The idea of trading up starting with the paperclip is also a pretty good fit for the theme. Even though I kind of liked the minimalist way you went with character dialogue, I think it would make the gameplay more interesting if there were more options for how you could talk with the other characters. Some dialogue could add some more thought to the trading rather than just walking around looking for the person who wants your item.
