Entertain Your Damn Self by RedHermit

[raw]
made by RedHermit for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

A game about.. nothing really. Just enjoy it; make something from nothing. Using the orbs you place on screen you can do pixel like artwork, or play with simple physics and collisions.

Controls:

Primary Mouse Click (Left) - Place Orb

Secondary Mouse Click (Right) - Delete Orb

Mouse Scroll Wheel - Select Color of next Orb (lower right of screen will show color selected)

About development: I had very limited time this weekend for LD45 unfortunately, so I decided to keep the scope of the project extremely small. I included the feature of the game screen/resolution growing, which I wish I could have done more with, but it is what it is, and it definately causes issues with the WebGL build, so download recomended (sorry!).

As always, huge thanks to Pixel Prophecy for the inspiration to do game dev work and participate in my now 3rd LD!

Audio Tools: Audacity, Behringer U-Phoria UM2 DAC, Behringer C1 Condensor Mic, Ibanez 4-string Bass

Sound Effects: Mouth noises into a mic

Music: Recorded a 10min Bass session.

I really like the whole window resizing with the balls reacting to it, super creative!

Ha yeah the window size thing was confusing at first, but it makes sense now! :smile_cat:

I really liked this. It was well polished and had a very interesting game play hook. Loved the resizing game window. Great job with this! for the amount of time put into it, you should definitely be proud. Keep up the great work!

Is this a GAme? I don't know, but I liked the idea pretty much. The thing was totally clean, made some fun and was a nice experience.
Well Done

You don't see many digital toys made for jams, but I love it. Very fun!

The window resizing is so weird at first. After 3 resizings I finally realized it's intentional, and actually preatty neat. I liked the little POP sound effects. The bassline is a bit too quiet in my oppinion, and I feel like the window should resize a few more times before stopping the growth.

The resizing window really suprised me, very relaxing game. Well done!

@kleinzach Wonderful classification: "Digital Toy" - you're absolutely right. Thank you for playing and the feedback! :)

@tyfus Appreciate the feedback! I agree that a few more resizes would have been nice, but I stopped at 1000 high for anyone that had 1080p monitors. I wanted to code in detection for native resolution, and hit full screen/max as the final size, but it quickly became too complex for the scope/time I had. Thank you again for playing and the feedback!

@deathstorm You're right.. not quite the standard of a 'game'.. as there is no win condition, except those you create yourself.. I like the classification @kleinzach gave it; Digital Toy :)

@hedgy @khaotom @chambre19 Thank you for playing and the feedback! I'm glad the resizing window (and lack of instruction on what to-do.. as I really wanted it as a 'suprise' to the player) was well received and not a detrement to the experience.

@yngvarr @pedroso Glad you both found it "relaxing" - I was kind of going for that, and found some nice peace and relaxation myself in testing it out early on, and just went with that for the general mood. Thank you for downloading and playing!

I played this far longer than I probably should have discovering all the intricacies on my own. I believe you landed the theme right on. I looked at that tiny box and went, really? This oh no he didn't. There's no way he's going to start the game with this tiny box. And then so it was. I spent quite a bit too long just finding out that you could change the color and delete all the balls. I wondered if the screen would go back if all the balls were gone. But then i realized that once it was stretched it never went back. :D loved the color changing red balls. I deleted all the black ones to put in the color changing red to black ones. The guitar riff was great! (i believe i heard the underground mario theme in there somewhere ;-) )

Thanks for all the feedback @commanderstitch ! Glad you spent a fair amount of time in it, finding enjoyment.. and entertaining yourself! Glad you discovered the hidden music easter egg of the Mario underground level at the end of the 10min music track before it repeated back to the start of the song - I wasn't sure if anyone would stick around long enough to ever hear it :D

Nice game! I spent a lot of time discovering the world and different items. What was that tiny box xD. I really liked the color changing red balls!

Neat little toy. I'd appreciate it if there was a way to change the color using the keyboard buttons; it's way over-sensitive to my trackpad scrolling.

I really enjoyed this playful experience. Thank you for entering LD with the limited time you had and hope you enjoyed making it :)

As others have said, it's more of a "digital toy" than a game, but it's still a fun little time-waster. I *love* the mechanic where the window gets bigger as you fill it up with balls, that's absolute genius. Sometimes we need relaxing entries like these just to take a breather between all the fast-paced action games, mind-bending puzzles, and atmospheric narratives, so this was a welcome distraction. Nice job, especially since you were so strapped for time!

@shaurya-juneja Thank you for giving it a try and your feedback - I too liked how those color changing balls turned out, it was last minute that I added them, otherwise I would have added more! :)

@mao Great point, that I completely overlooked! I will remember in future projects to include multiple control methods to account for people with different set ups. Thank you for playing and the tip!

@f1krazy Thank you for the thoughtful response! I too wanted to make the most of my development time with the tiny scope, in a fun way.. that wasn't stressful, which I accomplished - I had a great time putting this together, and glad it's a good peaceful breather to some in between trying the great LD entries!

It is exactly what you said! But when the viewport started expanding on it's own it did blow my mind, that was very innovative. I like the creativity possible here and who doesn't like a good physics sandbox? Watching the orbs dance as you pluck them away and add new ones is very satisfying.

Interesting concept. I think that it fits really well with the theme, but as has been said already doesn’t do much in the game department. I really liked the screen resizing as more and more orbs were placed. The placement sound was quite good, but I could barely hear the background track. I think that this was a cool little physics demo for circles. Well done for not having much time for the jam!

As I've said on the stream, I like the idea of blending an art tool with physics. The automatically resizing windows was a novel touch, I didn't expect it. Considering the amount of time you had to work on it, you still managed to finish it and it's very relaxing to toy around with, trying to make a little artwork :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSZQiTfcXF8

It's an interesting visual experiment. Despite there not being much to do, it was still entertaining. Though more so when the screen was still scaling. Would be nice to see this with more colors and effects(especially liked the red that fades in and out). But adding more colors would probably require a better color selection system, which works fine at the moment. Audio was simple, but pleasant. The game also initially did the 'not responding' thing for me, but worked upon second boot.

Definitely a unique idea for LD. Kind of a breath of fresh air to see something different like this.
