Armada by diptoman

[raw]
made by diptoman for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Armada is dodge-em up/shooter where you start with nothing but a lone mothership planning to invade planets, and you have to grow your armada on the way by taking more ships in.

ArmadaGIFCompressed.gif

Controls and How To Play

  • Arrow keys to move.
  • X/Space to shoot (if there is a fireship attached).

  • To connect to another ship, be in their visible radius for specified amount of time (explained better in-game). While connecting - if you collide with the ship, or move too far away from the specified radius, the connection will break and the connecting ship will be destroyed.

  • Avoid asteroids (or shoot them down). Note that if your mothership dies, the whole armada falls apart.

  • Every planet serves as a checkpoint. You need an armada with at least X amount of ships to invade a planet when you reach that checkpoint (X is shown in HUD).

  • You gain score for distance travelled + having more ships in your fleet than X.

Made by Diptoman Mukherjee (Programming, design), Pranjal Bisht (Art, design) and Joel Montpetit (Audio) for LD45.

I like the techno beat. I think I might have a bug: Somethimes when I in communication with another ship, the circle stops with the message "To far"?

@majadroid Hey - that's not a bug. If you move out of the circular zone while connecting, the connection is lost and the other ship explodes (hence the message "Too far"). You can see that happening in the gif too. :)

Pretty cool game.I like that it's more than a simple shooter. You have to strategize ship placement as well. Nice job.

Wow, very great game with good mechanics and amazing music. Death was frustrating so I just kept playing while trying to imrove my strategy of adding new ships in the best possible spot.

Good job!

At the start I thought that it's a usual scrollshooter, but when I started playing it turned out to be a very neat unconventional scroll shooter whith great core idea, art and sound.

Very well polished game all around - music, graphics, and gameplay! I liked that I really had to think about where to attach the ships and that I had to balance between good placement and easy placement. My top score was 8000 :rocket:

This is a really cool and super polished idea. This is something I could see myself sinking a lot of time into. If I had to complain about something, it would be that the connection radius feels a little tight, and it's a little frustrating having to connect to ships at the bottom (or top) of the screen, only for a random asteroid to appear from offscreen and immediately destroy the ship+break the connection.

As @frenchie said, very well polished game. The art was great, the audio was great, the mechanics were well balanced, and there was a good difficulty curve. I really liked the different types of ships and how you can risk putting them closer together for easier mobility. Very good entry!

Thanks guys! :)

@nullmoon I've never particularly experienced lag in the game, so I can't comment on that unfortunately. :(

Super polished graphics and sound effects. It made getting a new ship feel good, but damn that is one frustrating game!

Very nice game! Totally enjoyable, and sometimes a bit enraging, when you dodge the last moment and loose a new ship for being too far. Played it for quite some time :)

Oh, I finally found the whole Zombies Indie House squad again. I've been wondering how you were doing. ^^

The gameplay concept is strong here, with naturally increasing difficulty by higher and higher armada requirements, which in turn result in larger area of collision - and you don't even need to alter the rocks or ships spawn rate to keep the challenge growing (literally). There might be this "wall" effect, where players can reliably keep going through the few initial levels then they are constantly stopped at a certain mark and no amount of experience lets them progress further, but I guess that's how things are sometimes.

The game is also highly polished, not only in terms of audiovisual quality, but also the gameplay feedback - by reading the messages and seeing the things happening I could intuitively figure out the specific mechanics of the game (don't collide with the ships, don't leave a stray ship once you engage it etc.).

Overall, a high quality entry with cool gameplay concept. Well done.

(for the record, I scored ~2500 points until my invasion was foiled at the 15-scale planet)

@alphish That you Alice? Heh, yeah been a while since I've posted in GMC. There is a "wall" here, but that kind of depends on luck and some strategy too - like if you manage to build a bunch of shooty ships in front vertically, that wall comes a lot later.

Thanks for playing! :D
