There are instructions on the controls in the game, you can see them on the floor when you start the game, and the mechanics should be very easy to get a hold of. But incase you're confused about something:

CONTROLS:

-Arrow keys to move.

-Mouse to aim. You don't have to click, weapons are automatic. Spacebar to pause.

MECHANICS HELP:

-Kill all enemies in a room to complete it. 3 blue slabs will come out of the ground with icons on them, each representing a weapon or perk you can choose. Step on them to see a description of what they offer. Left-Click while standing on a slab to equip its weapon or perk. You may only choose 1 for each room, the other 2 will be lost.

-Walk up to go to the next room.

That's the basics!

Note with download: If when you try to run the game, a window opens but then immediately disappears, try opening it in command prompt (Windows). This happens sometimes on my computer but I haven't heard of anyone else having problems with it in previous ludum dares I've done. So it shouldn't be a problem, but if it is, heres how you do it: Open command prompt, type in "cd " and the location of the RedVsGreen folder then type in "java -jar RedVsGreen.jar" and it should open.

I had a lot of fun playing this. The controls felt real nice, though I wish there was WASD implementation. I played for a solid 20 minutes and found a small bug, where it is possible to get trapped outside of the room. Great work, I had lots of fun.

@travis-carlen Thank you! Yah, I should've added WASD. And I actually remember getting that bug once but I guess I forgot about it. Thanks for playing it :) IDK if it's worth it to reupload just for that because I'm not sure if theres anything else I want to add tho. Also come back in a little bit whenever rating starts and give it a rating if you want

@flying-cat-of-the-pepes I will do that for sure!

My first few tries ended pretty quickly but then I had a really good run of 1710 points. Getting two shields early seems really useful, and then I mostly chose missiles after that. Back shots didn't seem useful since my back was almost always facing the wall anyway. The biggest negative for me was no WASD support but I just moved my keyboard to the left for this game.

@rob1221dev Nice, I think the highest I got was like 1200. Yah I noticed that backwards arrows aren't useful really at all, but the only other weapon that can be chosen backwards is the seeking missile, which is useful because it just turns around and hits the enemy anyway.

This was a lot of fun. Definitely A game I'd play if it was a normal release. All the controls were fluid and I figured out what to do immediately.

Doesn't want to start here. Res folder is in the same folder as the jar. My specs:
- Windows 10
- java version "12.0.2" 2019-07-16
- Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 12.0.2+10)

@griz Okay, I have a Windows 10 too and when I run it from command prompt instead of double clicking it to open it, it starts correctly. If that doesn't work, I'm not really sure, if more people have the same problem I might look into it

@flying-cat-of-the-pepes Thanks for the reply. I've tried debugging it in the console and this error appeared:

Please let me know if you fix it. Your game looks interesting and I would love to play it.

This is a lot of fun, and the silly sound effects make it even better. My only crit would be how often I don't even see what I am shooting at/being shot by. Still had a blast though, nice job.

This is really good! The visuals are nice and the sound effects are satisfying. There are a lot of details that I liked, such as how the screen zooms in on death, or how the arrows shake a little when hitting a wall. Main issue is that there could be stronger visual feedback for player actions; consider adding things like screenshake, screen freeze, and more particle effects. Would have also liked to have been able to use WASD rather than the arrow keys for movement. Great job!

Pretty good game. I got to room 35 with a high score of 2900. If you need to fix the bug that travis mentioned, note that in LD's rules you can update your regular version with bug fixes, as long as it does not contain new features.

Fun game, I like the art it is a little less red away from what I remember about the having the gameboy as a kid. Sadly I also ran into the aforementioned bug. Well, I managed to avoid it at first but was curious what would happen. Yeh, got stuck outside, but thats on me. Lost my monkey though :(

Anyhow: The sounds made me smile, the different arrows and power-ups where quite cool!

@walkingtall85 actually I don't think I've ever seen that bug, I got a bug one time where you can walk back into the previous room when the gate is closing after walking in and get stuck in the last room but I never go stuck outside. Glad you had fun though!

Good game, would have appreciated if you included the Linux lwjgl natives in the jar file (I had to recreate the jar myself in order to run the game) however. Sound effects are funny and gameplay is addicting. Good job.

@FinalForeach Oh no, I didn't realize there were different jar files for different systems, I've always used Windows so I never had a problem with it. Next time, I'll try to include them. Thanks for playing it :)

Gave me NES vibes. Found it pretty hard but had that gauntlet/smashTV style fun

I like it! It kinda begs for more balance tho (with monkey fighting force large enough, there isn't really anything in the way, that poses any threat). I liked the art, and sfx. Nice entry!

I had fun playing this game. The basic systems in it work pretty well. It could maybe use some extra player feedback (particles, sound effects, etc) but overall it works well.

How far you get seems to be mostly luck. My second run I got about 2000 because I got two shields early and then collected a lot of monkeys later on. Defense seems to be the only real way to make it anywhere in the game, as it's practically impossible to dodge most of the enemy shots.

I wonder if there would be a way to make the game a bit fairer in that respect. The player has very little that would let them dodge enemies. Maybe go the Enter the Gungeon route of having a moderate number of enemies per room but some with more complicated attacks?

I like the start screen with the unlocking upgrades as you get farther. In general I like how the upgrade system looks.

Very fun game, though the graphics are rather simple they look very solid. Also good job in creating this as a compo!

I love the visual style. The gameplay is a simplified archero, which is fine. I just have an issue with the fact that everything is too fast, and in a couple of levels i'm not even trying to dodge arrows, I just run and hope they don't hit me.

Monkeys for the win!

Fun game! Well done!

Sound was strange and not very helpful :)

Art was nice and controls were good! I think a very small amount of level randomization would make it interesting a lot longer. And also more enemy types but that's a much bigger feature :)

That was cool! Really enjoyed it. The mouth sounds, when they were obvious, were a little off-putting, and some fitting music would have been nice, but it was a really enjoyable little game. Nicely done!

@atomfox0213 oh no! that looks like a problem inside of the library I'm using, LWJGL, not anything that I wrote. You probably have an outdated version of something, but I really don't know so it's probably not worth trying to debug. Sorry
