J'Accuse! by bobotast

[raw]
made by bobotast for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

Your Tim Tams have been stolen, but you haven't a clue who dunnit! Everyone else can give you a clue, but a few disreputable individuals aren't telling the truth. When you think you know who it was, accuse them! And bask in sweet, sweet justice. J'accuse!

Made for Ludum Dare 45 -- theme: "start with nothing"

This is my first submission for Ludum Dare, and my first game made on Pico-8

Nice concept, it's a kind of remastered "guess who ?". Though, I find it pretty difficult, like I tried 5 times and I accused an innocent each time XD

It reminds the some game that i used to play but i don't quite remember that one. It was a detective themed game. Good job tho!

Fun art style, fun game idea. I like it, I had no clue how to solve it; so many people that could be lying. Great idea though!

@bjeaurn I'm glad you enjoyed it! Only about 1/4 of the people are lying, majority consensus has been correct for the games I've played.

Absolute fan of the moving legs and caracters graphisms! I had to try 6 or 7 times before accusing the bad guy! It's really fun! However what about the theme? :water_polo:

Interesting idea, definitely enjoyed the graphics. Had a hard time figuring out how you were supposed to deduce the guilty party though. Overall, good job!

@cooz lol, it's tangentially related to the theme. You start with no idea who took your Tim Tams. And with no Tim Tams! But I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

I do love the graphics style you had throughout, and it made me think a little as I tried to do a head count and remember exactly what "navy" meant in terms of color. Great Job!

to have trusted one's advice and then realized i was lied to is the most i have felt myself to have nothing while playing through these games.

Hard. A lot of people are liars. They are not innocent at all, it is also a lie!

interesting air style. took a few moments to figure out how to 'talk' to people to get the clues.

one problem I had was the 100% reliance on color (I have a red-green color deficiency - various color blindness-es account for 8% of men, 4.5% of people world wide), something to consider for a color matching game.

I love the crazy walk animations. Never managed to find the culprit though, guess my Tim Tams are gone forever.

Fun little game! I like the art style you chose. It would be cool if you got to ask people for hints rather than them giving the hints automatically. As in you could ask for shirt/pants/shoe color and have more player choice in the game. It may make it more interesting.

Not my Tim Tams!
This game is just ridiculous fun. Frantically running around the black square and listening to people randomly shouting what the perpetrator was wearing. A tooltip for the accuse button could have been nice, but the game is brilliant the way it is right now.

Very good, ingenious game. I like the art style and how fast you can play it. It's hard though.

The idea of this game is quite fun. It is not a logical problem but you need to investigate different people and find out the truth most people hold. This makes the game different from most similar games I have seen.

Oh man i'm a terrible detective. I can't figure out who's telling the truth and who's lying!

Love this little PICO-8 entry! Fun little concept, I actually had to get my notebook out to win the game :) Love the execution and simplicity, I think you can game the system by just checking if 2 people are giving the same (item/color) combo to know if it's the truth, but I may be wrong?

One of my favorite entries so far!

The walk animations are funny, really like them. I like the minimal visual presentation too. I caught two perps on the first try each. Maybe I'm destined to become a detective?

@karlipoppins I'm glad you enjoyed it! How it works is, there are 31 other people (besides yourself). Seven are liars, and one of those liars is the thief. Everyone else gives a random detail about the thief, but liars give a random detail about some other random person.

So if two or more people give the same detail, it's probably right. But there is a (small) possibility, that two or more liars will happen to give the same (incorrect) detail.

Nice game! It took me a while to work out that X was the accuse button, does it mention the controls anywhere? But after that managed to guess the correct person first try! I also really like the walking animation.

I like these sorts of deduction games  and i love the crazy spaghetti legs

It would have been awesome to have a little background music to add to the tension but otherwise this is a solid little game, nice work!

Neat little game. I found that some of the clues were contradictory, was this on purpose? All in all I enjoyed this pico :) great work!

Loved the idea! A bit like playing werewolf with your friends :)
I just walked around and tried to find common clues, then accused the first person who claimed the opposite xD

Edit: You even randomized it each time! *highfive

Yeah, got my tim tams on the first attempt :) Maybe i was just lucky.
Interesting take on the theme. The walk animation is nuts, i love it!
People with difficulties telling colors apart will have a problem, i would say.

On the one hand, this is short even by Ludum Dare standards. On the other hand, the fact it's randomised gives it a level of replayability that very few LD entries have. Gameplay-wise, it's simple, but tricky: you gotta try and chat to everyone, keep track of the most common colours they mention, and then try and find whoever matches that description. I love the stylised character designs, they have real personality to them.

And it's always good too see other people using PICO-8 for this!
