Collector by MechWarrior99

[raw]
made by MechWarrior99 for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

screen2560x19202019-10-07_15-28-05.png In Collector you start with nothing and go around a small level and collect various plants that are sold for gems. As you collect plants, blobs will spawn in increasing numbers, and come after you. If they touch you, they will take one item that you have collected from your inventory.

Going through the purple portal will let you sell the plants you have collected, resetting the level, and give you an option to buy a few upgrades. Once you get enough gems you can buy an upgrade that will activate the larger Blue portal, allowing you to walk through and escape.... with nothing.

Controls WASD - Movement. Hold Shift - Sprint Space bar - Jump Hold E - Collect Item

Interesting concept! The carpet of blobs running after me was oddly terrifying. It feels nicely polished!

The environment was really nice, the enemies were annoying after as they got to be a lot of them following me around. Some music in the background could have made the mood better but really good job overall! I was able to easily get items from the shop as each time you go through the portal it resets the collectables. I was able to go collect, sell and repeat until I got everything. But overall great entry!

It was pretty fun trying to optimize my route to get the most possible points. I even avoided finishing for a few rounds because I thought I had found a better route than my previous best. I couldn't really find a way to get more than about 700 in a round though.

The game is really pretty and gameplay is okay. I would have liked a bit more to do, and perhaps a story. Overall an okay jam game.

The gameplay was pretty cool at first and the mechanics of the game was fun to play with. However after I found a route to keep to I was never encouraged to try a more dangerous path to get the exit portal. However I did finish it and I did love the eeriness of the monsters (they made me jump out of my seat!) this game deserves good ratings :).

Extremely impressive visuals and well-placed assets for the level design. The environment as a whole looked realistic and engaging to be apart of. For the gameplay, I felt like the blobs multiplied themselves a bit too fast. However, I did like the look of a mob of purple goo chasing me wherever I went. I would suggest then maybe adding a range to the blobs so that they only chase me within a certain radius. The UI could also use a bit of work as it seemed a bit lackluster compared to the amazing graphics of the game.

An interesting game and a great entry to this Ludum Dare.

@saltfactory-studio Thank you so much!
Yeah, they do spawn pretty quick. I think if I turned them down just a tiny bit, it would feel a lot better.
I was thinking of adding a chase radius, but didn't have time. The UI work was definitely rushed last minute, I would have liked to make it at least a bit better. But I guess that is how it goes sometimes.
Thanks again!

Really nice environment and controls. Just found it more worth it to collect little by little in the starting area until I had 2000 than to invest on upgrades and explore. Other than that, solid game!

Game looks really good! The creatures are kinda creepy when they make that noise, but I like the concept. The upgrade function is motivating to play and spawn the exit portal. Good job!

Why am I so scared of those blobs? D:

Great job overall. In my opinion the game can be improved with two things: adding an upgrade that makes you pick up the plants faster, and maybe some randomization for the resources positions. But the look and feel is good and I enjoyed playing it!

The graphics are very nice, and the game seems to run pretty well. It got a bit repetitive after a bit, but overall a nice game!

Congratulations on making game!

I enjoyed it quite a bit, running around and picking items while running away from blobs is great. They are so scary with their sounds.

It can get quite crowded with them once you run around picking enough items, actually to the point where you can't pick anything and the only option is to run around to the portal. While this keeps the pace of the game, it gets also extremely crowded (there could be even hundreds of them, without me picking up any items just wandering around the map!). On the other hand, one could easily grind through the game by just picking closest 2 plants for 45 and 85 points, up until 2000.

Thanks for making the game.

Keep up the good work.

(@zgragselus Thank you!
With regards to the crowding. That was the intention, to force you to go back to the portal. The main thing is that I didn't put an incentive to stay longer to collect more items, I think some small multiplier on how much you get per item would have been good the longer you stay. It gets to a max of 125 blobs. Yeah, that is something quite a few others have said as well. That you can just go back and forth really quick to get the 2000, would have been good to maybe disable the portal for a short period after using it or something.

Thanks for the feedback, and I am glad you liked it!

Aaaa, I thought this was going to be a peaceful game about collecting things and then the slimes appeared! At first I tried to collect a slime, but that didn't go so well.

Nice simple game, pleasant graphics, good polish. Gameplay is pretty simple, just run and collect stuff while avoiding slimes. Could use some upgrades like faster pick ups, or maybe a way to kill monsters.

I finished it! It was fun, really. I think randomization of plants would diversify the process and it would be worth removing them away from the store portal (otherwise you can be cunning and just run out not for long). And I would add some music to the background, ambient maybe. The rest is just great, I really like how the game looks and how nice the controls behave. The fully functional store menu is also a plus! Good entry!

Just beat your game. The slimes were oddly terrifying and it was really stressfull hearing them getting closer while you are still harvesting a plant. Because of the placement of the portal and the plants I was never motivated to really leave the viccinity of the portal and just harvested the 6/7 plants directly next to it, to win the game.

Nice game :)

During my first game I didn't really understand what the slimes were able to do. And btw, the slime a really creepy xD But it's really fun to play, well done :)

I like the minimalist approach and how everything worked together. It looks pretty clean and the slimes are very cute :)
