ModularArena by PepinoSMH

[raw]
made by PepinoSMH for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Hello and welcome to my first submit ever to a GameJam!

I couldn't finish it in time, but at least the core mechanic is working <3 The game is a top-down shooter, where you kill enemies and collect weapons parts to create a new one. You can create a weapon with:

2 Body Types: Shotgun and Assault Rifle. 3 Shooting Types: Bullets, Lasers and Particles. 3 Damaging Elements: Fire, Ice and Toxic.

As soon as you pick up a weapon part on the ground, it an icon will appear on the left corner to indicate what you've picked up.

You can mix anything into a 3-part modular weapon and start shooting. Also, enemies have colors which represents their elements, and the right one will do bonus damage. This is the chart "Fire > Ice > Toxic > Fire".

I hope you guys have at least some fun with it and next time i'll try to lower the stakes a little bit so i can finish it in time :v

Controls: WASD Movement Left Click to Shoot. "E" Create a Weapon.

Note: The second link is a "fixed" build, with some things that i didn't have time to add before the Jam ended, like a tutorial text, restart and quit functions, and some tweaks to make it more "playable." Please, use the first build to rate the game, not the fixed one. Thanks for the feedback <3

The mechanics are cool, but a pity we do not know what we pick up and suddenly it erases a desire object

There should be icons on the screen whenever you pick up an item. Maybe it's a resolution problem or the icons are not "iconish" enough, as they are screenshots of the 3D part model. Sorry about that :(

Interesting mechanic. Would be awesome with twin stick contoller support. Graphics are ok for a solo project.
The weaopn building is not instantly intuitive, I would love a short section where you can try out all the types in the beginning, but you probably did not have time for that.

First time I played, I apparently died just after collecting the first couple of items. I didn't realize I was dead, and couldn't move, and there was no "Try Again" option, so I had to close the game and reopen it to try again. The second round, I was able to move around and dodge enemies before dying, but couldn't figure out how to use the stuff I collected. I needed to go back and read a little to realize how to do this. Third attempt, I picked up stuff, used it, and started using a weapon (flame thrower). I killed a few enemies and died. Each time I died, I had to close the game and start it again. The graphics were kept simple, the movement felt like a little slow, and I didn't quite understand the head movement until I was ready to quit playing. I didn't hear any sound fx or music. Overall, for a 3 day game jam, not bad.

So that is a pretty good idea for a game. I like the way player can combine different effects to get weapon of his dreams.

On the side note, knife enemies gave few laughs. Cool game!

I personally love the game mechanic of combining different parts to create something entirely new. However, the actual gameplay could use a lot of work in terms of visual and audible feedback. With some more time put into this game, it could turn out to be a really fun shooter-up. Keep grinding my man.

I had fun playing this! I wish the pick-ups were more different looking from each other so you knew what type of item you were getting a bit clearer. I think you have a cool mechanic here!

Cool mechanics idea. I would have loved seeing what you could have done if you had more time!
