Top Dog by Seth Marx

[raw]
made by Seth Marx for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Welcome!

This is our first Ludum Dare submission, Made by Adrian Lopez-Rivera, Manny Lopez-Rivera, Brandon Priester, and myself.

Details:

A goofy platformer where you play as a sentient hot dog who was genetically engineered by a rather incompetent food scientist to become the best hot dog you can be via collecting ingredients, giving you power-ups like interesting movement options. Due to obvious time constraints, we had to scrap the dialogue features and some of the narrative setpieces that communicate this. The process was definitely grueling, but a wonderful experience, nonetheless.

Here is a list of all the controls used, but we'll leave it to you to find it out what they do. Take note that you must unlock movement options via powerups sprinkled around the level.

Controls: WASD, Space

*It's pretty bare, but we hope you enjoy what's there as much as we enjoyed making it! We'll definitely be making some updates as time goes on, so stay tuned!

Here are some concepts and assets, used and unused, accredited to our art director, Adrian Lopez-Rivera (@riverathebean):

Super cute game! The pixel art was adorable, the sounds were great- and I loved the music! I was also really impressed by the paralax scrolling effect on the background. It's a wonderful little effect that makes your game feel so much more polished.

Good job to everyone involved! :D

Top dogs indeed! Now I am hungry. Great character design and artwork. I enjoyed the music and left it playing while I did some other tasks. Lots of nice little touches here. Your team has made something cool here! Well done.

As you say, the game is bare, but it's beautiful and feels great. The art is beautiful and I'd play a whole game build like that. The music fits very well with the style. Buggy, but a joy to behold.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I am Adrian, the art director for the project and I can say it was a great time making this game with my friends. Even though it is bare we plan on adding more things to it soon, so stay on the lookout if you liked this.

@mattdotam Manny, our audio man, was really touched! And Adrian has a lot of good work out there, so we're really thankful for his time and talent, even if it is just for three days. Thanks so much!

@james-beninger Ah yes, we did get a little too ambitious, but it was a pleasure to come together with such talented folks. Thanks for your time and words! They mean a lot! :)

Very fun hot dog game. Is it possible to get past that big cliff? The music and pixel art were delightful, although the sound effects got a bit loud sometimes.

The controls were a bit rough, but I enjoyed the mechanic of getting new movement options! Little worm hot dog was great.

The concept is really is really nice and the graphics and sounds collaborate to create an almost cartoonish atmosphere, which is really interesting.

However, i had a hard time with the controls. I found them a bit unresponsive, making the jumps really hard to perform.

With this in mind, its quite understandable that the problem is due to the jam timeframe. Managing to develop in a team as well participating for the first time is also quite complex.

Congrats on the team work and finishing a game in time for the jam!
