Island Game by aleks

[raw]
made by aleks for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

This is my first ever published game and first ever game jam submission. I have not participated in any game jams before, let alone published a game.

In this game, you start in a randomly generated island as a randomly generated character with randomly generated 8x8 textures. I am not a pixel artist, but I found that auto-generating textures leads to a much better aesthetic compared to anything that I could ever achieve manually.

You can walk around with WASD, arrow keys or xbox controller. You can cut down trees, destroy rocks or build a bridge by pressing the action key (space or xbox A button). If you stay in water too long, you will die. There is no goal in this game. Due to lack of ideas and time, this game is very primitive and lacking in many features.

This game was made using Godot engine. It's a wonderful engine that I found recently. I decided that making a game with it for a game jam would be a great way to become more experienced in using this engine. However, please don't take this project as an example of how to make a 2D game. The way I did collisions, among other things, are completely not how you're supposed to do it.

When the next Ludum Dare rolls around, I will be sure to submit something that'll hopefully be more complete and I'll probably work in a team next time, since working alone proved to be a challenge in terms of coming up with ideas for the game.

Brilliant little game, good feel and atmosphere with the art style and audio. I have taken the tumble a few times (hilarious :joy: ), bit of a story would've made this game complete! Good job so far and good luck on your next one!

Sounds for somereason are very very loud on my end, although that might be my fault somehow :P Other then that the things that are there work really well! Not sure if the audio glitching sound when you restart is on purpose or not but it kinda fits! :D

The graphics look really nice, the 8 bit matches the simplicity of the overall game very well. The music is relaxing which seems to fit the mood of the game.

Wow, this is an awesome first game jam entry! The cutesy art style is simple, but nice to look at. I also loved the intuitive controls and the camera following was really satisfying for some reason :). My only critique would be the sounds are a little bit harsh on the ears, but other than that, I loved this. And i hope you continue in your game creation journey, you clearly have a lot of talent! Awesome job!

I liked the art style and the music. Controls were very responsive. Interactions worked nicely. Even if the game wasn't quite finished, the mechanics and art were quite impressive. Would've enjoyed to see this as a complete project.

Nice Prototype :-) for the next step a goal would be cool. Maybe you have to build a bridge/structure to get to the next island while the current island gets flooded?

I thought the death font and font animation didn't match 100% with the rest of the pixel-Stile and there was a spooky glitch sound when I died.

Ty for checking out our Jam entry and good luck with your future efforts!

It's silky smooth, controls and mechanics are intuitive, and I really liked the random texture idea as well!

I know challenging it is to show something you've made to so many other people, so I applaud you for this valiant first effort!

Not bad at all for a first timer! As simple as it is, it's not buggy at all, runs pretty smooth, and the procedurally generated content certainly is interesting! This is your first step to make greater things. Keep at it!

Very good for like @justinooncx put it, a first timer. My first game was way worse than this! I really liked the procedural generated characters and island. I wish there was a goal of some sort but I was out of ideas too and came up with a crazy one!

Great first entry! I love the art style and music. I wish there was a volume setting, it's very loud.

First entry and experimenting with a new engine? You have some guts ^^ I like what you did there. Reminded me of Minecraft. You should add some goals and this would actually make a neat little game. Good job!

Hey. Though this one is not finished yet, it feels like a good starting base for a top down survival game or something. I also made random generated top down adventure a game with resource gathering. But you have some nice simplex noise map generation with bigger features, islands, shores and stuff. I like that.

Are you going to continue on this game?
