Sail for Nothing

This is a game made for Ludum Dare 45 -- "Start with Nothing".

Controls

  • WSAD: move

  • Shift: use sail if you have it

  • Q, E, Space: Select and play a song (not really fully implemented)

Cheats

  • F12: Restart the day

  • F11: Reset the game and progress

  • F10: Time warp to just before the festival starts

Description

I attempted to remake an old LD game that I made called "Sail" -- with a changed focus on time rather than treasure exploration. The main idea was to steal the time cycle idea from Zelda: Majora's Mask, with a doomsday event forcing the player to "start with nothing" again every day. I thought it was a cool idea, but I think I was too ambitious with the variety of quests and mechanics, so I didn't end up finishing.

You can load this up and explore though, many of the quests should be doable. The ones involving music do not work well, and the festival at the end is unimplemented.

Great game. The personality and aesthetic were very well done, and the game did a great job making me want to explore the world. The time limit seems like an odd choice to me, though.

Liked the world. Looked very nice, especially the water. Ambiance had a nice mood

Thanks! And yeah, I intended to flesh out the time mechanic along with the NPCs acting differently throughout the time cycle as a higher-level mechanic, but I really underestimated how much time the basic quests would take me to do. I also didn't cut out enough of the ideas early on. There's always next time I guess.

Really cool concept. I liked all the quests. I don't know if a super small version of Majoras Mask works without some items being saved between days so you don't have to redo quests. Still, great job!

@erebus I would say that a super small version of MM most definitely does not work without anything being persisted, ha. The idea was that the songs you learn in this game would carry over between cycles, but unfortunately my implementation turned out super buggy and playing the songs doesn't actually work on a mechanical level in most cases. The idea of the festival at the end was to explode the world unless you play a couple songs to save it, ending the time loop (basically, just like MM). Thanks for the feedback!
