JUST A GHOST LOOKING FOR ITS BODY by smileyface

[raw]
made by smileyface for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

This is just a short casual game about a ghost looking for its body in the afterlife.

screenshot.png

You play as the ghost and must make your way through the afterlife with nothing i.e. no body. You will have to make use of the flashing lights of the afterlife and your surroundings to make out where you are and where you are going. You must do this before time runs out or never achieve spiritual contentment.

Awesome idea ! I just find strange the limited time combined with the slow flash light to see our location. Moving all the objects in the room is great !!!

Great game! Fits the theme perfectly with a really intresting concent and great execution. My one criticism would be that the controls felt a bit awkward with the rotation of the view but aside from that spot on!

Nice game! The style is cute and I really enjoyed the concept. Using the players shadow to show their location was a cool mechanic and being able to push around the objects really added to it, I felt like I was playing as an actual ghost. However I found the time spent waiting for the lights to come back so that I was able to see where I was again slowed down the pace of the game a bit too much, especially when there is a timer counting down. Perhaps if there were more objects spaced around to help visualize your movement when the lights are gone it might help.

I loved it! Had a great length and the levels were challenging enough to always be on edge. The controls were a bit unusual, but after a while I really had a grasp on how to navigate that invisible character through the level.
The minimalstic style fit well and the last room was a fitting end. :)

Really good game! Really cool concept, but I fount the time to be a restriction. Also, there is an easy UI fix; on your canvas object, change the canvas scaler to scale with screen size.

Love the style and idea of the game. Audio was a bit off. Knocking down objects was a nice touch :P

The concept is pretty simple but work well ! I appreciated it ! Also the graphic style match well with the theme. Moreover the time is a good option too force the player to go in danger position but I didn't really appreciate the music. Overall it's a good one !

This was a really fun little game. I don't usually like games where you are going in blind, but it works quite well here, and the little ghost cutout is really cute. I am not a huge fan of games that use isometric + WASD since it can be a bit confusing to move around, but the art style was great. Nice work!

Nice concept, I loved seeing objects being pushed away from the ghost's path. Maybe the last levels need more furnitures, it felt a bit empty sometimes. Great game idea :)

You got my attention with the 3d graphic on your post! Nice!

👉 Things I liked about your submission:
- Perfect theme match
- Great artstyle (low poly-ish minimalistic)

👉 Things that could be improved:
- Controls felt a bit cluncky / unusual - but I always feel like that with isometric games
- Lights slowed down the pace of the game

Make sure to go rate my submission as well!

Graphics were great, but the controls didn't feel responsive which made some of the levels pretty painfully tough. The light mechanic certainly made it harder but also really interrupted the flow of the game in my opinion. Pretty cool concept though!

Fun concept!

I think I agree with with what other people have said, the controls feel a little clunky and made it a bit awkward. I think I'd tweak the timing in general, the evil spirit ghosts felt a bit too fast whereas it might feel more fair if they were slower, but there was more of them

From a game-design perspective, having one time that you need to beat didn't feel fun to me; losing because you ran out of time and having to restart the whole game wasn't fun. Maybe a timer per level instead?

Congrats on making a fairly finished game in the jam though!

Room with angry ghosts and bleepping light was too hard for me, because I had some troubles with performance of the game. But game is really unusual!

Hey, very creative walking on walls mechanic, love the way i can drop and push objects like a poltergeist. I wasn't get it the controls right, it was a bit hard controlling the ghost especially on the second and third screen. Congrats from the game! :D

that was a fun game, great graphics and simple to understand mechanics/premise. the slightly tilted direction controls added a layer of difficulty, and dodging the enemies was fun! i wish i got to see the body though- that way i would not feel like i started with nothing and ended without the body. overall, really fun!

Clever! I made it to level 4 but had to give up at that point - the combination of the intermittent light and there being no safe place to stop after making it past one of the enemies was a bit too hard. Still, it's a great concept and well executed (and the ghost shadow is adorable). Nice work.

I really liked the concept but not much of the execution. The controls are a bit weird but you can get used to it. However, the flashlight's time window, the amount of enemies and the limited time to do it all make the game not very enjoyable to play.

Home sweet home! ;D

An original idea that goes well with the theme. It was a nice feeling to get the shadow pass the evil spirits.

Good job!

Thank you for doing a mac build!
Unfortunately, I think something may have gone wrong? I don't see the ghost shadow (or any other shadow) like in the screenshot? So I guess there were lighting issues?
I can't really review it fairly if that's the case- it was near impossible to play. I couldn't even get a feel for what movements I was making when I hit the WASD keys, and had to give up on the level with 3 evil spirits. (or rather, time ran out, which I think may have been a bit too brutal)

i loved how the light makes the game harder, was a little confused about the wasd movement but after my first death i got it.
great game with a awesome ideia!!!

hmm. that's pretty cool. a protagonist you can never quite see clearly. Not sure about the time limit, that seemed a bit unnecessary, but generally I think this is a really interesting entry. knocking over chairs to try and figure out where you're going.

Clever idea, well made. Very nice entry. Could be nice to add different lights and enemies to get a deeper gameplay. GG guys !

@selkkie im so sorry about that. Unfortunately we had no way of testing our mac build so we had no idea that was an issue. We should have clarified that the mac build was untested. Im so sorry and I think you should rate the experience you had with the game regardless if it worked or not. So rate as low as you want it would be fair.

I like the idea very much, but i hated the time limit and the hitboxes of the ghost. The Arrow Keys in an isometric perspective werent the best for controlability either. However I think this could get refined into a pretty neat and unique puzzle game!

Well done! The torchlight mechanic is nice, also controls are not super intuitive given the perspective and this adds more challange, really well done.

I love the idea of invisible body & navigating just the shadow! It all fits the theme very well. I struggled with directions (I think it'd work better if the arrows stayed), but I liked the flashing/occassionally flashing light effect a lot. As for the main menu, the left items feel pushed to the side; if you gave them some space, it'd look a lot more intentional, I think!

At first, management is very strange, but then I understand it. Cool concept that the ghost is not separable from the wall. I like. But unfortunately, if you create a full-fledged game from this, it will not be interesting to play it for a long time.

It's a fun game. Really nice take on the theme. I think you could add more levels and challenges like scare people, carry objects to solve puzzles or just don't break anything. But overall it's a good entry. Good job!
