplay, it was a little frustrating and repetitive, and I frequently hit random monsters in the dark, which is the point, but which was a little frustrating. I agree that getting stuck on the walls was too frequent - some smoother collision detection or motion would have helped. Cool mood, and the black screen to start really is nothing, so good job on the theme. Cute player art also.

Interesting game. I like this concept of making sound to see your surroundings. I have a problem with the length of the game though. You've created a lot of levels, which sounds great, but the levels are very much the same. There is nothing new to it. No new puzzles other than finding the exit. There is no increased difficulty or anything, except for when a new monster is introduced. So because of that the game got kind of boring. But overall I think the game is very pretty and the music helps a lot with setting the mood. Good job!

So I inevitably got stuck :grimacing: How do I restart?

Sort of repetitive overtime, but hey it's a finished game for Ludum Dare! Hope your team are able to learn from these struggles, if you find yourself in a jam another day!

Hey @itsdanidre thanks for your feedback ! We noticed that our colisions were pretty hard, so sometimes you get stuck for no reason, we're sorry for this.
There's no way to restart in game. You should quit then restart the game, unfortunatly.

We learnt a lot and we hope that we'll work together again. I'll try your game now !
