Joe The Crafter by Benjo Games

[raw]
made by Benjo Games for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Explore the world searching for materials to craft in order to build amazing weapons! Unfortunatly, we were not able to complete the game in time, but we plan to fix everything in the next few days!

UPDATE: -Player's speed increased; -Improved graphics in the crafting menù; -Added text to let you know what you're crafting; -Fixed enemy movement (until now, enemies really liked to get stucked on walls) -Trees now disappear when enemies are behind them; -Some enemies got balanced; -Fixed some items that had a few bugs

In the future we are going to add even more things to the game (like music and sound effects, the boss, more crafteble items and more), however these changes will happen on a different project that we'll upload to itch.io, since it would otherwise turn into a project too distant from what we originally uploaded for the Jam. We hope these fixes will provide you a better gaming experience! Cattura.PNG

The source code link included an exe that ran on my Windows machine fine. Movement speed felt pretty slow. I died to a turtle before I could figure out how to craft anything! The graphics are very cute.

I ran in silence, killed monsters, crafted weapons. What's next? Is there a purpose?
And what is the correspondence to the theme? Is your inventory initially empty?

Thats "ha" kills me XD
Graphics are cute, I guess.
enemies are diverse, the world is relatively large. You did a good job, but the game is boring to death.

I liked the enemy variety and the game looks nice and colourful. You move far too slow though, and I was never quite sure what I was crafting. All in all it's alright, some additional audio would certainly help but this game could totally be expanded upon, and is good as a starting point for that.

Yes, we know that the game is missing some important features, however this was what we were able to create in 3 days. Still, we are going to fix and add what's missing in the next few days (mainly stuff like sound, some bug fixes, a boss that we were not able to create in time and more craftable items), in order to turn it into a good little game. Thanks for the feedback

Also, the corrispondence to the theme is the fact that you start with no items and only your fists to fight, but then you can create many weapons starting from simple elements

I did like the crafting system. Overall the idea is quite nice. With a few adjustments, that you already mentioned, this can be a fun game!

the graphics are adorable. Die Fighting was a little to unresponsive. if you are going to adjust it a bit as you said , let me know, because the crafting mechanism itself was pretty cool ;)

Nice little game and great work! the pixel art is nice. Well the player does not move very fast but it's still playable. Beautiful little game and nice base for a little adventure game

I enjoyed it! I think that it has lot of potential. Also, the art is really cute! I feel like some of the controls are a bit unusual (the m and the intro). It's not a big issue since it's just two of them so it's easy to remember, but it feels weird to go from one side of the keyboard to the other. Overall, good job! :)

fun concept. The enter for pause was a little confusing tho. Didnt figure that out before dying first

Good start here. I understand that you didn't quite finish and that's ok so I'll just judge what was here. I played the updated version and even though you said you upped player speed I still felt it was very slow. I'd like to be able run around and collect more things faster if I run out of something.

The two element crafting idea has been done many times so I think if you use a system like this there's certain quality of life things you have to do. I would add a dictionary of elements and allow the player to single click them into the crafting slot instead of dragging. Also I would allow the player to click on craftable elements/resources and it would autofill the recipe. It saves time and frustration. The dictionary would also alleviate having to remember all the recipes. If something takes two or three steps to craft I found I couldn't always remember what those steps were.

Lastly I would add in some sort of map either in a corner of the screen or that you could bring up with a button press. Would allow players to easily track back to where they found certain elements if they need more.
Overall good start though. I know you want to take it farther so good luck with it!

I feel there's not much to do it the game altought I like how big the world is and that it's a bit differentiated, with different enemies who has different attack styles. Graphics are very cute. I like how the trees disappear when you're near them, little trick which makes it easier to see where you are

Cute but empty. The combat is calling out for some feedback when a monster is successfully damaged.

Very cool game, I would have created a sequel and laid out for mobile platforms. It is suitable for sticking out.

It's a nice little game, I liked the graphics. The combat felt a bit weird, and I wished there were some more sounds.
